The USNS Comfort (Kelsea)
It has been seven minutes since you talked to James about your plan. You are doing some prep work in the lab while you wait. You start impatiently tapping your pen. You hope it doesn't annoy Owen.
"I wonder what the captain will have to say about reverse-engineering the potential cure into a vaccine," Owen remarks. You have not thought about it yet because you have been focusing on a cure.
"Ask the captain," you confirm. As soon as you say that James enters the lab. You hope he has some good news for you. Owen intercepts him before you can say anything.
"Captain I was thinking we could reverse engineer the cure to create a vaccine," Owen remarks.
"Can it wait till I have finished talking to Kelsea," You can tell he feels bad for interrupting one of his men.
"So James is it good news?" you ask. You hope he doesn't see your concern
"Yes. Captain Harper said she will ask around," James confirms. Your face lights up with happiness because your hard work may pay off.
"And Owen,"
"Yes, Captain?" He is a little confused. At least he won't get into trouble.
"You can try and make a vaccine from the cure if it works," James confirms. You smile because it means there may be an end to the pandemic.
"Thank you, sir, we will get to work," Owen responds. You can tell he wants to celebrate. James leaves. You giggle at Owen's enthusiasm. You get back to work.
"Owen if you want to celebrate make sure these reach Lilly," You remark as you hold a tube of pills out to Owen.
"Ok I'll be back," he gets up and snatches the pills from you. You are glad that there is hope. Three minutes later Owen has come back.
"Lilly says thank you," Owen remarks as he sits down in his seat. He starts prep work for the vaccine. An hour later you have decided to take a break. You are getting the protective equipment on so you can check on the people that have received the potential cure. Lilly is helping you.
"Have you seen any difference?" You ask.
"Yes we took three people off the ventilator," Lilly confirms. At least there is some good news. Three minutes later you have finished getting the stuff on. You enter the ward. You are amazed that the number of people on the ventilators is going down.
"Kelsea come here," It's James. You approach him to find he is talking to an old man. He is cheerful.
"What can I do for you, James?" You enquire as you approach the man.
"This is Mr Jones is one of the many people you will be helping," James replies. It is good to see that your work is having an impact.
"Thank you, Miss Scott," Mr Jones remarks. You are almost overwhelmed by happiness.
"Mr Jones it was a pleasure," you smile at him.
"But if you don't mind I need to see other patients," he nods and you leave. You move on to the next patient. This time it is a middle-aged girl. She is looking much better but you wouldn't know because you didn't see her when she came in.
"How are you feeling today Joanna?" You ask as you glance at her charts. You also have a look at the dosage.
"Better," she responds.
"Are you feeling any adverse side effects? I have to ask," you hope your questions are not annoying. She shakes her head.
"I don't think so,"
An hour later you are in the lab helping Owen with the vaccine. You write down some notes. Owen releases a frustrated growl. Your luck has run out but you are still happy you found a possible cure. Your thoughts are interrupted
"Kelsea you are required on the comfort," it's James.
"What do I need?" you ask just in case.
"Some clothing just in case you are on board for a while," James confirms. You grab your notebook. You and James both leave.
"Where do I go when I am ready?" You ask. You are a little baffled by the procedure of transferring to another vessel.
"Meet me on deck by the lifeboats on the right side facing the front," He responds.
"I will see you soon," You break away from James. Two minutes later you have made it to your bunk space. You are stuffing some clothes in a duffle bag. You are thinking about Captain Harper. Thirty seconds later you have finished so you start heading to the lifeboats. You are stopped.
"Kelsea," It's Lilly. You turn around.
"What can I do for you, Lilly?"
"Make sure the CMO on the comfort gets this," She passes you a piece of paper. You read it. You are surprised because it is the dosage information.
"Will do," You respond as Lilly goes back to whatever she was doing. Three minutes later you have made it to the lifeboats and you spot a boat that is ready to go. You head towards it.
"Here put this on," James throws you a life jacket. Thirty seconds later you have put it on. You board the boat. Ten tense minutes later you are now aboard the comfort. You are greeted by an en energetic Captain Harper.
"Thank you for coming," She remarks.
"Don't worry about it," you are glad you could help.
"Captain, can I talk to your CMO?" you ask. You suddenly remember Lilly's request. You are glad you remembered. She gestures for you to follow her so you do. Two minutes later you have found the CMO Jay Gagarin
"Lilly wants me to give you this," You pass him the note. He reads it as if his life depended on it. He is impressed.
"Jay what does it say," Olivia asks just to make sure that she understands.
"It's the dosage info," He responds.
"I'll make sure the other doctors know," He dashes off. You smile. Ten minutes later You have made it to the lab. You are thinking about how similar the two ships are when your thoughts are cut off.
"You must be Kelsea. My name is Jamie,"
"Yes that's right," you confirm. You are horrified at how messy the lab is. You start to wonder if Jamie has gotten any work done.
"You are thinking the lab could do with a clean up ain't you," Jamie reads your mind. You are impressed. You giggle.
"Good luck at getting me to tidy," She basically threatens you. At least you know working alongside Jamie will be better than working with Owen. You sit down and place your notebook on the table.
"So Jamie where did you get up to?" You ask because you are not sure if she made the same progress as you and Owen.
"Well, Owen is a lucky devil because he got help from a civilian. no offence so I only got as far as the idea stage," She offers you her notebook. You trade yours for hers. You both start reading. The detail in her notes is so breathtakingly neat. You wish you could say the same about your handwriting. While you wait for Jamie to finish with your notes you decide to clean up a bit. Two minutes later she has finished with your notebook.
"I know you wrote notes in your notebook but when you were talking to the patients did you notice anything off about them?" Jamie asks. You understand why she is sceptical.
"There were no observed side effects but there is a chance. I've asked Captain Trudeau to keep me informed," You report. Jamie nods. Three hours later you and Jamie have finished manufacturing some of the medication.
"I'll get these to Jay," You remark. You get up and take the medicine. Five minutes later you find Jay who is getting ready to head to the wards.
"Jay before you go take these," You remark as he slips into his gloves.
"Thank you, Kelsea," He remarks as he uses his gloved hands to take the medicine. Again you are glad you can make some difference. You decide to head to the mess hall because you are hungry. You grab some food. Your mind starts to wander.
"Mind if I sit here," Captain Harper asks.
"Huh, oh go ahead," You respond. You were too lost in your thoughts. She sits down opposite you.
"Don't worry I would be lost in my thoughts too," Olivia makes you giggle.
"Anyway, what were you thinking about?"
"If there would be any positions available to someone like me in the military," You are seriously considering enlisting.
"Well, I think James and I could vouch for you," Olivia considers your offer. You eat your food then you head back to the lab. You are surprised because it has been completely cleaned as if Jamie finally realised she is stuck with you.
"So how did dropping the supplies off go?" She asks.
"It went alright," You can't get over the fact that she has cleaned up.
"And yes I have cleaned up," She confirms your thinking.
