An interesting day (Lilly)

It is one of the most mundane days you have experienced at the Toronto Western Hospital. You and your team are gathered in the rec room. Everyone's eyes are glued to the TV. it's because of the NHL playoffs. The Maple Leafs are against the Chicago Blackhawks. It looks like a rough game. A small cheer flows through the crowd of doctors.

"Nylander scores off a nice assist from Matthews," The commentator announces. You decide to do some rounds because you are a little bored of the game. A minute later you are checking on one of your patients who is also watching the game. You can't seem to shake the idea of the game.

"So Bill how are you feeling?" You ask as you quickly flick through his charts.

"That depends on if the blackhawks can win or not," He responds. You see him wince. You glance at the TV to see why. William has been knocked out and someone has clipped him with their skates. Two minutes later you have been summoned to the ED. It is an all hands on deck situation. Another tense minute later the paramedics have arrived. You get to work on seeing how bad his injuries actually are. You hear a moan from William. At least he is somewhat regaining consciousness. You double check the gash on his arm whilst one of the interns checks his concussion.

"We are going to have to operate," You announce. You make sure that the piece of gauze is secure.

"Despite the knock to his head there is little visible trauma," One of your colleagues remarks.

"Still I think a neuro consult would be a good idea," You respond. You gesture for them to get him prepped for surgery. You get the feeling it may be a long one after all the gash in his arm is deep. A minute later you are scrubbing in. You are thinking about the nature of the injury. You make a mental checklist of what you are going to do.

"Lilly, some of his teammates want answers. What should I tell them?" one of your first year interns asks.

"Tell them that we will try our best to fix the issue," you reply as you flick most of the water on your hands into the sink. Thirty seconds later you have made it into the OR. Everyone stops what they are doing and the people that have their back to you turn to face you.

"Name?" You start the process of making sure that everyone knows what you are doing. It will be a long one.

"William Nylander," everyone parrots back. A good start.

"We are repairing any damage we can, caused by a slice injury to the left arm, correct?" You ask.

"Correct," the team parrots back. You get to work. You are amazed that there was little damage to the bone. There is however a major tear in the muscle. After two hours of operating, you are finished. It wasn't as bad as you thought which is rare for a game like hockey.

"Simon, can you close for me?" You decide to let one of the interns do it because you are extremely tired. Plus it gives you an opportunity to talk to the team about William's injuries. You head to the waiting room to find the entire squad of Maple Leafs players. At least it will be good news even though it was a season ending injury.

"What's the deal Doc?" Mitch Marner asks.

"Well rehab is going to be a pain for William but he should be able to return for the next season," You explain to the entire team. Five restful hours later you are making sure that William is alright. He has been moved to the VIP area of the hospital. You hear another moan from his mouth. This time it is him waking up.

"So Doctor Morgan what's the deal?" William asks as he becomes more alert.

"I'm sorry but it is a season ending injury," You respond. He looks down at his arm. He looks like he regrets his injury. It is a look you see too often with sports players. You get the feeling that rehab will be a pain for the both of you. It has been a day since William's admittance. You are trying to distract yourself by seeing other patients. You know he will be fine but there is something about the way he looks at you. Your pager buzzes.

"Excuse me I have places to be," You feel bad for leaving prematurely. You write some notes on his chart as you leave. You double check your pager. You have been asked to check in on William. No matter how hard you try you can't avoid William. Two minutes later you are greeted by the neurologist outside of the room that William is staying at.

"What can I do for you James?" You ask. You get the feeling that he wants to talk about the head knock that brought William down.

"I've assessed William's head injury and I don't think there is much in the way of risk," James replies. You will still ask the nurses to keep an eye on him just in case.

"Thank you James," You decide to check on William. He looks like a lost puppy dog. It's a common look for people in his position.

"Hello Doc," It doesn't take long for him to notice you. He cheers up a bit.

"Hello William. You know you are going to have to stop feeling sorry for yourself and start rehab," You remark as you check his chart. You decide to check his wound and change his dressing. You gesture for a nurse to get you the stuff you need. You are careful as you peel the bandage off. William flinches at the site of the wound. At least it is looking slightly better than it was yesterday. The nurse comes in with a tray of supplies. You get to work on making sure the bandage is tight but comfortable.

"How does it feel?"

"It's all good," He responds. You update his charts and you leave. A minute later you have made it to the break room. You are getting a cup of tea sorted. You are soon joined by one of your interns.

"Hey Lilly how is William doing?" He asks as he pours himself some coffee. You really can not get rid of your thoughts about William. It is bothering you but hopefully the intern doesn't notice.

"He will be fine," You respond. You check your watch to see if you are nearing the end of your shift. You are lucky because you only have one hour before your shift ends and the last thirty minutes are going to be spent starting on William's rehab. Hopefully there will be no emergencies between now and then.
