Room Mates
"Maman, Papa, I have something I need to tell you."
Marinette sat, leg raised, on the sofa with her parents both staring at her intently. This was it, this was the moment her parents would know that in two weeks they'd need to close the bakery and be teleported to the Maldives.
During some recent planning, Marinette had realised that she hadn't organised a cake. Since she was six years old she was determined her parents would be the only option for her wedding cake. Since she was fourteen years old one of the layers to the four tier wedding cake was Passionfruit flavoured.
"I need you to close the bakery, only for a couple of days, or maybe a week, it's just I need you both to be somewhere important with me."
"Right?" Tom Dupain seemed skeptical and her mother, Sabine, just seemed confused.
"And why would we need to do that Marinette?"
She covered her mouth and looked away.
"Because I'm getting married." Her words were barely heard over the thundering of her own heart in her chest. It was out now, she'd finally told them. Another thing ticked off her list.
"You're what?" Sabine questioned.
Marinette sighed, removed her hand and took a deep breath. This time, looking her parents in the eye, she said it again.
"I'm getting married."
Tom and Sabine looked at each other before bursting out laughing. Marinette didn't know whether to laugh with them, or cry. This was not the response she was expecting.
"Is it really that funny?" She asked.
"Oh, Marinette," Tom said wiping a tear from under his eye, "how many painkillers have you had today? I thought you were only taking one now."
"I haven't overdosed again, I swear. I am actually getting married."
The room fell silent as Tom and Sabine looked at each other. They looked back at their darling daughter, the girl who never broke rules and was well known as a goody two shoes getting married without them knowing. No chance. They burst out laughing again.
"Good one, honey." Sabine placed a hand over Marinette's, smiling widely to her daughter. Tom was currently struggling to get his breathing back on track.
"I bet ..." Tom couldn't talk for laughter, "I bet you want us to make your cake too, and for it to be teleported to wherever the wedding is going to be."
"Well, actually -"
"Yeah, and let me guess one layer needs to be Passion Fruit because it's his favourite flavour,"
"And because it's November, and Marinette wanted warm weather it has to be somewhere hot, like the Bahamas,"
"Yeah, or the Carribean."
Tom and Sabine were now clinging onto each other laughing. Was it that unbelievable that their daughter could get married?
"Don't forget the groom," Sabine said, barely clinging onto her own sanity.
Tom broke into a monstrous roar of laughter as he said the name.
"Adrien Agreste."
Tom and Sabine continued laughing as Marinette watched on in complete bewilderment. Her parents didn't believe it. Her parents thought she was having a laugh with them, oh this wouldn't do. Time to move onto the second item on the list.
"I'm Ladybug and I'm marrying Chat Noir in two weeks time, at a chapel in the Maldives."
Tom and Sabine abruptly stopped. Sabine looked to Tom only to see the surprise and shock mirrored in his expressions.
"I don't think she's kidding." Sabine said to her husband.
"I tend to agree."
Tom coughed and placed his hands into his lap. Where did he start?
"You're Ladybug? As in the superhero?" He asked.
"Yes," replied Marinette.
"That's why you had so many absences at college?" Sabine questioned, only for Marinette to reply in a firm nod.
"And you're telling us this now, because?" Tom looked at his daughter, not quite sure whether he knew who she actually was anymore. His darling daughter. The confident woman who had saved Paris three times along with her trusted sidekick in a catsuit.
All of a sudden, Tom Dupain was very much against his daughter marrying that type of male.
"And you're marrying Chat? The guy who said he didn't love you that he loved another? The guy who got me akumatised and almost hurt you?"
"Tom," Sabine warned.
"The guy who prances around Paris in a cat costume and flirts with anything that moves. Even I've been on the receiving end of one of those winks." Marinette squirmed, her shoulders folding in on herself.
"He didn't love Marinette me because he was so loyal and devoted to the other me."
"He's a philanderer!"
"Tom!" Sabine shouted at her husband, but Marinette was having none of it.
"You know what then father," the word leaving her mouth with an acidic tone, "don't come. I wanted you to walk me down the aisle and give me away to the love of my life, but if you're going to insult him I don't want you there."
"Marinette, be reasonable, do you even know him under the mask? He could be anyone." Sabine walked over and sat next to Marinette taking a hand in hers. She looked it over and Marinette knew she was looking for a ring, anything to support Marinette's words.
"I've known him since I was thirteen years old, I see him on a daily basis, he's given me more flowers than I can recall and the most beautiful engagement ring." She pulled the necklace from under her t-shirt. "He is kind, loyal, caring, funny. He's saved my life a thousand times over. He supports me and encourages me and he is and always will be my best friend. You either support this or you don't? Either way we're getting married in two weeks whether you like it or not."
"You see a mask, Marinette. He might be nothing like this in the real world. You don't know him. You don't know his friends, his family, whether he has a stable job or if he's unemployed. You don't even know what he looks like." Tom stood up, his voice booming around the room.
"Do you really think I'm shallow enough to be with someone because of their looks?" Marinette pushed off her mother's shoulder to stand up, facing off with her father.
"And both Luka and Adrien have such sparkling personalities."
Marinette stood staring at her father. This was not how she expected today to go. She thought they'd be excited and supportive. She was marrying someone who risked their life daily for her, how could they be so cruel.
"You know what?" She stated, "I'm done. Tikki, spots on."
For the first time since Marinette had become Ladybug, her parents watched her transform. Both stepped back with startled gasps as Marinette made her way to her room.
"Marinette," Sabine called, running towards where the girl was heading, "your father didn't -"
"Didn't what? Mean it? Not only did he insult me, he insulted two of my best friends AND the love of my life. I'm going out, and don't know if I'll be back tonight."
"Be careful." Sabine whispered, the words feeling pointless and stupid considering who her daughter was.
"I've taken down three world super villains, and regularly face other criminals. I think I'll be ok." She gave one last look to her father before making her way up to her balcony.
Breaking down in tears, she called the one person she could rely on. The one person who really mattered. As soon as she heard his voice she settled. This was all she needed, he was all she needed.
"Kitty, can you meet me at our spot?"
"Of course."
Less than five minutes later she was safe and secure in his arms. The familiar feel and scent comforting her after the brief conversation with her parents.
"Just be glad you didn't tell them during 'high-gate', they'd think you only agreed to marry me because you were drugged up."
She let out a snotty laugh as she remained wrapped around his waist.
"I called my papa, father."
"Ouch!" Chat replied, "it must have been bad."
"I feel awful for just storming out, I acted like such an immature brat, yet I was telling them I was getting married. Laughable really."
Chat kissed the top of her head. He was quite positive Tom had meant well, and hearing the argument he was sure he'd feel the same if it was their daughter. A buzz of excitement ran through him. Their daughter. A tiny him and Marinette, blonde hair and dazzling blue eyes, or maybe green eyes and raven hair, either way they were going to be stunning. He only had to look at their mother to figure that out.
It has almost been a week since they'd taken down Felix, and apart from Adrien realising he needed a new family, he'd been surprisingly chipper. Marinette was his Ladybug, she was the one who loved him, all of him, crappy family and all. Yes he had a scream when he returned home, plus a rant to both Alya and Nino (separately of course), but now he was okay. Actually, he was better than okay, he was feeling incredible. He couldn't say too much to Nino, just that he'd found out her identity and that he knew her from work (not a lie), but he'd never thought of her as more than a friend (a complete lie).
Talking to Alya, however, was a breath of fresh air. He could rave, and love, and plan for their upcoming nuptials. One thing was for sure, Adrien would move mountains for Marinette, and from what he could gather, she would do the same for him, be it Adrien, or Chat Noir.
"Just think about if it was your daughter marrying someone they'd never met before, that they didn't know, that you don't actually know. Yes it hurts to think they don't trust me to be your husband, I mean, look what we've been through and I am honoured that you defended me, but just give them some time to cool off. It'll be ok." He stroked the back of her head as she squeezed into him tightly.
"I've never fell out with my parents like that. I told them not to come to the wedding."
"They know you were saying it in the heat of the moment, and I don't think they'd miss it for the world. They'll come around."
She sighed.
"I suppose."
Even though Ladybug was certain he knew her identity it still remained unspoken. She never brought it up with him and he never did with her. With only two weeks until the wedding what was the point. They were almost there.
"How's the healing going?" He asked. He grabbed her hand and led her to the edge of the rooftop, sitting down alongside her.
"Really good. I think Tikki might actually be able to get me walking for the wedding, and, who knows, maybe even strong enough for our first dance." He smiled at her lit up eyes and excited face. Chat just hoped she felt that way once they'd revealed. There was still a lot to go through to get to the 'I do's'.
As Chat visualised them dancing around the room waving and smiling at guests an enormous sigh sounded beside him.
"Woah, did you just deflate? If you get any smaller I'll lose you."
She let out a strained giggle and rested her head against his shoulder.
"I can't go back home tonight. I suppose I better speak to Rena and see if I can stay there."
Chat Noir looked out into the horizon and his heartbeat went up a notch. He had an idea.
"Come with me." He stood up and offered his hands to her.
Placing her own in his, she stood up and pulled out her yo-yo. A few twists and turns later Chat stopped on a rooftop.
"Close your eyes."
"Why?"
"Do you trust me?"
"With everything I possess." Ladybug closed her eyes and allowed Chat to pick her up. She felt them fall before vaulting up again. The trip was short, before she heard the slide of a door and then Chat's heavy boots on what she suspected was a tile floor.
He placed her down and moved both his hands to her hips, pulling her back tightly against his chest. She felt his hot breath hit her neck as he whispered instructions into her ear.
"Open your eyes."
Slowly she pulled her eyelids apart and gasped in shock. She was standing in an apartment. It was freshly decorated and still smelt of paint. The walls were white with a pink feature wall, pictures and portraits of the two of them hung around the room, and a comfortable couch lay in front of a wall mounted fireplace.
Her hands positioned over her mouth as tears left her eyes.
"What did you do?" She asked.
"Welcome home, Bugaboo, welcome home."
