The Decision and Aftermath; MAJORLY Difficult
He picked up a hat to finally ready to reveal his intentions of which powerhouse he'd commit and for one Jayson Christian Butler, he felt a huge monkey lifted off his back.
Jayson: I, Jayson Christian Butler, the 28th overall prospect and 5th overall Wide Receiver Prospect in the Class of 2020 hereby annouce my commitment to further my education and athletic career at... The University of Michigan! Ann Arbor, stand up Loud and Proud!
He placed the Maize snapback complete with the insignia instead of the classic and bold fonted LSU word marked snapback on top his short dreadlock fade as students erupted in cheers as cameras began snapping photos of him putting up an with his fingers and playing their fight song as the senior began taking questions.
Fox Sports Reporter: Jayson, your older brother has a well-known history at LSU, bringing them a National Championship in emergency relief. Was your decision solely based on wanting to carve out your own legacy at his alma mater or were you seriously considering the Wolverines from the start?
Jayson: I guess you can say Michigan was always on my mind. After getting a call from Coach Harbaugh and visiting the city as well getting some of the cooking up there, I fell in love with it all. The history of the program, the facilities and just being able to step into The Big House, I just envisioned the screaming of all the fans on Saturday afternoons and nights, who wouldn't want that? Plus Coach Harbaugh has got something special going on with that program. People tend to forget he led one of the most underrated and most balanced to a Super Bowl appearance. All I really needed was an opportunity, lo and behold, I got a scholarship and that's all it took. It just helps that my brother helped get the ball rolling. Plus the facilities were an added bonus.
He fist bumped his brother as a young woman affiliated with a local Dallas news station who appeared to be in her late twenties had a recorder and notepad in hand.
Reporter: Hannah Battah, Fox 4 KDFW. First off, congratulations on your commitment.
Jayson: Thank you, Hannah.
Reporter: You're very welcome, I actually noticed we have a celebrity on our hands in professional wrestler Alexa Bliss along with her parents; It's no secret she along with her family are diehard Buckeye fans, what do you think she's feeling now that Ohio State missed out on another potential superstar?
Jayson: Umm.... I feel like Alexis, would've definitely stuck to her roots and boo my teammates, but she wouldn't be that ruthless.... would you?
Alexis took a microphone as she began to respond.
Alexis: Well, I can't sit here and lie to you all. I'm supremely happy Jayson is finally committed, I can't wait to see what he accomplishes. One of the other four colleges would've been awesome instead of Michigan however. Man, I feel like I need to bite my tongue just by saying that one word.
Jayson: There you have it guys; Alexis will always be a Buckeye Babe to the bitter end; I've got some mouthwash if you're privy to it.
Everyone shared a hearty laugh as Jayson pointed to someone in the far back.
ESPN Reporter: Now that you're committed to the Wolverines Jayson, how do you think things will shake out for you on the depth chart and what type of player is Jim Harbaugh getting?
Jayson thought about what he was going to say as he thought about the recruiting class his new home had garnered long before made his decision not even four minutes ago.
Jayson: Wow eh, such a loaded question but I guess I can answer both ends. First of all, I understand that they have such an elite receiver class. But those players I assume are going to be in front of me in terms of playing time have to understand. The number of recruits that their class they have going? I'm going to give them hell, pardon my French, in a effort to work my way up. When you have guys like Mike Sainristil, Ronnie Bell, Roman Wilson and that lot of receivers of course I'm expected to be way down the chart. But hey, same thing happened when I was here at Allen and I think my resume speaks for itself. I'm ready to give it my all or fail trying. But for the second part, I want the fans and students of Michigan to know that their football team is getting an absolute dog on whatever side of the ball I play, I'm going to push my teammates to the absolute limit so that they are the best version of themselves come Saturday evening or afternoon. But don't think for a second I'm just going to be focused on the game aspect. I definitely plan on taking my studies seriously, both all my classes and whatever film study coach assigns us that particular day. I was, by my dad, God rest his soul, to outwork my competition but also be a tireless worker. That's the type of player in my most humble opinion that Coach Orgeron is grabbing from schools like Arizona, Oregon, Clemson and LSU. I think I have time for one more question before I must go back to classes, so any takers?
He pointed to a student who was with the school newspaper.
School Reporter: Have you decided what you'll be majoring in when you get to college?
Jayson: Man I tell you Hayley, I wish I was that prepared. I honestly feel like I got the hardest part out of the way. If I had to tell you what I'm feeling right now, it's a three way tie between majoring in education, business or something with sports like management or medicine. I guess I'll know once I get settled in.
He looked around to see if anyone else had a question and when no one else did, he was ready to confirm his commitment and get the process of being a college student started. As he was given the Letter of Intent, cameras came to life once more as Jayson Butler made it official; he was a Wolverine just like his late father had been before him. As soon as he got up, his phone began ringing profusely with the caller ID showing a familiar person.
Jayson: Coach O! Isn't this a surprise, how are you sir?
The distinct rough voice of the Michigan head coach started to come through clearly.
Jim Harbaugh: Jayson, I'm doing good son. Coach just shared the great news with me, you ready to put in the hard work and create your own legacy kiddo?
Jayson: Yessir Coach, it was tough but no doubt I feel I made the right decision. It really came down to you guys, LSU and Oregon but I have no regrets right now. I still have a few loose ends to tie up down here like graduation and finals but I'm all yours come late May.
Jim: Listen I'm not sweating it kid, any coach would be lucky to have your off the charts talent I'm just happy you committed to the right program. We're going to get you on the right path of not only being a future Michigan great and potential NFL star but a fine young man. Let's go win a national championship together!
Jayson: Damn straight, Coach. I'll see you down the road.
Jim: Alright kid, take care and send your family my best.
He hung up the phone as his mother ran over to him and began hugging him, crying tears of joy and pride as she peppered him with kisses.
Aaliyah: Have I ever told you how proud I am of you son?
Jayson: Only a thousand times this weeks mom. But thank you.
Chase came in as the reigning and defending champion delivered some light punchies onto his now Big Ten committed brother.
Chase: Look at you Jay! You're definitely not lying about committment day, it was by far the scariest day of my life but you? You handled that like a champ, my guy. Too proud of you little brother. Though I was kinda praying you'd commit to being a Bayou Bengal.
Jayson: Yeah, no it'd feel wrong to take over something you built my guy. Plus, it's just something about that damn winged helmet that titilates my competitive juices.
Chase: ....Never say titilate again man, okay?
Jayson: Nope, it suddenly just became my new favorite word.
Alexis: Just don't do too much damage playing my Buckeyes, okay Jayson?
Jayson: Damn Lexi, I wish I could I really wish.... but there's a reason I committed to play for Michigan. To play and win THE GAME. Gonna have to tell Coach to get his defense right, because I'm coming to destroy all those coverages he drawing up.
Alexis: Well just know, you're going to be the ONLY Wolverine I cheer for. I meant what I said, I'll still be ruthless towards your teammates, but I wish nothing but unparalleled success for you love.
She hugged him as he then received a hug from her mother and firm handshake from her father seemingly saying make their hometown team regret never giving him the time of day or chance.
Jayson: Well it was great getting all this love and support, but I should be probably get back to classes-
Chase: Nah kiddo, bump that. I actually convinced your teachers to let you have the day off, they also said your classes had no homework so we're holding a celebratory lunch for you.
Jayson: Boy ain't no way...
Chase: There are perks to being the sibling of a world champion; just don't abuse it fam. But I got some reserved seats for this nifty little breakfast spot that serves a mean stack of waffles. Consider this payment for all the times you were my personal ball boy, Jayson.
Jayson: There's a reason I wield a near 4.0 GPA.
Aaliyah: Because you know I'd clobber you if you received anything less than a C+?
Jayson: Nah- well yes... but mainly because I know a great offer when I see it and I'd be dumb not to take it. Come on lead the way, I can just see the boysenberry syrup drip, drip, DRIPPING ON MY WAFFLES!
Everyone left the stadium laughing as Jayson was now prepared and ready for that next major step in his life.
The next three months were essentially a blur for the senior. From celebrating Spring Break in Destin and Miami Beach with some of his closest friends, to taking ex Alyssa to prom for one last rodeo to smashing through the last of his finals getting A's on all of them except them with AP History being the real tripper as he gained a solid B on that but after being able to walk across the stage finally and receive his high school diploma to the cherry on top in witnessing the annual spring game for Michigan as Blue took on Maize, it was time to finally get the show on the road. Street name: Packing up for college. Outside of his dresser, bed frame and mattress, he had taped down the last of his Lowes packaging boxes which was titled 'Clothes and Shoes" when he received two swift knocks on the door, to see his mother and brother ready to go.
Chase: This the last of it, Jayson? My truck is just about stuff with all your things? Alexis would help, but-
Jayson: Yeah this is actually the last box of clothes and shoes. You can just put that in my trunk and totally understand with Lex, I mean she is carrying my future niece or nephew in her belly, she's obligated to take this type of thing off.
Aaliyah: It truly does not feel right both my babies are out of the house like this.
Jayson: Ahh, don't be like that momma bear you'll be seeing on winter break and a few days of spring break.
Aaliyah: Hopefully with a girlfriend?
Jayson: You just had to ruin it, didn't ya? ANYYYYWAY! Let's go to Ann Arbor... Greatness awaits!
END OF CHAPTER TWO! THERE YOU HAVE IT, JAYSON IS A MICHIGAN WOLVERINE, so any followers that are diehard Michigan fans, rejoice. It really came down to a process of elimination of Oregon, LSU and Michigan but ultimately the Big Ten powerhouse prevailed. SOOOO, while the college is unveiled, the love interest is still being kept under wraps but she will make a future appearance in coming chapters. I just wanted to rip the band-aid off of where ya boi is going to make his home at. Until then ciao bella everyone and I'll see you in the next update. I'll be working on The Heart of a Champion and Liv or Let Die for now.
