A Breakthrough (James)

It has been a day since Mercy arrived in the Hudson. You are checking on the patients. The protective clothing is making you claustrophobic. You are talking to an elderly man.

"Do you know how long I'll be here?" The man asks. You check his charts. He is one of the better patients.

"Mr Jones I'm afraid I don't know but if you need anything feel free to ask for me," you try your best to comfort him. It looks like it worked. You are glad you don't have much administrative work to do because it gives you time to reassure the patients.

"Excuse me, captain," it's Lilly. You move because she has some vials and a needle. You know it means she wants to take some blood samples.

"I'm sorry for interrupting but Kelsea wants some blood samples," Lilly explains herself. You nod.

"Don't worry about it sweetheart I've survived a lot worse," Mr Jones confirms. Lilly gives him a death glare as she gets to work extracting the blood. Ten seconds later she is done.

"The name is Lilly and here," Lilly passes him a cotton ball. He places it on the wound and Lilly tapes it to his skin. She leaves.

"Is she always that moody?" Mr Jones asks. You let out a chuckle and nod.

"Yup," Mr Jones starts coughing and spluttering. You glance at the stat monitor which has started to beep.

"I need some help," A flock of other doctors come to your aid. You all get to work to help Mr Jones.

"Will we need to sedate and intubate?" one of the doctors asks. You nod. He gets the sedative ready.

"Mr Jones we are going to sedate you so we can help you breathe," you inform him as the other doctor passes you a needle. You inject the substance into his arm. He soon falls asleep. You intubate. Three minutes later you have made sure he is on the ventilator. He is. You are getting ready to go back to the bridge. You are being helped out of the protective clothing by Lilly. You wish you were dealing with refugees again. You know it's going to be a long time before you can see your family back in San Diego.

"Do you think it will be a long one?" Lilly asks. You nod as you slip the medical gown off.

"I'm going to head to the mess hall if you want to join me," You offer because you could do with the company. If Lilly doesn't say yes maybe Kelsea will join you.

"No sorry I've got things to deal with. Maybe Kelsea will join you," Lilly suggests. You wish you were back in San Diego with the skeleton crew. You head to the mess hall. It's busy. You join the queue.

"You can go in front of me captain," Ianto remarks. He shuffles away.

"Don't worry I'm in no rush," You respond. Ianto shuffles back into position in front of you. Kelsea rushes to join you.

"Captain I hope you don't mind but I need to talk to you," She is excited about something.

"Let me get something to eat and then we'll talk," you respond. You are glad to have the company. Two minutes later you have gotten your food and you are listening to Kelsea.

"I think I may have a possible cure. I just need your permission and some volunteers," she explains her plan. You take a few seconds to think about it.

"Will you let me ask Captain Harper to see what he has to say?" You think it would be a good idea to get a second opinion. You are glad that she can help. You take a bite from your sandwich. You have to complement the chief.

"You are thinking about how good the food is aren't you?" Lilly joins you.

"Yes. Jackie has done a good job," you confirm. You wonder if she knows about Kelsea's plan. You decide to ask.

"Lilly has Kelsea told you her plan yet?"

"Yes, she has. In fact, I think she told me before coming to you," she responds. You both take a bite out of the food.

"You were the first," Kelsea confirms.

"Then I told Owen and then James," You are not surprised that she told you first. A thought starts nagging at your mind but you decide to leave it till you talk to Captain Harper.

"Excuse me I have to make a call," you excuse yourself. Two minutes later you have made it your quarters which are also acting as the main office. You set up your laptop. You hope that Captain Harper is online. You click a few buttons.

"Hello, James. What can I do for you?" You are greeted by Captain Olivia Harper of the USNS Comfort.

"Hello Olivia," You respond.

"One of my civilian doctors has found a possible cure and I was wondering if you would have any volunteers for human trails," you hope she says yes.

"I'll ask around because I think I might," she responds. That's the news you want to hear.

"Thank you. I'll let Kelsea know," you respond.

"No worries," You end the conversation there. You get up. Three minutes later you have made it to the lab that Kelsea is working. Thankfully she is there. Owen intercepts you.

"Captain I was thinking we could reverse engineer the cure to create a vaccine," Owen remarks.

"Can it wait till I have finished talking to Kelsea," you feel a little bad for not hearing out but you need to tell Kelsea the good news. He nods.

"So James is it good news?" you can tell she is concerned.

"Yes. Captain Harper said she will ask around," you respond. She lights up.

"Thank you, James," she remarks. You can tell she is genuinely grateful.

"And Owen," you start. You decide to let him do what he needs to do.

"Yes Captain?" he responds. He is a little confused.

"You can try and make a vaccine from the cure if it works," You clear the confusion. You have complete faith that it will work. Kelsea smiles at the news.
