Chapter 17: A Heavy Silence
The hospital room was shrouded in a painful silence. Everyone had been there for hours, hearts weighed down by the devastating news. The Jeon and Park families had shared looks of sorrow, but no one could find the words to express the grief they were feeling. The air was thick with sadness, and all anyone could do was sit in the uncomfortable stillness, trying to process the loss.
As the hours passed, Jimin’s parents and Jungkook’s family reluctantly decided to return home for the night. There was little they could do now, and the waiting was unbearable. Jimin was still unconscious, unaware of the tragedy that had unfolded.
Mrs. Park gently touched Jungkook's shoulder, her eyes filled with worry and love for both her son and her son-in-law. "We'll be back in the morning," she whispered softly. "Take care of him, Jungkook."
Jungkook nodded, his throat too tight to speak. He watched as they slowly left, his heart feeling heavier with each step they took away. Once the door clicked shut behind them, the room felt even quieter. Too quiet.
Jungkook sat at Jimin’s bedside, his hand tightly gripping Jimin's. His chest ached with the weight of what he had to tell him. His mind raced with a thousand thoughts, but none of them could bring him any comfort. He wiped his face, which was still damp with tears, and stared at the love of his life—so peaceful, so unaware.
How am I supposed to tell him? Jungkook thought, his heart breaking all over again.
He didn’t want to hurt Jimin. How could he tell him that their child was gone? That the future they had dreamed of, the family they had planned, had been torn away in an instant? And worse, how could he tell Jimin that they wouldn’t be able to have more children? It felt cruel. Unfair.
Jungkook swallowed hard, fighting the urge to cry again. He had cried so much already, but the pain didn’t lessen. It just grew, sharper and more unbearable.
He looked at Jimin’s peaceful face, wondering how he would react when he woke up. Would he cry? Would he break down? Or would he be strong, even though Jungkook knew this would shatter him?
He squeezed Jimin’s hand gently. “I’m so sorry, Jimin,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “I couldn’t protect you… or our baby. I should have been there. I should have stopped you from overworking yourself.”
Jungkook leaned forward, pressing his forehead against Jimin’s hand, unable to hold back the sobs that shook his body. The guilt weighed heavily on him. He blamed himself for what had happened. He had promised to protect Jimin, to take care of him—and yet here they were, with their lives torn apart.
Hours passed, but Jungkook couldn’t bring himself to leave Jimin’s side. He stayed there, waiting for any sign of movement, dreading the moment when Jimin would open his eyes and he would have to break his heart. The thought of seeing the pain in Jimin’s eyes made Jungkook feel like he was suffocating.
Outside, the world continued on, indifferent to their suffering. But inside that room, time seemed to stand still. All that existed was Jungkook’s overwhelming grief and the uncertainty of what lay ahead.
Jungkook didn’t know how they were going to get through this. All he knew was that he had to be there for Jimin. No matter how broken he felt inside, he had to be strong for the man he loved.
But how could he be strong when his own heart was in pieces?
