Monday PM.
I am home, and am famished. I think about ordering some food, but realize I am low on funds. At least, after this weekend, I should be able to order in, but tonight, I have to eat what I have lying around. I open my fridge and realize that I only have some seltzer and grapes; a meal this does not make.
A quick trip to the grocery store shouldn't be too expensive, so I pull my shoes on again, and head out the door.
I am perusing the aisles at the grocery store, when I do a double take. I see the girl that I slammed into earlier that day. It's unusual to see the same person in a city as big as this, but she is unmistakable. She is holding someone's hand that I can't see as they're blocked by the shelves in the aisle. I assume it's the good-looking guy from earlier. I keep walking; just surprised I have seen the same person in two completely different neighborhoods in the same day.
I grab a couple of items—a salad, some eggs, and a pint of ice cream, and then head to the check out. When I get there, I nearly drop everything on the floor. It is not the good-looking guy from earlier. It is him. He is here with her. I feel my face get warm; neither one of them has noticed me. I doubt she would even register who I am, but he definitely would.
I hold onto my groceries and pray to myself that he won't turn around, and he'll just keep his face forward until they leave, while at the same time wonder who she is, and why she's with him, holding hands for that matter. Is it his girlfriend? Who was that other guy? I have a thousand questions running through my head so, I am distracted. It isn't until the person behind me rudely nudges me that I snap out of it.
"They called you up," the voice behind me says gruffly.
I glance backwards with an apologetic look, mouth "Sorry," before putting my groceries on the line at the register.
No such luck. The whole thing has created a small scene, and he is now staring at me with a look of awe and uneasiness, probably wracked with the same feelings that are flooding me right now. I look away fast, but still feel his eyes on me. I glance back up, but he's grabbing their bag of groceries. He looks back at me before he walks out, and nods. The girl he is with doesn't seem to notice, as she is already almost out the door.
Once they have left, and I am still waiting to pay, I feel my body relax. I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket, but don't have the hands to check it, as I am now carrying the bag of groceries and again, fumbling with my wallet.
I walk out the door and towards my apartment. Once I am able to set the bag on my arm, and have my wallet secure, I pull my phone out. I expect the message to be from Matt maybe, or Trixie, but it's from him.
"That was unexpected," it reads.
He's got that right. But, I really don't know how to respond. Is he happy that he saw me? Upset? Indifferent?
All I can think of as a response is, "Yeah, for sure."
I don't get any other response back, which furthers my questions of what he thought of that encounter. I try to push all these thoughts out of my head as I walk back to my apartment.
