20-Abandoned City
About a week passes by and Lord Death had summoned Kid and me to the Death Room. I was pretty sure it was for another mission, Kid and I often had missions together now.
We headed to the Death Room right away with our weapons. Entering the room, we were greeted by Lord Death, like usual.
"Hiya, Luna, Kiddo! Wazzup?! Nice to see you!"
"Hello, father. You have a mission for us?"
He quickly nodded. "I do. Luna, you've been searching for the owl witch lately, correct?"
"I have."
"Then this mission is perfect for you. There's a deserted city in the north that is said to be a meeting place for witches. I want you two to check it out."
I grinned. "Perfect, I finally got a lead on Maple."
Lord Death quickly held up a hand to get our attention. "But there's a catch. The reason I'm sending you two is because there is a protective field around the city that is harmful to humans. Kid being a reaper, and you, Luna, having your wolf form, you two should be unharmed by it. I can't say the same about your weapons though."
Kid questioned, "So our weapons can't enter the city?"
I then gestured to myself. "And animals can?"
Lord Death said, "I'll explain. Kid has the body and soul of a reaper. Luna, when you change into your wolf form, your body is that of an animal, and your soul changes slightly to match. Your weapon's souls, however, stay the same when they change into weapon form."
Kid slowly nodded. "Ah, I see. We can bring our weapons on the mission, but they can't enter the city."
I placed my hands on my hips. "No problem. We'll report our findings on the abandoned city."
I bowed my head and we all turned and began leaving. We could hear Lord Death calling out to us.
"Good luck, you two!"
We left and let our partners take their weapon forms so we could carry them. Kid summoned his skateboard and helped me on behind him.
I was careful not to scratch him as I wrapped my clawed hands around him to hold on. We took off north of Death City.
It took awhile, but not as long as I thought. We flew quickly across the sky, passing over forests and rivers until our destination was in sight.
I peeked around Kid to get a look at the place. A huge city abandoned by people. The sun was beginning to set as we landed outside the city.
Our weapons changed back to normal and stood around under the trees. Drake let out a sigh.
"I guess we'll be waiting out here then."
I nodded and smiled. "Don't worry, we'll be back before you know it."
Liz shuddered and rubbed her arms. "Please don't take too long, this place gives me the creeps."
Kid told her, "Sorry, Liz, but depending on what we find it may take longer than expected."
I winked at them. "But don't you worry, there's nothing we can't handle."
Drew nodded. "That's true."
I changed to my wolf form and looked up at Kid. "Well, let's get going."
He nodded and walked alongside me into the city. I could hear Patty yell, "Be careful!"
We looked around upon entering the city. I began sniffing around as we walked.
"Witches have definitely been here. Their scents cover this place."
"Can you follow them?"
"I can try, but there are so many scents, it'll be tricky."
I sniffed around, slowly following a trail of scents. After a bit, it had gotten completely dark. I stopped and sighed.
"This is getting us nowhere. These scents are all over the place."
"Well, now what?"
My ears perked up upon hearing a howl in the distance. I looked in the direction it came from and noticed Kid looking in the same direction.
"Wolves? Here?"
I grinned. "Maybe I can get some information from them."
I tilted my head up and let out a howl. I listened for a moment, hearing a howl in response to mine.
I began running toward the howl as I heard Kid running behind me. Running down streets, we finally came to a small pack of wolves.
I slowly approached them with my ears back and tail tucked in, showing that I wasn't a threat. The leader of the pack sniffed at me.
"A lone wolf? Here?"
"I'm only passing through. I only wanted to ask you if you've seen witches come through here."
He seemed to nod his head in response. "Of course we have. Their scents litter this abandoned old city."
"Do you know where they go? Do they have some kind of meeting place or anything around here?"
The wolf let out a low growl. "I wouldn't know. We tend to keep away from them. Cruel creatures, they are."
"Alright. Thank you for the information."
I bowed my head to him before backing away. The wolf barked to his pack and they all took off down the street.
I went over to Kid as he looked at me questioningly. "Find anything out?"
I sighed. "All I know is that witches do come here often. I don't know if they have a secret meeting place or what."
"Well, let's look around and see what we can find."
I nodded. "Good thing I can see in the dark."
We made our way toward the center of the city. On the way, I occasionally sniffed the ground, seeing if I could pick up any new scents.
I suddenly smelt something vaguely familiar. I stopped in my tracks, thinking where I've smelt this scent before.
I noticed Kid stop and look at me. "Luna?"
I snarled as I remembered this scent. "Maple."
I began running, following the scent until it stopped at a small cemetery. I froze at what I saw.
Hovering over each grave, was a human soul. With my heightened senses, I could see transparent skeletal-like figures floating in place of the souls.
I suddenly heard footsteps behind me and looked back to see Kid panting as he stopped and stood beside me.
"Luna, warn me next time before you take off like that."
"Sorry, Kid."
My gaze went back to the ghostly figures above the graves. It was a horrific sight to see.
"Luna, you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
I glanced up at him. "That's right. You can't see what I see. Over each grave, where you simply see a human soul, I also see the ghostly remains of their owners."
I suddenly realized the ghosts were all pointing toward the far end of the cemetery. I approached a few of them, glancing toward the direction they pointed.
"What are you trying to show me?"
I noticed Kid come over and give me a confused look. I looked at him.
"They're pointing to something. I think there's something they want to show us."
Kid followed me as I followed the direction the ghosts pointed. I finally stopped at a small tombstone under a tree. I gasped at what it said.
Kid read it aloud. "In memory of Gracia Shade, the savior of this city. Gracia Shade? Could she be...?"
"...My mother?"
I felt tears well up in my eyes. "I don't understand. What happened to her? Why was she here?"
I tilted my head down as I sat in front of the tombstone, letting a few tears fall down my face. I suddenly felt arms wrap around me and realized Kid was hugging me.
"Kid?"
"Shh, it's okay. I'm here for you. Please don't cry."
Since I couldn't hug him back, I simply laid my head on his shoulder. "Thanks, Kid."
"Awww, what a touching moment."
We both pulled away and looked up, seeing Maple in her owl form sitting in the tree. I growled at her.
"Maple. I thought I'd find you here."
She chuckled. "Really? Am I that predictable?"
She suddenly started flying away. I began running after her. "Wait! Please, tell me about my past!"
She landed on a roof, looking down at me. "Weeeell...okay. I suppose it's time to tell you the truth."
I noticed Kid caught up and was now standing a bit behind me. Maple began explaining.
"Your parents were both powerful, magic weapon wielding meisters, defending towns and cities from kishin and witches. Even after you were born, they would still travel with their weapons to wherever they were needed. This very city was defended by your mother."
She tilted her feathered head. "Killing off so many witches, Oakley and I decided to get them out of the way. We hunted them down, killing your mother here, while your father was back home with you."
I felt a low growl erupt from my throat. "After your parents were dead, I was ready to kill you off as well, fearing you'd grow into a strong meister like them. But Oakley stopped me. Seeing something special in you, seeing the power you wield inside, she allowed you to live."
Her beak turned up in a wicked grin. "And once you were old enough, she placed a curse on you. She haunted you as all the people you knew turned their backs on you, afraid of what you were. Oakley hoped that after you had lost everything, you'd join her and become her loyal little puppet."
She sighed. "But you refused and began hunting her down instead. She had no other option but to kill you. She knew about your power as a meister and ability to use magic weapons. She was really hoping to take you in as her own, and you killed her for it."
I growled at her. "Of course. You make it sound as if she cared about me. But she only wanted to use me for my abilities."
"Even so, she was willing to take you in and give you a home. And you repaid her by killing her!"
Kid stepped into the argument. "Your sister paid for what she did, now it's time for you to do the same!"
She yelled in anger, "Quiet, little reaper! This doesn't concern you!"
I heard Kid's voice soften a bit. "But it does. If Luna is in this, then so am I."
Maple frowned. "Fine. Luna, we'll finish this later, say, outside of Death City. Owl, Owl, Hypnotic Eyes!"
Kid's pov
Maple's eyes glowed a bright yellow as she stared down at Luna. Luna seemed as if she were frozen, staring up at the witch.
Maple's eyes soon faded back to their pale blue color as she grinned. "Have fun!"
I narrowed my eyes as she flapped her wings and flew away. What does she mean 'have fun'? I then looked over at Luna.
Her head slowly turned toward me, showing her fangs as she growled at me. "Luna?"
She didn't answer, instead, she slowly moved toward me, still growling. I stepped back a bit. Did Maple hypnotize her? Is that what that spell did?
"Luna, snap out of it!"
She continued advancing toward me, purple eyes glinting in the moonlight. In an instant, she leapt up at me.
I put my arm up in front of me and watched as her jaws clamped down on my arm and I was pushed to the ground. Now sitting on the ground, I winced as blood poured out of my arm.
I stared into Luna's expressionless eyes as she growled, keeping her hold on my arm. I simply sat there, watching her for a moment.
I slowly reached out my other hand and placed it on her head, wincing again as her fangs sunk deeper into my arm. I gently rubbed her head, hoping to calm her down.
"Luna, I won't fight you. You have to gain control. Don't let Maple do this to you. Don't let her turn you into a monster."
She suddenly stopped growling and I could see the emotion in her eyes return. She quickly let go of my arm and backed away.
"K-Kid? What happened? Why was I...?"
I grabbed my bleeding arm and managed a small smile. "It's okay, it wasn't your fault."
"I...I..."
"Let's just get out of here and return to Death City."
She simply nodded and followed me out of the city. We met up again with our weapons outside. I explained to them what we found out and what had happened.
Luna had changed back to human form while the others took their weapon forms. I summoned Beelzebub and we all flew back to Death City.
Luna was mostly quiet the whole time. I knew she was upset about what had happened and I didn't say anything to her for now.
The sun was already rising by the time we got home. I allowed Luna to report to my father while I headed to the infirmary.
Naigus quickly cleaned and bandaged my arm. "There, all done. The wounds are deep, so it may take some time to fully heal."
"Okay, thank you."
I quietly left and headed home to Gallows Mansion with my hands in my pockets. Good thing it was Saturday, that mission took all night and we could all use a good rest.
I just hope Luna isn't too hard on herself. I know she blames herself for what happened to me.
I went inside and headed upstairs. No one was downstairs, so I guess the others were resting just as I planned to do. As I walked down the hall, I found myself in front of Luna's room.
I quietly opened the door, peeking in to see Luna asleep in her bed. I went over to her, a smile tugging at my lips as I moved a few stray hairs from her face.
Luna's pov
I could feel Kid's fingers graze my skin. I kept still, pretending to be asleep. Once I heard his footsteps fade and the door quietly shut, I opened my eyes slightly.
I felt a tear run down my face. I still can't believe I did that to him. Maybe I am a monster after all. I'm sorry, Kid. I'm so sorry.
