7: The Twelve Towers Part Two
"Hey look, up ahead! Another tower," I pointed out after we had driven along the Madagascan plains a little while longer, heading to the volcano where our particular tower was situated.
"See any Shoreline mercs?" Sully asked and I pulled out my binoculars.
"No, I think we're clear," I said and Sully sighed.
"You better keep ahold of that thing," Sully said sternly, referencing my binoculars again.
"Yes I am doing!" I insisted and the two Drake brothers glanced at each other, apparently confused.
"Let's check the place out and keep on moving," Sam said, changing the subject and we all hopped out of the truck just after Nate had driven it to the edge of a closed drawbridge.
"Drawbridge? How medieval," Nate noted.
"Well you don't put up a drawbridge unless you're trying to keep people out," Sully said.
"Or protect something inside," Sam said hopefully. We split up to explore, me heading straight to the crumbling tower whilst the boys tried to figure out a way to get the drawbridge open. As I went in the tower I saw another sigil patterned into the ground, this one being of my favourite pirate.
"Hey guys! This tower was Anne Bonny's! Her sigil is right here," I said, sweeping some of the dust on it.
"Avery must've invited her too," Sam said, coming up behind me.
"We're getting quite the collection now," Nate said, flicking through his notebook.
"Well we ain't getting any more unless we figure out a way to open that drawbridge," Sully pointed out and so we split up, finding a way. Of course Nathan had to climb to the very top of Bonny's tower, but he announced that he could see another, even bigger tower just beyond the drawbridge and I hoped that that would be our final destination. It was also Nate who found a way to open the drawbridge so Sully, Sam and I watched him work from the car. That was until Sully shouted that Shoreline were approaching.
I whirled around to see two large, well armed trucks approaching and I quickly grabbed my sniper rifle from the car and hid in a discreet location however it turned messy very quickly. Whilst the boys went charging in I stood from a high vantage point and took out Shoreliners one by one, knocking them down as though they were merely bowling pins.
Thanks to our tenacity we were able to take care of them pretty quickly, but I had lost almost two thirds of my bullets so we quickly raided the dead mercenaries for ammunition before Nate headed back up to the drawbridge crank to get it open for the car. "You alright?" Sam asked kindly as I hoped in the truck.
"Yeah, fine," I said, it being the truth. He nodded with a smirk but the sound of the drawbridge crashing onto the ground made me jump out of my skin. Sully took the wheel and headed through, Nate joining us a moment later and taking over the driving.
"Big tower on a volcano," Nate said, pointing out the tower he saw when he was at the top of Bonny's.
"Looks like the ends in sight, huh?" Sam said optimistically. I had doubts but the last thing I wanted to do was ruin this calm and sweet relationship we had at the moment so I kept quiet as we drove, however once again our path was blocked by a muddy, steep hill.
"Hey, did you know our car came with a winch?" Nate said in a teasing tone.
"No, really?" Sully asked sarcastically and I chuckled. Nate took the winch up some conveniently placed stone steps at the side of the muddy hill and was able to wrap it around a tree at the top before sliding back down.
"Are you sure that's sturdy enough?" I asked skeptically, seeing the cable leaning against a rock in the middle of the muddy slide.
"Sure, why not?" Nate said casually. Slowly Nate drove when suddenly the rock began to slip.
"Oh no," I muttered to myself. The car began to slide quickly, and a second later we found ourselves hanging off the edge of a cliff with nothing but the winch holding us up.
"Okay! Don't panic!" Nate yelled as debris fell on top of us.
"I am very much panicking right now!" Sully shouted.
"The cables gonna snap- (y/n)!" Sam yelled as a large piece of debris hit the bonnet of the car causing it to shake and dislodge me from my seat. I fell out of the car but Sam caught me and was holding me in midair.
"Kid get out out of this!" Sully yelled.
"Alright!" Nate yelled back.
"(y/n), hold on!" Sam shouted as I gripped his forearm tightly.
"What do you think I'm doing?!" I shouted back, however we were both sweaty from the heat and I felt my grip slipping.
"No, hold on (y/n)! Nate, get us outta this!" Sam screamed. "Give me your other hand!"
I tried to reach up as our grip loosened, and just as I was about to fall we reached the edge of the cliff, Nate driving the car over. I fell back into the car and sighed a big sigh of relief, my heart unable to take the intensity of its beating. "Ah... that was fun, right?" Nate said.
"You and I have a very different idea of fun," I hissed threateningly.
"You alright?" Sam asked, helping me up and back into me seat.
"I've been better... but - er - thanks," I muttered.
"Anytime," he said, Nate carrying on the journey to the large tower which was only across a wooden bridge. It was much larger than expected when we approached it, if a little worn down. Parts of it were crumbling away and the steps leading up to it were broken and unkempt. Still we approached the massive structure but of course the entrance was blocked by debris, so we searched for another way in.
"Hey Sam! C'mere," Nate called out to his brother as he investigated a wooden door on a small building next to the tower. Sam helped open it and it led down to a dusty tunnel, us having to push past a few doors in order to get to our desired destination. We headed down a spiral staircase and I spotted Avery's insignia.
"This is definitely the right place," I muttered.
"Hey guys! This way!" Sam called out, him having run ahead.
"He seems excited," Sully chuckled.
"Well he's got a lot riding on this," Nate said. Soon the tunnel opened up into a large room. What was once an undoubtedly magnificent room was now filled with crumbling pillars and broken stairs that led to an almost non-existent second floor. Sam was on the other side of the room looking at what looked like a mural on the wall, so the three of us followed.
"Come check this out," Sam said, gesturing the mural with various shapes, carvings and in particular a statue of the familiar Saint Dismas.
"So, what do we got?" Sully asked.
"More sigils," I pointed out with satisfaction, there being twelve on this mural. "So we've got Avery, Tew, Bonny-,"
"Baldridge, Farrell and Want..." Sam finished and I smirked. "Okay fine I admit it, it seems pretty likely that they pooled all their treasure together."
"So what's the trick here?" Nate asked and the two boys began feeling up Saint Dismas. I folded my arms and glanced at Sully who looked just as skeptical as I did.
"Boys, whenever you're done fondling poor Saint Dismas, you might wanna look at this," Sully said, gesturing the mural as a whole. "The trapezoid is the volcano. The crown is Kings Bay. We've got ourselves a map."
"Victor your a goddamn genius," Sam said, staring at the mural with wonder.
"Look, we're in Avery's tower now, there's his sigil... the other towers must line up with the ones on this map..." Nate and the boys began discussing the whereabouts of the towers and which one the treasure could be in, but something caught my attention.
"Er, Sam? You haven't had a cigarette, have you?" I asked, picking up a stub I found lying on the floor, it still smoking.
"No, I could do with one though," he said, the boys turning to face me.
"Damn, looks like we're not the first ones here," Sully said.
"FIRE IN THE HOLE!" a voice shouted and above us what remained of the roof shook as an explosion blasted. Debris came crashing down around us, as well as several mercenaries who rappelled down, their guns blazing.
"Ah shit!" I shouted, pulling out my pistol as there was no good vantage point for me to use my rifle.
"It's an ambush!" Sam shouted as more and more kept on coming. A man in body armour carrying a very large gun headed towards me so I hid behind a pillar and threw two grenades, it only blowing the armour off of him. He seemed to have endless ammunition which barely gave me a chance to shot back, but in the blasts his helmet had been dislodged and I was able to get a clean headshot.
More mercenaries rappelled down, but despite being heavily outnumbered we still managed to shoot them all down. "Jesus... is that all of them?" Sully asked, panting.
"Let's hope so. Is everyone okay?" Nate asked and I nodded, however I realised Sam wasn't with us.
"Sam?"
"Over here!" He called and we ran over to him, seeing him crouched over a mercenary and rummaging in his pocket.
"Er... what're you doing?" I asked and he pulled out a sheet of paper.
"Confirming a theory... shit," Sam handed the sheet to Nate who's face fell.
"They figured out the towers too," Nate muttered and I sighed in defeat.
"So now what?" Sully asked.
"Now what? Now we're screwed because there's dozens of them and only four of us, and they have a head start!" Sam was clearly agitated.
"But they don't know which tower to go to yet," Nate said, approaching the mural in thought.
"Oh that's great Nathan 'cos neither do we," Sam huffed.
"Yes we do," Nate said, and I saw he was holding the coin. We approached to get a better look, and he was putting the coin against one of the sigils. "It's faded a little but right there, that's a match," Nate said confidently, holding it up to Edward England's sigil on the mural, it being a pair of traditional scales. The shape on the worn down coin was definitely similar.
"Are you sure, 'cos it could be this one too," Sam pointed to Joseph Farrell's sigil, it being the head of a trident. Nate flipped the coin upside down to reveal that Sam was right.
"Crap," Nate muttered.
"Hey, two beats the hell outta twelve," Sully pointed out.
"Alright. (y/n) and I will take this tower, you and Sully, you take that one-,"
"No, no, no we're not splitting up! Rafe's men are all over these towers-," Nate tried to interject.
"Exactly. So if we wanna have a chance to catch them, we gotta split up," Sam said.
"He's right Nate, these towers are at opposite ends of Kings Bay. There's no way we'd be able to search both of them before Rafe's guys," I said and Nate sighed, muttering a swear word under his breath.
When we were back outside Sam and I clambered into one of Shoreline's left over jeeps, and I pulled out the map I had in my pocket. "If you run into any of those Shoreline clown you call us, right?" Nate said protectively.
"Got it. See you at the motel," Sam said and the boys nodded before we drove off, down the volcano and back towards Kings Bay.
