Chapter twelve: the viking with the fish
Small edit, made it slightly more interesting and fixed some logic issues: 22/06/2021
Striker's/Toothless' POV.
Hmm. I wonder.....
I'm cut out of my fascinating thoughts (I was examining a rock) when I see the Viking from earlier enter the Cove. Well, MY Cove I guess it is now. Not like I have any choice.
I notice as the viking comes closer that he has....food.
Fish? I smell fish!
I creep out from behind the rock and stalk towards the boy.
Maybe I can just grab it from him and lunge back before he notices? I have to stay on guard...
He spins and stares at me as I approach. He holds out some nice looking fish nervously.
No harm I guess....
I am about to snatch it when I see a glint from his fur.
No!
I shy back with a growl.
Its the shiny thing! How DARE he try to deceive me?!
He goes to touch it and I growl more. He winces, pulling his hand away.
Yeah, don't you even try!
He snatches it and holds it as far away from his body as possible. He drops it, who h surprises me, but I don't let my guard down. Instead, I gesture to the water with my head, glaring. He gets the message and picks it up with his foot, tossing it into the water. I watch it sink before I let myself become more calmer, and sit back, happy.
Much better.
I reach slwoly for the fish again, opening my mouth wide. This time I grab the fish, hearing the human say "Toothless? I could of sworn you had..." and trailing off. I reveal my teeth and get the fish down in two bites. "Teeth!" The boy gasps.
Hmm, yum. Any more?
I sniff him, pushing him up against the rock, but don't find any.
It is SO nice...but he's so small. Obviously the runt of the litter. He needs food I guess, I'll feel bad if I don't share.
I regurgitate half the fish and offer it to him, dropping it in his lap.
Eat up. You look like you need it! You're all skin and bones. Ok...now swallow. You don't know how? Has it been that long since your last meal?! Look, like this...yes, there ya go!
He does something with his mouth and I narrow my eyes. When you show your teeth it usually means aggression if you're a dragon, but his features are relaxed. And he's not a dragon.
I think its....joy?
I attempt to do that mouth thing too, I think I did okay.
When he reaches towards me with a hand I snarl and fly away to the best of my ability. No touchy.
I light the ground and curl up to sleep. A bird chirps and flies. I follow it with my sight to see the boy sitting next to me. He's still here? I groan and face away from him, moving to swing my tail around so that it covers my face from his view.
It's like he's obsessed with me. DRAW ME IN THE SAND AND IT'LL LAST LONGER!
Hiccup's POV.
After some time, Toothless sleeps, hanging upside down like a bat, and I haven't left this place. (Yep, I named him. It fits!)
It has been a few hours now, it's near sunset time.
Earlier, when he had first settled down, I'd reached to touch his tail, but he'd moved it up and caught me in the action, and then he moved to hang from a branch.
So now, I sit, drawing Toothless' head in the sand. I feel a big presence next to me. It's Toothless, obviously. I feel his presence leave, and a crash sound.
Toothless comes back over with a branch in his mouth. He then drags it along the sand, seemingly drawing. A hint of playfulness is hidden in his movements, like he's excited.
Whoa! Cool....
I stand up, looking around me. I can't tell what it is. Maybe if I go that way I can get a better look at it?
I step and Toothless growls. I immediately pull my foot away and he stops. I put it down and he growls. I look down to notice I'm treading on the line. Once more, I pull it off and then slowly put it down again, receiving a growl. He looks about ready to pounce.
I step on a bit of dirt where there is not a line or a smudge. Toothless doesn't growl and I smile knowingly.
I skillfully step over the lines, twisting and turning as I find my way out, to finally...reach Toothless, it seems.
I back away a little and offer my hand, Toothless backs off a bit and growls skeptically so I turn my head, waiting, and slowly extend my hand out.
I'm giving him a choice. He could either bite my hand off, or...not do that.
Time passes slowly, I try not to freak out too much. Out of nowhere, a warm, yet smooth surface, presses into my palm. I look to see Toothless with his nose in my hand.
Whoa! Incredible.
Toothless opens his eyes, his pulls round and large, staring at me. Then he snorts and runs off.
I smile, gobsmacked as I watch him go. I can't believe that just happened!
I duck under the shied and head off, a pep in my step as my mind races and I go over the moment again and again in my head.
++++
I get to the village with my head down, a little lost in thought, when suddenly someone shouts my name.
"HICCUP, FOR THE LOVE OF THOR ANSWER ME!" I spin around, startled, to see Snotlout standing there, looking frustrated.
"W-What?" I stutter, confused. Snotlout rolls his eyes.
"Gobber told me to tell you to go to the training ring. NOW!" Snotlout tells me, grumpy. "Gods, you need to go to Gothi and get your hearing checked, Useless!"
"What? But training's over?! And it's gonna be sundown in, like, three hours!" I exclaim.
"Ugh, just go already! And don't tell a single soul we had this conversation, or you'll meet my fists again!" Snotlout exclaims venomously and I gulp, steeping back.
"O-okay, I'm going!" I stutter, raising my hands in defeat and then dodging around Snotlout, taking off for the training arena.
In a few minutes I make it down there, and I lean over to catch my breath for a minute before walking in. It's really quiet.
"Gobber?" I call, stepping in. "I'm here now!"
No response. I walk into the middle of the ring and look around. It's empty. A flash of light passes, and I whip around trying to see where it went, but it's gone. My vision blurs, and I grip onto the wall to steady myself, confused. Why am I suddenly dizzy?
Suddenly I huge roar erupts behind me, and I spin to see the Monstrous Nightmare is out of his cage...and coming towards me. My eyes widen.
I let out a frightened yell and run towards the exit...but it's inner metal cage is down. When did that happen?!
I start to panic as I move to dodge fire from the dragon. There's a shield laying on the ground, so I dive to it and fumble for it, finally getting it on my arm.
Oh gods, oh gods, oh gods!
I raise it up to defend myself. I hear a human snicker form above, and I glance up to see...
"SNOTLOUT!" I shout. "Help! Help me!" Snotlout shakes his head, grinning. My heart drops as realisation sits in. I gulp down the lump in my throat. "Wait...you did this!"
"Yeah I did do this, and daddy isn't here to save you this time!" He cackles, "You'll die and I'll become heir!" Snotlout shouts as I dodge to the side to dodge the dragon.
"But I don't even WANT to be the chief of Berk!" I protest, using the shield to block some flame.
"Liar!" Snotlout growls. I look up to him and watch as he moves and opens another door from above.
Oh no. It's the Nadder.
I let out a yell as the Nadder throws spikes in my direction.
Oh my gods. I'm so dead.
I raise the shield to block some more razor sharp spines that are thrown my way.
"Oh for the love of Thor, help me Snotlout!" I beg. I look up and I see him look down at me in surprise.
"You can be heir, I don't care! I've NEVER wanted to be chief of this place!" I let out a whimper as a hot blast shoots past me, a little too close for comfort. I skid to the left to avoid a tail. "Just please, help me. T-There's someone I care about and they won't have anyone left in the world to help them if I die! I don't want to be chief!" I shout desperately as the two large dragons start circling me from above.
I see Snotlout slip over in surprise and knock into a lever.
I turn to see the rest of the dragon cage's doors sliding open. Oh no.
I let out a yelp as a flaming boulder flies past my head. Green gas starts filling the room and I pale.
Oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no!
"X makes the spot!" I hear an unknown voice say. Definitely doesn't sound like Snotlout, or anyone else I know. It echoes around me. Before I can call out, a scream of absolute terror escapes my lips as the Monstrous Nightmare pins me under his giant claws. His claws dig into my shoulders, shoving me down roughly onto the ground. My head knocks against the ground, and I wince, forced to stare at the dragon.
It raises its head as it breathes in, a glow starting deep in its throat. Then, it narrows its eyes at me and
BAM! everything goes black.
I blink my eyes open, leaping up with a strangled yell, breathing heavily. My arms raise to shield my face, but nothing comes. Seconds pass, and yet nothing happens. Warily, I lower my arms.
No dragons.
I give a confused face.
What happened?
"Now he wakes!" I hear a voice say.
Okay? Where am I?
I take in the room I'm in for the first time I'm here. There, at the end of the bed I'm audited literally crouched on, is Gobber, Gothi, Astrid and Fishlegs. Even the twins are there.
What the heck are they doing all here?! Has the world gone mad. Even Astrid looks mildly concerned!
"Uh, A-As flattering as it is to see all of you staring at me, uh, what happened?" I ask slowly.
"That's the thing. We don't know! We found you in the middle of the killing arena, blacked out." Gobber says, sounding intrigued.
"Y-you mean I was in the arena?! The last thing I remember is going into the village!" I say, trying to force myself to remember. The only things I get is the flashes from what must us be been a very vivid dream; a maniacal Snotlout, a hoard of dragons, and a weird voice.
"Okay? Gothi says.... do you remember anything else? Anything we need to know?" Gobber translates.
"Uh, well I just woke up from the weirdest dream, but that's nothing." I shrug, pressing a palm to my pounding head.
"Eh, She says tell her about it." Gobber translates. The unfamiliar voice echoes inside my head.
"X marks the spot," I mumble, furrowing my eyebrows.
"Please speak our language!" Gobber quips, which ends with a whack on the head by Gothi.
"Effectiveness of that swing, is still high!" Gobber mutters, in obvious pain. Gothi smirks to herself, the crazy old lady.
"Could you be more explanatory," Gobber rewords with a cough.
"That's the thing!" I shake my head, "I don't quite remember. I know I was standing in the arena, when all the dragons were released... by a crazed Snotlout, weirdly enough." I say.
"Exhilarating, was it?" Tuff says, not making much sense at all. I stare at him blankly. Why is he here again?
"Did you slay the dragons, and it wa so exhilarating that you slept walk to the arena to do it in your sleep, that's what Tuff means."
"I dunno, ok?! I was pinned by a dragon, a voice said 'X makes the spot', the dragon fired. Then, I woke up!" I snap, frustrated.
"Sounds like..... I got nothing." Gobber starts translating but fails. That earns him another swing from Gothi.
"It sounds like Tuffnut is sort of right, in a way." Gobber translates, earning confused looks by everyone.
"That's what Gothi says! I'm just the translator. She says for some reason you slept walk there, as it is an hour past sundown. You must of hit your head, so you can't remember the last two hours before you slept. It could be a sign from the Gods. It could mean you just have an emotional connection to the ring, it could mean nothing." Gobber translates.
"Not to seem rude, but w-what are you doing here Astrid? In fact what are all of you doing here? I-I'm guessing I'm in Gothi's, and if you say it's past sundown that must mean it's almost time to go to the watchtower. Why are you all here?" I mutter awkwardly.
"Astrid's the one tha' found ya. As for the rest of them, they were bored," Gobber responds before Astrid can open her mouth.
"Okay...thanks? I guess? Can I go now?" I ask, moving the sheets aside and sitting my feet onto the floor. I spot my boots by the bed and pull them on, feeling the eyes of everyone in the room.
Gothi nods so I walk past everyone, a little wobbly at first but then strongly, with a hand pressed to my head.
"This better not swell," I grumble to myself as I leave the room.
The walk down from Gothi's and to my house is long and boring, so when I get to my home I breath a sigh of relief.
I close the door behind me and grab some ice, placing it on my head in hoes it will bring down the swelling.
I find as I go to to leave the house a half hour later, it does.
(I don't care if this is accurate or not, it is in this story Kay 😂 )
+++++
Its a few hours later and we're all on top of the watch tower, as it's well and truly night. I had dropped into the forge and spent some time drawing, bored.
Gobber is telling a very..gruesome..story. "...And with one twist, he took my hand, and swallowed it whole. And I saw the look on his face: I was delicious. He must have passed the word, because it wasn't a month before another one of them took my leg!"
I'm kind of sick of hearing this story.... Gobber tells it to me like twice a month.
"Isn't it weird to think that your hand was inside a dragon? Like if your mind was still in control of it, you could have killed the dragon from the inside by... crushing his heart, or something!" Fishlegs says.
I don't move from my position, staring blankly at the fire as I roast my fish... I'm not really looking forward to eating it to be honest.
I think I'll give fish a miss for today. Especially after.... all THAT. I know for a fact that even my brain couldn't fake the meet with Toothless. So I know something must have happened after leaving. Did I even make it to the village? I guess I'll never know.
"I swear, I'm so angry right now! I'll avenge your beautiful hand and your beautiful foot. I'll chop off the legs of every dragon I fight. With my face!" Snotlout grumbles.
What Gobber declares next has me looking up.
"Un-unh. It's the wings and the tails you really want. If it can't fly, it can't get away. A downed dragon is a dead dragon. "
A downed dragon, is a dead dragon.
Downed is dead.
"Alright. I'm off to bed. You should be, too. Tomorrow we get to the big boys. Slowly but surely making our way up to the Monstrous Nightmare. But who'll win the honor of killing it?" Gobber adds.
A downed dragon, is a dead dragon! GO!
I hear their voices echoes as I step swiftly down the stairs.
"It's gonna be me. It's my destiny. See?"
"Your Mom let you get a tattoo?"
"It's not a tattoo. It's a birthmark!"
"Okay, I've been stuck with you since birth, and that was never there before,"
"Yes, it was. You've just never seen me from the left side until now!"
Finally, I'm off the tower and heading for the forge. After hearing what Gobber said about how a dragon is unable to fly with injured tail or wings, A downed dragon is a dead dragon, I've decided I need to take action. I can't let Toothless die. I just can't.
I'm heading to the forge late at night, to fix the problem Toothless is facing because of me.
I go to my desk in the forge and take out my journal. I flick to the page where the first sketch I did of Toothless is. When he was sleeping I did draw him, so now I have more than one image. I get my pencil and draw a tail fin where the missing fin is.
+++ Mini Time Skip +++
I use the pump thing (HA! I know it's called a fan now! Or, alternatively, bellows! Thanks readers! :) Ok sorry to interrupt) to heat some metal and then once it's hot enough I pull it out and start to shape it, banging onto it with a hammer.
Once I'm satisfied that it will work I cool it down and take it over to my designs.
I shift through the forge until I find an old shield that nobody uses anymore, and pry metal off it. I also break a sword down. Using weapons to make protection.
It's not long until I'm now weighing metal balls, making sure they're just right.
+++ time skip of, say, three hours+++
I hold up the tail, opening it and unfolding it. I grin, a little awes with myself. I did it! It should work!
It's just a basic brown. Maybe I'll change the colour one day, who knows. I could paint it black to match him?
I put away my mess and take my tail designs off the wall and into my journal.
I leave the tail hidden under a bunch of junk and head home. Gobber wouldn't notice it anyway.
Entering the (cold!) house I grab a blanket and work swiftly to get the fire started. Soon, I curl up in front of the warmth. Well, it is nice to go to sleep like this.

Thanks for Reading! Hope you had a Merry Christmas! I know I did. Apologies for any speeding or grammar mistakes.
Till next time, I guess.
