The Empty Bed
A/N Happy 10th chapter! Enjoy!
Btw, pretend the girl in the drawing is Eris, not Rosie😅^^^^^^^
3rd Person POV
John wiped his forehead of sweat as he got up from kneeling on the floor and dropped the tools in his hands. He looked over at Sherlock who had rolled up his shirt sleeves to help build the bed for Eris's room, John felt himself begin to stare and shook his head to clear it. "I finished my part, how about you?"
"Done." Sherlock responded simply and got up as well. They had decided to give Eris John's old bedroom after consulting Mrs.Hudson who instantly fell in love with the little girl. Right now the child sat in the living room, playing with building blocks they'd bought earlier that day. She appeared to have made a rough replica of Buckingham Palace by the time they finished their task and was pretending her old stuffed dog, that she still treasured over the new toys, was the queen.
"Eris, come look at your new room." John called. Eris looked up and joined her parents.
The walls had been painted sea green like the dress they'd found her in, a pink flower-shaped nightlight hung from the wall and a tree shaped bookshelf was nailed to a corner of the room. Various toys had been arranged here and there including multiple mystery puzzles, a doll house, a train set, and several boxes of LEGOS. Her bed was made of honey-colored wood and was set up with colorful floral bed sheets and stuffed animals of every variety. A fabric chandelier lit up the room from the center.
Eris gasped and ran all over the place curiously. John laughed and leaned against Sherlock in exhaustion, his shoulder hurt from all the manual work and it was around four in the morning.
On her second time around Sherlock scooped up Eris and placed her on the bed, handing her the new polka-dot pajamas they had picked out. "You change and go to bed, alright Eris? It's late." He explained and the little girl nodded.
She waved for them to come closer, so they leaned down and she kissed them both on the cheek "Goonight Papa. Goonight Doda."
"Goodnight." Sherlock responded, ruffling her curly hair and John kissed her on the forehead.
"Goodnight, sweetheart."
Then the two left, turning off the light but leaving the door open in case Eris was afraid of the dark. She smiled at them then walked behind the Chinese screen to change.

In their bedroom Sherlock and John changed into their pajamas and collapsed, exhausted onto their bed. "Children take up so much energy." John groaned and snuggled close to Sherlock, who wrapped an arm around him but didn't respond.
John looked up and saw Sherlock lost in thought, his eyes flicking this way and that. The doctor watched him, looking at the focus in his expression, the set of his mouth, the light highlighting the curve of his cheekbones. There was no denying Sherlock's obvious visual appeal, he was beautiful.
But to John, the thing that had drawn him to Sherlock was the promise of an interesting time, someone he could listen to for hours, it was the thrill of something dangerous that worked like a magnet.
"-John?" He shook out of his trance and saw Sherlock looking at him oddly. "What wrong?"
John shook his head and reached up to play with Sherlock's mop of hair "It's nothing, what were you thinking about? The missing family?" He asked, dismissing Sherlock's concern.
The detective didn't press, instead he leaned into John's touch and closed his eyes. "There isn't much to go on in this case. It's very vague, even The Hounds of Baskerville had more of a trail to follow."
John smiled "When did you start using my blog titles?"
"When you started calling me 'yours' in them." Sherlock responded with a smirk.
John blushed "I started doing that?" Sherlock nodded and John buried his face in Sherlock's chest, embarrassed.
Resting his head on John's, Sherlock drifted back into thought. About Eris and how she was a permanent addition to their family now, bringing with her a storm of the unknown. He thought about the case and all its mystery, something he loved and lived for.
But something about this particular case was strange. It stirred up a familiar feeling within him that he couldn't quite recognize. It was still the usual excitement and infatuation he felt when he got a case but it was like an old enemy was creeping up on him.
Eventually Sherlock was lulled to sleep by the steady beat of John's heart. He liked knowing John was near and safe, it was the only thing he wanted for the people he cared about. But for the longest time he thought that meant pushing everyone away because he brought all the danger.
But then John came along and danger was what the retired army doctor was looking for. He didn't mind going on extremely dangerous cases with Sherlock like when Moriarty first made himself known. Sometimes Sherlock still had nightmares about all the guns pointed at John and the huge bomb that was strapped to his chest.
Eris snuck into the room and saw her dads sleeping deeply on the bed and she smiled. They were very different from her past guardians and their relationship was a lot kinder than Eris was used to.
Quietly, she climbed onto the bed and lay down, falling a sleep in less than a minute. And there they all stayed until morning, Eris's bed untouched in the glossy new room.

"Wakey wakey brother," said a familiar sing-song voice. Sherlock groaned and sat up on the bed, John stirring beside him and Eris sitting silently on the cover, watching something at the foot of the bed with great interest.
"Why is it," Sherlock said, annoyed, "that my siblings must always visit in the ungodly hours of the morning?"
Eurus Holmes smirked at her little brother, "Because it's funny seeing you so disheveled. And I'm not sure 10:30 counts as ungodly, Sherlock."
John sat up as well and squinted his eyes, "Hello Eurus, are you here to put another grenade in the flat?" He said bitterly. There were still scorch marks on the walls in some places and it didn't appease the doctor's taste in design.
"Oh come now future brother-in-law, are you still upset about that?" Eurus cooed, "I already said I was sorry."
Sherlock sighed and got up, walking to his bedside table and picking up the file from the day before. He began to read it again, "What do you want, Eurus? I'm quite busy and I don't have time for another hour of you judging my violin playing."
Eurus let out a quick laugh, swaying from one foot to the other like a child in her medical gown. She tucked a strand of black hair behind her ear and smiled. "Mycroft told me I have a niece. Is it true, Sherlock? Did you hide her from me?"
Sherlock didn't look up from the file, "I didn't tell anyone, actually. But yes, it's true." He answered dismissively.
His sister's face suddenly switched to an unreadable expression, flat like a dolls, "Really?"
Eris waved an arm, catching the woman's attention, "Hi Aunnie!" She said happily.
"Aunnie?"
"She means 'Auntie'." John explained, tense with Eris so close to the woman who nearly killed him and emotionally wrecked Sherlock for life. He wasn't inexperienced in the world of complicated older sisters but at least Harry didn't kill his childhood friends. At least.
Eurus and Eris regarded each other for a few seconds. Finally, Eurus smiled in a way that made even Sherlock, who had looked away from the papers when he felt the change in the air, uneasy. She reached out and touched Eris's face slightly with the tips of her fingers, her eyes inhabiting a maniacal fire.
"Hello, dear." Eurus whispered, "We're going to have so much fun, you and I." Then she giggled and Eris shrunk back a bit. It was the laugh of someone insane.
Of someone dangerous.
A/N YO I'm not dead!!!!!
Yet!!!!!!
So, I'm sorry I've been gone for a while but I swear I'm trying 😢😅. I've decided to hold off the second part of the Eris and Human Error chapter until I introduce a new character, which might take a while, but I swear it's coming!
Anywhooooo, I'm going to go write more, then read, then try to sleep but instead be murdered by constant insomnia🤗
DON'T DIE!
