Jodi Picoult's words made me think immediately of our children.

We adopted them all as older children, two of them at a little over four years old, and one at just eighteen months, with no relationship to each other.

Each had been wounded emotionally, but we always believed enough love and security would heal them - probably never completely - but just like a scar that reminds you a hurt happened long ago, that's all it is... a memory.

We were wrong.

The pain stayed and affected them in different but equally difficult ways. They have flown away from us now, (and sadly, each other as well) and we believe they do stay hurt, despite our best efforts.

It's a sad truth for all of us.

The quote we try never to forget is -
