Heart-starter

Perhaps my fondest memory of the good old 'bacon 'n eggs' breakfast was from many years ago when a number of us parents with a huge bunch of kids between us, would holiday together in our caravans. Caravan parks provided the most affordable and sensible options to we, the 'pocket poor', with the added benefits of freedom of play (and playgrounds) and the vast age range of our kids ensuring there was always someone older to look out for someone younger... allowing the parents a bit of a holiday as well.

And the bacon 'n eggs brekkies? Due to the number of kids, we were ALL up bright and early every day, and it didn't take long at all for hunger pains to begin in earnest. Yet another tradition was born. The one where all our folding tables were lined up between the two rows of caravans, alongside another line of portable barbecues. As soon as the Mums provided the cartons of eggs and packets of bacon, the Dads began cooking up a storm. Someone else had a large powerboard on a l-o-n-g extension cord, and numerous toasters added their sensuous scent to the mouth-watering aromas already drifting on the breeze. Fold-a-chairs were assembled, tables set up (with at least one devoted to piles of plates, cutlery, condiments, sauces, and containers of juices), and just in case it all sounds too healthy to be true, a few bottles of icy cold champagne magically popped out of refrigerators, too.

Inside the caravans, all the hot drink necessities were put on trays as kettles boiled, to wash all the goodies down at a leisurely pace... at last! Outside, other caravan doors were opening to show the wishful faces of men who were not of 'our gang', and whose wives were still fast asleep. We almost felt sorry for them... almost!
