In And Out (Your POV)

It has been five days since you landed in Syria. You are a part of the doctors without borders. One of the better moments in your life. You are doing the rounds.

"Hello Armed," You greet one of your patients. He is a ten-year-old boy who was brought in after his village was attacked.

"Hello (Y/N)," the boy emeditaly cheers up. You wish you could do more to help and it breaks your heart.

"How is the arm?" You start to carefully peel the bandage off his arm.

"It's better," Armed replies. You finish taking the dressing off and you are satisfied with his healing.

"That's good but we will have to keep the dressing on," you respond.

"Have you found my mum yet?" The boy asks which only makes the heartbreak worse

"Not yet. Can I get Armed's arm redressed," you ask the nurse who has just walked past you.

"But we will," You try your best to sound optimistic. Luckily for you, optimism is one of your strengths. You get up to help the girl next to Armed but you are stopped.

"(Y/N) you're needed at the front door," Two minutes later you have made it to the makeshift ED. There is a flood of wounded patients. The funny thing is a new doctor was supposed to join you. You spot the worst injured patient. You head over to her. She has a massive piece of shrapnel in her face. You start assessing her.

"I'm going to need some help," You call out to whoever is listening to you. A man approaches you.

"What can I do for you?" He asks.

"I need you to clamp down the skin with your hands and make sure you hold with enough pressure," You instruct. He quickly gets a pair of gloves on and he does as you say. You carefully remove the object. Luckily the pressure that the man is putting on the wound is preventing it from bleeding further.

"I'm going to need a suture kit,"

"Here," a nurse hands you one. Ten minutes later you have everything cleaned up as well as you can without a proper ED.

"How did you know me applying pressure would work?" I'm Jude Silva by the way," You can tell he is surprised.

"(Y/N) and I didn't know it would work. You don't know if anything will work here I'm afraid," You are trying to sound hopeful but it's hard. Jude can tell.

"The lack of good infrastructure. It's bothering you isn't it?" Jude asks because he cares.

"Yes it is and what makes it worse is the fact that a war is going on around us," You respond

"And thank god an army surgeon joined us," Jude flashes a smile at you. At least he understands where you are coming from with that remark.

A year later you are finished your time in Syria. Your alarm goes off which can only mean one thing. Another slow day at Chastain Park Memorial. Forty minutes later you have arrived.

"Irving do you have anything you can pass off to me?" You ask because you want to start work as soon as possible.

"Yes trauma 2 needs a consult," Irving replies as he passes you a tablet. Thirty seconds later you have made it to the room and you almost drop the tablet in surprise. It's the one person you thought you would never see again

"Jude?"

"(Y/N) can you have a look at this rash please?" Jude asks.

"And yes I work here," You bend down to get a closer look at the rash.

"You just needed an excuse to see me because our patient is having an allergic reaction," You remark. You are frustrated but at the same time, you are happy. You update the chart.

"The reason why I want your help is because I don't believe it's a clear cut allergie,"

"Did you order a full blood workup," you ask as you stop the man from itching.

"That was the first thing I did," Jude explains. You spot a strange mark on his hand. You recognise it as a spider bite.

"Sir, were you bitten by a spider by any chance?" You ask as you take his hand and have a closer look.

"I was but it was a harmless one," The patient looks at you. You smile.

"It wasn't because it turns out you are allergic to the venom," You update his chart again.

"Nurse, can you get me an epi-pen please?" Three minutes later you are finished with the patient. You are reading the next patient's chart. You don't get far.

"I should have told you I work at Chastain," Jude remarks as he leans on the empty nurse's desk. You don't care because you are overwhelmed with happiness. At least you are reunited.

"We should get a drink after this shift," you suggest. You feel like you will regret suggesting a drink.

"That sounds good," Jude responds.
