Chapter Five

Arthur spent all of the next day at the library looking for answers about the mysterious rose that suddenly appeared on his back. So far, he'd pulled up pages and pages of people getting drunk and waking up with tattoos. Nothing as peculiar as the rose. He felt rather silly doing what he was about to do. He walked over to the supernatural area that had books of all sorts out about vampires and werewolves and other creepy creatures. He quickly thumbed through a book about werewolves and found nothing. Then a book about fairies. Nothing. Finally, he came across a fading old book about vampires. He thumbed through and saw the mark of a vampire. He read that page, which said;

The Mark of the Vampire shows an object of love for a vampire. It will appear in discreet spots on the lover, and a matching one will appear on the arms or legs of the vampire. It appears as if the lover and vampire feel a burn when it first forms, right after when they first meet, then it becomes something only they can see, and will just appear as a scar to anyone else who isn't a supernatural being. They often take the form of a heart, a rose, a moon, or a star.
If either one of the lovers die, be they human or vampire, or some other being, the mark will fade from the living one, but they will feel empty for all of eternity. The mark shows the vampire's one and only love. Some folklore suggests that the lovers are able to 'communicate in a sense' with out seeing each other. They can usually tell where the other is, and will always feel their presence, which is generally a comforting, happy presence. It should also be noted that sometimes, a mark will appear in the same form on one person, but once they are deceased, the mark will fade until the lovers met again, rebirth, or otherwise.

Arthur scoffed as he closed the book. He had believed in fairy tales when he was a child, but to even consider that he was the "lover of a vampire" was ridiculous! But...it did say it felt like a burn at first...and it did take the form of a rose. He shook his head. He wasn't a vampire's lover. He couldn't be! He had barely even met anyone in this new city! How could he even meet a vampire?! They didn't exist!
Suddenly, his thoughts drifted back to the serial killer he heard about. "He bites their necks..." Is what Matthew had said. As if the killer were a...vampire. Arthur went pale. And what about the alluring and mysterious man he had met just yesterday? He was incredibly pale. He never opened his mouth. Quickly, Arthur smacked himself. He was over thinking this. Vampires don't exist. They don't exist. He turned to leave, and crashed into another man. In fact, it was the same man he crashed into yesterday. "Ack! I'm sorry!" He blushed slightly, "I suppose every time we encounter each other we're gonna hit each other?" He chuckled, as did the man.
"So, are you ready to tell me your name?" Arthur asked. The man simply shook his head. His blonde hair was slightly damp from the rain. "Well why not?" The pale man simply raised his finger to his lips again. "It's a secret?" He nodded. Arthur sighed.
"Are you always this cryptic? Or is it just to me?" The pale man pointed at him and shook his head. So he's always cryptic. "Would you like to get a coffee or something? It's my way of saying sorry for running into you, quite litterally..." Arthur asked, putting away the odd old book. He looked at the man, who nodded. Then he raised his hand over his head. "Umbrella? But why? It's sunny now!" The man's eyes filled with fear.
"Alright, alright! Chill! I've got an umbrella right here," Arthur said and handed it to the strange man. 'Well, he is rather pale. Maybe that's why he hates the sun?' "Vampires burn in the sun..." Was what the book had said in another chapter. Arthur shook the thought from his head and simply walked outside with the strange man who decided to wear long sleeves and carry an umbrella. The long sleeves Arthur could understand, but why did he need his umbrella? There were many things he wished to find out about his alluring companion.
