Chapter 2

As we enter the forest Nick takes my hand, my leg magically feeling better. The tall pines loomed above me, I felt like they were about to attack us. I gripped Nick's hand with my good hand. I look around and see multiple animals, all of them looking like they don't want to eat us. There's a family of deer, clumped together.  They were so beautiful like that, I wish I were a deer, they seem so peaceful. A chipmunk chatters as it climbs up a tree. It looks so fluffy. And it's so energetic. I smile, not knowing the forest could be so peaceful. I look up at Nick, who's just looking forward, not enjoying the scenery around us. I stop. "Nick, look at how beautiful this place is." I say, still looking around. The ground is soft under my feet. It's covered in needles from the tall trees. There are some pine cones on the ground as well. Small bushes poke and tear at my already ripped clothing. I laugh as a fox steps on a twig, scaring its food away. Although it's cute it's also very dark, even though it's the middle of the day. But the darkness is nice to my hurting eyes. I feel my shoulders relax for the first time since the bombings. I wince at the memories. My arm throbbing like it always does. "Charlie, we should keep moving, they could be following us in the shadows." Nick says and plunges deeper in the forest. I follow silently and keep looking at all the woodland creatures; the deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and the birds flying with the butterflies. I can hear wolves howling into the wind. I giggle but Nick immediately shushes me. I sigh and continue walking. "We should stay here for the night." Nick says after another half hour of walking. "Okay." And we sleep on the ground that night.

-AN- I'm not very happy with the ending but I couldn't think of any other ending. I hope you enjoyed it!
