Recap:
"Who are you?" I demanded
"Have you not worked it out yet smart girl?" He asked
The chair turned around, not making a single noise
"I am Kronos"
The room was dead silent as we took that news in. Kronos, ex-dead, ex-king and Percy's grandfather.
I looked over at man in front of me. His hair was jet black, just like Percy's, little touches of white coming through. His eyes were gold, not like the warm gold of Hazel's eyes, but the cold and power hungry gold of Luke's. He had the same nose as Percy, and the same chin and cheek bones of Percy's uncle King Hades. He had a smirk on his face, directed at his grandson.
I looked over at Percy. His jaw was dropped, eyes wide and face white as a sheet.
"Looks like my grandson is surprised to see me" Kronos chuckled.
Percy abruptly stood up from his chair, making a screeching noise as it slid across the cold floor. He slammed his fist on the table and stared directly in Kronos' eyes.
"I am not your grandson"
Kronos chuckled again and shook his head. "Our blood says otherwise"
"No, no," Percy shook his head. "Being genetically related doesn't make you family. Love, support, trust, sacrifice, honesty, protection, acceptance, security, respect and loyalty is what makes you family" He spat out.
Kronos raised his eyebrows. "Did I not give that to your father before I left?"
"I don't understand," I muttered, the shock wearing off. "You died it battle"
"Did I?" He turned his eyes towards me and I suddenly wished I hadn't talked. I never want to look into those eyes again. "Or did I run away?
"Yeah" Percy scoffed. "Like the coward you are"
Kronos place both of his hands on the desk. "I think you're forgetting what situation you are in Percy"
"And what is that?"
"You have no idea where you are or what you are doing. You have no plan, no way out. I'm your best bet on getting you out alive so I would suggested keeping the sarcasm to a minimum"
Percy tensed his jaw but didn't say anything.
"Can you answer some our questions?" I asked sitting on the edge of my seat. "What happened to you? How did this happen? Where are we?"
Kronos leaned back into his chair. "During battle I ran and I hid. Why? Because I knew that the country didn't want me as their leader anymore, and I knew that I would be killed. So I ran and I've been hiding ever since. But when I court wind that my grandson was trying to find a wife, I knew it was the perfect moment to strike" He eyes looked over at Luke and Ethan, smiling slightly. "As for how, these two have been most helpful. Keeping me updated on everything and kidnapping the future Royal couple."
My hand curled into fists. "I'm not Queen"
"You're the best bet"
"And where are we?" Percy asked getting Kronos attention.
"A place that I like to call Tartarus" Kronos smirked and nodded towards Luke and Ethan. They both walked over and hand cuffed us again, pulling us up.
"What do you want from us?" I growled
But Kronos didn't answer, he continued on smirking.
"Did you know I killed my own father?" Kronos shrugged as if it was no big deal "Nothing will stop me from killing..."
"Your own grandson" I finished.
He flashed a cruel evil smile at me as if it pleased him thinking about killing his grandson
"What do you want then?" Percy exclaimed. "Why take me? Why-Why take Annabeth?"
Kronos raised his eyebrows. "She's for leverage"
Luke moved so fast I didn't even see the flash of silver before he had a knife pressed to my throat.
Percy lunged for Luke but was strongly held back by Ethan. The blade on my throat sent shills down my spine as the reality of it sunk in.
"Let her go!" Percy screamed "Let her go or I hope the gods are on your side because when I get my hands on you!" He struggled against Ethan's tight grip. "Let her go now!"
"You give me what I want or," Kronos' eyes glanced at the knife pressed against my throat. "I slit her throat"
"What do you want?" Percy growled.
"Well that's easy," Kronos leaned in closer. "Give me the crown"
"The crown?" Percy asked desperately eyeing the knife pressed against my throat. "You want to be king again?"
"That's exactly what I want. If you give that to me, she will live"
"I'm do not have the power to give you the country" Percy kept on struggling to get to me.
"You will soon have that power, and then that power will be handed to me"
"Don't do it Percy," I looked into his extremely worried sea green eyes. "Don't do it"
He looked at me desperately "He'll kill you"
I glared at Kronos. "Kill me if you must, but I will not bow to a King who wears a crown studded with jewels of every life he has ended"
Kronos tore his gaze from mine and looked up at Luke. There was silence for a moment before and then the cold of the knife left my throat.
Ethan and Luke pushed us out of the room. Before the doors closed Kronos talked "Start with the girl"
I struggled as Luke pushed me forward. "What does that mean?" I asked.
"What are you going to do to her?" Percy tried to lunge at Luke but Ethan pulled him back.
"You'll find out soon enough"
I got one last looked at Percy's worried face as he was pushed left and I was pushed right.
I heard Percy yelling at Ethan in the distance as I struggled against Luke.
"Is this who you really are?" I asked as we turned another corner. "Is this what you want?"
"Stop talking"
"What happened to the boy I met in the woods? What happened to family?"
"Annabeth" He growled pressing his gun into the middle of my back.
"What?" I asked innocently. "You know me. Curious and always wanting answers. I thought I knew you. My friend but," I shrugged. "Not anymore"
He didn't say anything but turned yet another corner.
"How did you even meet Kronos? What was your thought process when you decided 'Hey, lets go kidnap one of my closets friends. She'll love that!' I mean seriously Luke?"
Luke laughed his cold laugh. "Shut up or I'll kill you"
I laughed, mimicking him. "I don't think you'll be able to kill me Luke, and we both know Kronos wants me for his plan to become king, if you kill me, we both will be dead. Fun, isn't it?"
He pressed the gun harder into my back making me wince. "Stop trying to get into my head. It's not going to work Annie"
I stopped walking, catching Luke by surprise. He bumped into me and lost his hold on my hands. I could've ran, I could've escaped. But to where? I had no idea where I was, apart from the fact it was called Tartarus.
"You," I glared at Luke. "Don't get to call me Annie anymore"
He spun me around and pushed me forward, holding my arm and his gun.
I didn't say anything as we continued to walk for a few minutes. The walls and floor were going back to the same as my cell, the lights becoming further apart.
We paused at a dead end and Luke left me standing there as we walked up to the wall. He knocked and it swung open.
He pushed me into the darkness, the door slamming shut with a thud.
"Boss says to start with the girl, General"
There was a chuckled from the darkness. "Wonderful"
A torch was lit, light warming half the room. It was larger than my cell, but smaller than where we meet Kronos. I couldn't describe the smell, but I shivered from the cold. The walls were cobblestone again and as I looked around I noticed a weird twinkle on the opposite side of the room.
I squinted to try and see what it was but a ruffle from the darkness snatched my attention. A man walked out scary me slightly, but I did not show it.
He had grey eyes like stone, a smirk on his brutal face. His jet black hair was slicked-back, with light brown skin and a very muscular build. "Hello there Annabeth"
I glared at him. "Who are you?"
He raised his eyebrows. "My name is Atlas, but most people call me The General"
I tried to store a mental image on him in my brain to tell Percy later. We needed to know everything about everyone here in order to escape.
"What do you want with me?"
He nodded towards Luke. I felt Luke leave behind me, and I turned around to watch him leave. Before he left, he looked at me, with no sadness or regret in his gold eyes. The door slammed shut with a bang, that echoed around the room.
"Answer my question" I looked around the room "What do you want with me?"
"Ah" He walked towards me and put a hand on my shoulder that could easily snap a flag pole in half. I flinched. "The boss wants to show you what will happen if you don't follow his plan"
I scrunched my face together in defiance. "I will never follow his plan"
Atlas did not comment but pulled me towards the twinkle. He left me standing there, my hands behind my back, and walked over to the wall, out of light.
Light irrupted in the room from where he had just lit a torch and I gasped in horror at what I saw.
A man with pale skin knelt on the floor. He had crazy silver Einstein hair and when he looked up at me his pure silver eyes were showing extreme pain. He was wearing a blue janitors uniform his arms bent holding the twinkling substance. There seemed to be clouds in it, a vortex. It swirled creating a funnel that the man with silver eyes and hair was carrying. His forehead was drenched in sweat and I could now see his arms shaking. It looked like the sky.
I tried to rush forward to help the man, but Atlas held me back. "What are you doing to him? He needs help!"
"You wish to help him?" Atlas laughed.
I nodded furiously.
"Okay, go help him" Atlas unlocked my hand cuffs and before I could think that it was a trap I rushed forward.
"Let me help you" I said to the man.
"No" He grunted in pain. "Run. Run as fast as you can"
"Please, let me help you"
I heard Atla scoff behind me and then I felt his presence. He bent down and pushed me next to the man, placing my hands up to touch the cold sky.
"Bend down on one knee" Atlas ordered.
I had no idea what the hades was happening, so I followed his order. He bent my arms and then pulled the man out from underneath the sky.
The weight of the sky came crashing down on me. My limbs felt like they were on fire, my vision turning blurry from the amount of pain I was experiencing. I would have screamed if I could've opened my mouth.
The man struggled to the wall, leaning heavily against it and breathing loudly.
"What-" I struggled to get out the words. "What is happening?"
Atlas brutal face came into view. "You're holding the weight of the sky"
He back away and kicked the man hard on the side. The man grunted in extreme pain "That's what you get for not follow orders Iapetus" He spat.
My eyes closed in exhaustion and all I could hear was ringing. I had never felt pain like this before, I have never thought I would feel this pain. I was already thinking about wanting to pass out, or die, only after a few short moments of this torture. But then my thoughts went to the alternative. Let Percy hand over the crown to Kronos.
That was a massive no no. Last time Kronos was in power, he started 3 wars, killed thousands of people, let the caste system fall to styxs and almost made the country bankrupt. He could, and would not, be given that power again. It took years for the country to recover, it still is. Then again, I didn't want to die either just yet.
I could feel my throat tightening as I started to panic with the pain, I felt like my lungs were suffocating me and the rest of my body was being burnt. This pain would be worth the peace of Illéa, and I would take this any day than rather see the country fall to its destruction.
As I knelt there, pain exceeding the scale of pain, I thought about how Luke could do this too me.
He promised me family and what do I get? Kidnapping, attempted murder, treason and so much pain that I could not describe properly.
What provoked this? How did it happen?
Kronos must be behind all of the Rebel attacks across the country. I thought back to when my family was in a car accident by someone smashing into their car deliberately. We thought it was a Rebel attack, and I was 100 per cent sure that it was. That meant Kronos had planned it, maybe Luke had known. Anger and hatred bubble inside me along with the pain. I momentarily forgot what situation I was in.
My bones felt like they were melting. I felt as if I was sinking lower and lower into the ground, the weight of the sky crushing me.
Percy. I thought. Where was he? Was he experiencing the same pain? Will he experience the same torture?
I lost count of how long I was kneeling there. A second felt like a minute, a minute felt like and an hour felt like a day. The man had been taken away by Atlas and I was alone in the room for awhile. He came back and was staring at me for the longest time, smirking at me as I struggled in pain.
When I saw Luke walk in that door, I felt hope swell inside me that he was going to take me back to the cell. That my pain would be taken away.
"I have to take her now"
The door opened behind Luke and Ethan walked in. But the person in front of him made me scream. Percy.
"No!" I screamed scary everyone in the room.
Luke looked away from me, Percy's eyes widening greatly in fear.
"Annabeth!" He rushed forward and Ethan let him. "Oh gods" He tried to move his hands from behind his back "What's happening?" He turned around and glared at the three boys "Help her! Let me help her!"
Ethan raised his eyebrows, waking over and unlocking Percy's handcuffs.
"No!" I cried "Don't-Don't. Go a-away"
"No no no no" Percy cupped my cheeks. "Tell me how to help"
I kept my mouth tightly shut. There was no way in hades was going to let Percy take on this willingly.
"Get into the same position as her" Atlas walked over and knelt in front of me, Percy mimicking me.
"Percy, please. Don't"
But before I could protest even more Atlas grabbed my arm and pulled me out from underneath the sky.
I screamed as the full force fell on Percy, but he only grunted in pain. I struggled to get back to him, to try and take some of the weight but Luke held me back.
Percy looked up at me and my heart broke from the pain shining in his eyes.
"Take her back to her cell" Atlas stood back up. "The Prince can stay here for awhile"
Kicking and screaming Luke tried to get me out of the room but before the door closed I managed to stick my head back into the room, staring at Percy "Stay strong"
And then Luke pulled me back into the hallway, the door closing in my face.
"Luke!" I screamed. He hadn't hand cuffed me so I took this opportunity to punch him with the very little strength and energy I could muster. He stood there for a few moments taking the hits but then restrained me easily, I was to tired to fight back.
"Luke?" I asked quietly, tears falling silently down my cheeks "Why? Why are you doing this to Percy? Why are you doing this to me?"
He didn't answer my question until he had uncuffed me and pushed me into my cell some ten minutes later. He slammed the bar door closed and looked down at me on the ground. "The world needs to change Annabeth. It can't go on the way it is. The One's and Two's, they forgot about the lower castes. They've forgotten us and left us to rot in hell. Kronos will change that, he will help us"
"I haven't forgotten you" I whispered quietly
"I know that," Luke smiled sadly at me. "But everyone else has"
I watched his retreating figure sadly wondering how I had never noticed it. I was so lucky to have lived my life in the palace that was safe. Luke had not had that, Thalia had not had that. But what made Luke turn against me, and Thalia not? Maybe Luke's hatred for his father came into play, or maybe he was easier to manipulate.
I slumped against the wall, trying to breathe steadily. I felt like I was flying, like I was free. But I was soon brought back down to earth when I realised that Percy was going through agony right now.
I rested my head on the wall, closing my eyes. Tears continually fell down my cheeks. The thought of Percy staying in my mind.
I lost track of time again when I heard noises from further down the hall. I shot up, ignoring my pain, and raced to the door.
A defeated Percy came into view, looking horrible. He was covered in sweat, face pale as he limped towards me. Still in pain, his eye lit up when they connected with mine.
"Back up Annabeth" Ethan nodded towards me.
"We're sharing a cell now?" I asked a little to hopeful.
Ethan nodded.
I eagerly backed up and Ethan unlocked the door, unfuffing Percy and pushing him towards me.
Percy stumbled and nearly fell, but I caught him and helped him to a wall. We both slid down it and hung onto each other desperately as we both silently cried for each other and for ourselves.
I didn't realise how much I missed his warmth until I was in his arms again. It was stupid, but all of my pain disappeared when Percy held me. It was if nothing could hurt me.
I pulled back from Percy after ages and cupped his cheek wiping a tear off his cheek. I looked at all his features and was caught off guard when I noticed his hair. A streak of his normally raven black hair had turned grey.
I brushed my fingers through it "Your hair..."
He looked up at me and brushed his fingers through my hair "Your hair..."
I brought a piece to the front of my face so I could see it, it was grey as well "From the weight. The stress" I said.
He smiled weakly at me. "We're matching"
I slumped into his embrace. "Yeah, we are"
