Miles Apart-The Cousins' POV
A/N: Hello again! Update! As you may have guessed, this is a POV between our two favorite adopted cousins, R.I.P. Sodex.
Sophie's POV is going to be first, and it will most likely be longer than Dex's by a lot, but that's to be expected.
Our little cinnamon roll just got tortured again.... Give him lots of love and TLC!
Ready, set, go!
What was Keefe doing here?
My stomach curled when his head lolled, and I looked over to Tam.
His head was turned towards me, and you could tell that he was doing his best not to even glance at the broken body beside us.
"Oh look. The backstabber got stabbed back."
"Tam!"
My voice lowered.
"What do you think happened?"
"They probably got so annoyed with him that they beat him up to shut him up. I don't know. I've never betrayed anyone. Twice."
Tam snorted.
"We can't even trust him to stay a traitor."
I stayed silent for a bit, seeing as it really wouldn't help Tam.
His face was twisted up in a snarl, but from here, I could see the hurt in his eyes.
"Tam, do you think he's even alive?"
I stared hard at Keefe, watching for any breathing.
A long 30 seconds passed, but I managed to see his chest rise and fall twice.
But barely.
"He's alive."
Tam stared hard at Keefe, twisting in his binds to see the bashed and tattered Keefe.
"Should we see if he's awake?"
"Hey! Keefe! Having a bad hair day I see!"
"Tam!"
"What?! It's almost guaranteed that he's going to wake up."
"But yelling at him?"
Tam shrugged and yelled at Keefe for another minute or two, but I could tell that he was careful to not let his voice carry too far.
We didn't want the Neverseen to realize that we were awake.
As Tam was throwing his jabs at Keefe, I laid my head back, trying to come up with a way out of the mess we were in.
Or a reason why we were in the mess in the first place.
When I couldn't come up with anything, I turned to Tam, seeing Keefe out of the corner in my eye.
He had a lot of bleeding slashes on his face, a swollen eye, split lip, and his arm was hanging at an angle that didn't look normal.
Jerkin torn and shredded, I was able to see his exposed collarbone, and there was a red, angry welt on his skin, with some deep, scarred flesh next to it, looking vaguely like elvin runes.
It looked vaguely familiar, and I squinted to see it, ignoring my flaming cheeks now.
"Tam? What's that on Keefe's chest?"
He looked over, his cheeks pink from his quiet rant, and narrowed his eyes.
Then, he paled, eyes widening, mouth moving but nothing came out.
"What is it Tam?!"
His eyes closed, and Tam turned his face away from Keefe, looking down at the floor.
"Sophie, I'm so sorry. It shouldn't be like this. I don't know how or why it got there. It's probably just some trick by the Neverseen....."
"TAM! What does it say?! What made those marks on Keefe?! You're scaring me!"
He closed his eyes, and then stared directly into my eyes, his silver-blue irises shining with regret and worry.
My breath hitched in my throat, and I suddenly got a cold, sinking feeling in my core, and I was terrified for Tam's answer.
"Sophie......It's a brand. A family crest's symbol is on Keefe's chest, and....It looks like yours..."
Gaping at Tam, I stared hard, in disbelief.
"And the wri-writing?"
"It said, 'Say goodbye to "That Boy".'"
I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the blaring alarms in my head, feeling all of my hope and trust fade away, and trying to shoo away the cold feeling that I wasn't going to get out of this one alive.
Trying to ignore the fact that only one person called Keefe, "That Boy."
Telling myself that I was loved by my adoptive parents, that they chose me, even though they almost didn't.
Telling myself that it was just a ploy by the Neverseen to attack me at my weakest.
Half-believing myself.
But the other half knew that in my heart, I knew the truth.
No.
Plenty of people know that Grady calls Keefe, "That Boy."
He's said it so many times.
And Grady is always around me.
He would NEVER betray me for the Neverseen.
He HATES the Neverseen.
But what if that was all a ploy?
I closed my brain to all sorts of thoughts and just focused on the pain, because that was something I was used to.
I just couldn't handle the thought that Grady betrayed the Black Swan, and me.
That my second family was now broken.
Because of me.

"Dad? Is Sophie here yet? Or Linh or Biana?"
My dad looked at me sorrowfully, shaking his head.
"I just called everyone... Only Linh picked up. Biana and Sophie didn't pick up."
Then, his Imparter started to chime, and my dad walked out of the room, just out of earshot.
He came back soon though, looking slightly nervous.
"That was Biana. And Sandor."
"Biana is on her way, but Sandor...."
A look of concern crossed his face.
"You didn't know this, but Sandor took a day off. Sophie insisted. He came back. And Havenfield is empty."
I blinked.
Empty? What does that even mean?
I verbalized my thought process, and my dad sighed, running his hands through his hair.
"It means that Sophie isn't there. And Sandor doesn't know where she is. Her trail just stops in the middle of Havenfield. And we know that Keefe and Tam were with her. Their scents were with Sophie's, and they disappeared around the same place."
I gasped, a memory surfacing to my mind.
"Dad! Sophie asked me if I could make something with her. Maybe she asked Keefe and Tam for help."
Slowly, my dad nodded his head, and thanked me for my help.
"We're going to need all the help and clues we can get. I think the Neverseen have something to do with this, and if Sophie is in their grasp, they're not going to give her up without a fight. Preferably a long, bloody, casualty-filled battle, but that's for another time. I want you to talk to your friends Dex. The ones we still have...."
With that, my dad turned away, pulling out his Imparter.
Before I could say anything though, the door flung open, and Linh came rushing in.
"Dex! What happened?!"
She threw her arms around me, and I grew warm, but hugged her back, wincing from the pain.
She pulled away from me, eyes searching my face, filled with hurt and worry.
"You look okay. At least your face. What happened?"
I explained to her what happened, and her face grew ashen.
In the middle of my retelling, Biana came in, and I filled her in on what happened.
"Dex. I'm so sorry. We'll find them. But, was Fitz with Sophie, Keefe, and Tam? I haven't seen or heard from him all day."
I shook my head, grimacing at the pain the action brought.
"Dex. Biana. Linh."
My dad came trudging back in, tears filling his eyes, and he stumbled, wiping his eyes.
He looked directly at Biana, then me.
"Dex, it seems you got the better deal...."
"Biana, I'm so sorry, but I think you're going to want to go home. They found Fitz."
"He's-he's not breathing anymore. There was a lot of blood.... I'm so sorry."
I heard Biana draw in a gasp, and felt Linh pull her to us.
My dad looked up at me.
"They left a note. 'Cooperation is the key to survival.'"
I felt the bottom fall out from under me.
"What did I do Dad?"
A/N: My, my, my. I had forgotten about Fitz. (Feeling better Fitz haters?) I guess that gets rid of one side of the love square/pentagon, right???............. :/
