Sunday Fun Day
You woke up the next day in your bed. It didn't really make sense, you remembered falling asleep on the couch. You stretched under the blanket you had last night and it hit you, Katakuri must have carried you to bed. Now that you thought about it, you did somewhat recall being carried up the stairs at some point. The memory was pretty vague, it felt more like a dream at the time.
A warm feeling worked it's way into your chest. You could get used the the more sweet side of him no problem, it was much easier to work with than his usual moody demeanor.
You got out of bed and checked the time. It was a bit after 9. Thanks to Katakuri's company, you'd gotten to sleep at a somewhat decent time and actually felt rested.
You decided it was time for a quick shower before heading downstairs. Though once you got under the hot water, that would be easier said than done. Maybe it wouldn't be a quick shower after all, the water felt too good against your skin to not stay under it for a while. It relaxed all the tension in your muscles that you didn't even notice had built up. It was a little disappointing when you finally finished.
By the time you were clean and dressed, it was just about 10. You hopped downstairs, hearing Katakuri shuffling around in the kitchen. It looked like he was attempting to make something for breakfast again.
"You know, you're gonna want to add a little more mix to that or those are going to be some super thin pancakes." You ran a hand through your still damp (h/l) (h/c) hair, smirking as he tried to thicken the runny batter.
"I don't cook." He grumbled.
"I can tell." You held your hand out for the mixing spoon and he gave it to you with a huff. "It's a good thing I can."
After a short lesson on how to make a decent breakfast, Katakuri had started to get the hang of it. The food came out good and both of you were happy.
"So what's with all the sweet stuff?"
"What do you mean?" He took the empty plate you offered and rinsed it off before placing it in the dishwasher.
"There's all kinds of sugary stuff always in here and you eat more of it than literally any other kind of food."
"You say it like it's a bad thing."
"Most people would consider it to be just that."
He shrugged and dried off his hands, dishes now done. "We were raised eating sweets all the time. The habit never left I guess."
"You don't get sick of it?"
"No. Everyone in the family has a bit of a sweet tooth."
"If you say so."
Katakuri grabbed his car keys from a hook on the wall. "Ready to go?"
"Go? Go where?" You arched an eyebrow at him.
"Don't know yet, we can see what catches our interest."
"Oh, okay. Yeah sure." He never felt like the type to do things without planning, but here he was, proving you wrong.
The rest of the day went smoothly, no emotional breakdowns or anything. You chatted about small things as he drove, picking up where you left off the night before. Eventually he pointed out an event going on in town. It was kind of like a late fall festival with vendor stalls lining the streets in front of businesses. Food stalls dotted in between, already cooking up some of the best smelling food.
Your eyes lit up the second you saw everything. Katakuri took that as his signal to find a spot to park and check out the festivities. You loved these kinds of events. There was always something fun to do or interesting things to see. Not to mention nothing beat the food, especially funnel cakes.
You gasped, your breath forming little clouds in the cold air. "We could get funnel cakes!"
"Let's check everything out before we do that." He placed a gloved hand on your shoulder, lightly pushing you towards the closest stalls. "And if you want something let me know."
You nodded, zipping up your jacket to keep the cold air out and began checking out the vendors. There was a huge variety of items. Some stalls had handmade jewelry while others sold farm goods like home made preservatives. There was one selling small metal sculptures and another with glass blown decorative pieces.
"This is amazing!" You'd only gone through half of the event and the crowd was beginning to thicken as the day wore on.
"Never been to one before? This is all pretty normal stuff." Katakuri moved closer to you, trying to avoid getting separated as people walked around you.
"I went to one once but it was years ago. I technically wasn't even supposed to go. I was grounded for weeks when my parents found out." You giggled. "It was totally worth it though."
"Well they do this every year and there's one in the summer too. We can go all the time if you want."
An excited smile worked it's way into your face. "I'd love that. Wait, do you even like these kinds of things? I didn't even bother asking earlier." A sudden wave of guilt washed over you. What if he hated this and was only going along with it because you wanted to?
"They aren't too bad. There's usually something new every year too. There's supposed to be fireworks once it gets dark this time."
"We don't have to stick around if you don't want to."
"It's fine." He shook his head. "I'm interested in the fireworks. And there's still funnel cake to be had as well." Katakuri tugged at the corners of his scarf but if it wasn't there you'd swear you'd see a smile on his face.
"Okay, do we want to check out the rest of the stalls?" You were being more careful, making sure he was actually going to enjoy himself.
"Sure. Hold on first." He got closer before you walked off and grabbed your hand. "As small as you are, I'd lose you in this crowd in a heartbeat." Even through the gloves, his hand was warm as it enveloped yours.
You wished you had a scarf. A light pink dusted your cheeks as he gave your hand a light squeeze. "Are you cold?" He asked, notice the color in your face.
"Oh! No I'm fine. I mean, it's a little chilly but I'm good." The words spilled out of your mouth quickly. "L-lets check out over there!" You tugged him along to another stall to avoid him looking further into it.
Katakuri ended up buying you a matching set of gloves and a scarf, thinking the weather was the reason for the color in your face. Even though you felt you didn't need them, you wore the ensemble anyway. It helped hide the blush that kept creeping up your face each time he made sure you weren't too cold.
Once you'd gone through all the stalls, he bought you and him each a funnel cake to eat in the car, warming up with the treat while waiting for it to get dark enough for fireworks to start. You never saw him take a bite of course. The guy was like a food ninja.
"So they should be shooting them off from over there." Katakuri pointed past some buildings. "I think we can find a good spot on that hill and get a good view." There was a decent sized hill close by. It was in a park where some of the stalls were at. Most of the crowd hadn't noticed the spot so it was pretty clear.
"It looks good to me, less people there too."
"Exactly." He was getting tired of all the people.
You left the warmth of the car and followed Katakuri up the hill, a little disappointed that he wasn't holding your hand anymore. Once he found a spot away from anyone else, you settled beside him, shivering slightly. It was completely dark out now and it was only getting colder.
"It got real fucking cold real quick." He shivered as well and pulled you closer by your shoulder. "If it gets too cold we can go back to the car."
"It's not too bad, the fireworks should be starting soon anyway."
On cue, there was the loud whine of one being shot off before there was a louder boom and an array of color filled the sky. You may or may not had jumped in surprise. Katakuri's body vibrated against yours as he laughed at you but his sounds were drowned out by the show. You scowled up at him but he was focused on the sky.
The colors from the fireworks lit up his face, what you could see of it anyway. They made his eyes look even warmer than they already were. He was an incredibly handsome man. You never took much notice before but he looked a lot younger than he actually was. His short cropped hair always seemed a little messy, untamable. Sharp eyes and a strong nose. If you could see his jaw you bet it was just as well formed.
He noticed you staring and bent down to your ear so you could understand him through the noise. "Need something?"
You shook your head. "I was uh, zoning?"
He pulled you more in front of him until you were backed into his chest, a hand resting on each of your shoulders. "I'm sure the fireworks are much more interesting than I am." He wasn't buying your lie. Totally caught you red handed ogling him.
You were burning with embarrassment for the remainder of the show but focused on it anyway. At the same time, Katakuri was able to watch your face from his angle. You refused to look up at him so it was impossible to notice. The lack of light made it hard to properly make out every detail but he already knew how beautiful you were. He watched the curve of your lips as you smiled and the bit of color from the fireworks light up your (s/c) skin.
When you first married Katakuri, he planned on keeping a comfortable distance from you. But you were stubborn. Despite his normally intimidating features, you boldly attempted to create some sort of relationship with him. Even if it never evolved into something intimate, you still wanted to have something with him so the both of you could at least live comfortably together.
At first he found your attitude annoying but it was growing on him. Especially as he found out more about your past. Momma was never the best parent, but she took care of her kids and let them enjoy their lives. He never thought he'd meet someone with so little control over what happened to them. And though it frustrated him, he couldn't deny he was happy to help you discover all that you were free to do now.
"Hey Katakuri." You leaned you head back against his chest, looking up at him.
"Hmmm?"
"The fireworks are done."
"Right, time to head home?" He blinked a couple times, just now realizing how lost in thought he was.
"Sure." You smiled up at him tiredly. "I think I'm actually tired for once."
"Good. We have work tomorrow."
You hummed in response, fighting the urge to yawn.
His hand traveled down your arm until it reached yours, holding it firmly. "Let's go then."
You followed him back down the hill to the car. "Hey Katakuri?"
"Yes?" He opened the passenger side door, letting you slide into the seat.
"Thanks for this weekend. It's been.....a nice change of pace."
"Yeah, it has." He was bent down to talk to you. "I think we both needed it."
You nodded and he closed the door, taking a couple seconds before sliding in to the driver's side. "We should do this more often. He suggested.
"I'd like that." You murmured, the car heater and the exhaustion from the day's events slowly lulling you to sleep.
