Chapter 43: Operation Black Hawk
*image mine*
Hey guys, I've just gotta say, that I'm about to finish high school for the year, and forever, so I won't have access to wifi a lot. :(. I will prepare chapters offline, and at any chance I get I will update, but unfortunately, I can't promise that they'll be frequent. This goes for my truth or dare book as well. I'm sorry, but it's life. Can't help it. Don't stop leaving comments or anything, because I will see them and reply when I get the chance!
Alright, with the cheery note, on with the chapter.
~~~.........~~~
Toothless' POV
"No! We're not naming it that!" Wildfire growls, glaring in anger and annoyance.
"Why not?!" Sparky whines. "Operation Rescue-Hiccup-Who-is-actually-Raven-at-the-dead-of-night sounds awesome!"
"Does it really matter what we call it?" Red hisses. All the while as they argue, I am perched on a rock that's on a tall hill, giving a view of the village over the treetops, as the full moon rises high in the stary sky, close to apexing. My mind is on the task ahead, assessing every detail, calculating what to do if anything goes wrong.
I hope this all goes smoothly. I pray to myself. We can't afford to mess it up.
My green eyes expertly scan the environment, noting where things are located, so I know what to do if anything goes wrong. But I am determined to be sure nothing does go wrong.
I'm snapped out of my thoughts by loud roaring. I glance over, maintaining my stoic and sturdy body language.
"...YEAH?! WELL! LET'S ASK TOOTHLESS!" Sparky roars loudly and turns to me. "Hey, Toothless what do you think of the name?!" He asks calmer, but quickly, ignoring my irritating expression. I turn away.
(Okay, So Basically imagine that Sparky (he's the Monstrous Nightmare) is voiced by Eddie Murphy because I just feel like it fits haha.)
"Operation Black Hawk," I answer without looking at him, as I stand high in determination, gaze hardened as I stare ahead. A breeze flows up to me, and I even manage to catch Hiccup's sent on it!
"SEE?! HE LOV— Operation Black Hawk?!" Sparky cuts himself off. "Nah, I don't get it!" He waddles off and I roll my eyes.
"Sounds perfect." Wildfire comments. I turn and jump down from the rock, turning to face the three dragons.
"Okay, here's how this is going to work." I begin once I've got their attention. "Wildfire, Sparky," The Deadly Nadder and Monstrous Nightmare respectively nod, "You guys are the distractors. You'll go in first, and basically, you're gonna draw people out, and away from the healing hut. We have to time this perfectly, for it has to be after the healer has left otherwise she'll still be in the hut." Both dragons take in the information as I speak. "And when you get my signal you are to escape safely and rejoin us." I finish.
"..Yeah, But what's the signal?" Sparky blurts. Wildfire slaps her tail into the dragon when she hears this, who growls at her in return and lights himself on fire. Wildlife roars and her tail spikes pop up.
"ENOUGH!" I snarl and both dragons stop, calming down.
"She started it!" The dragon mutters, jabbing his snout at her. She hisses.
"The signal is me roaring!" I tell them before they can start a fight. Both dragons calm down again and listen as I continue the plan.
"While you guys are distracting, I'm gonna slip down towards the hut and get Hiccup, using darkness as my cover. Red," the Gronkle looks up, hearing his voice. "You need to stay at the edge of the forest, as a lookout. If anyone returns, you sound the signal. That way I can quickly get Hiccup out of there!" Red nods. "Is anybody unclear?"
One look sent at Sparky shuts him up. I nod, satisfied, and return to the rock to wait for the right time.
"Thanks, guys, I mean it." I smile at them. "You guys are a big help."
"Yeah, well, obviously you couldn't do it without me." Sparky boasts. "I am the best, after all!"
Wildfire huffs and shuffles away from him, leaning down to talk to Red.
"His egg must have cracked when it was laid, huh. Dropped headfirst into the ground." She is quiet, but I pick it up easily. RedViper chortles a laugh. Even I can't hold one back.
"HEARD THAT!" Sparky roars at her. I turn to look at the full moon, and then a small shape as it leaves the healing but.
"It's time." I only say two words, but everyone jumps into action.
"Yes! Operation Night Hawk is a go!" Wildfire cheers as she takes to the air.
"I still like my name better." Sparky huffs as he turns a little bulkily and takes off into the air roughly. Red and I slip through the forest and stop at the border line. Red has my fake tail fin with him. I look up and watch as Wildfire dives down to the village, just as the healer has left the hut a minute ago. I watch, pleased, as Sparky lights himself on fire and roars loudly.
Third-person
"I'm SO much scarier than you!" Sparky teases, latching onto an outstretched beam as Vikings leave their huts to see the commotion.
"Bring it on!" Wildfire roars, spiking her tail. Sparky grins in his own way and takes off with a wordless roar, dodging a bola launched at him. Wildfire flings some spines at a few villagers, pushing them back, just as Sparky turns and flings his tail into one of them, knocking him off his feet and slamming him into the side of a hut harshly, knocking him out. Wildfire takes off through the village, and Sparky is quick to follow, aware of the Vikings running after them.
"You couldn't catch an updraft with both wings!" Wildfire teases Sparky as she loops around a watchtower, left-wing almost touching it, and turns to face the Vikings. Sparky glares at her as he fires at the considerably small watchtower, watching it crumple, before turning and perching on a leftover piece of it, spreading his wings and roaring at the Vikings in intimidation.
"Are you kidding?! You couldn't tell the difference between an Eel and a Scaleless if they were right in front of your snout!" He roars at her as she perches on the roof of a nearby hut, firing down at the Vikings, pushing them back and destroying a bunch of arrows before they can even get to her. More Vikings pile out and face the dragons, puzzled while there is only two of them but well aware of the threat.
Meanwhile, a certain creature takes this to be the right time to go on the move. A sleek, midnight black scaled body moves with agility down to the village, weaving between houses and trees, hiding from sight, calculating every step as the night sky is his ally.
Intelligent green eyes scan everywhere, body tense and on edge as he focuses on being stealthy and quick. Luckily, the commotion has drawn all the Vikings away from the area, and he is able to get to the healers' hut within minutes.
But, inside the small hut, a body shifts. A young boy, Auburn hair a mess, lays on a bed. Bandage here and there, and a missing presence that he will forever live with. Slowly, but surely, like the laying out f the ocean on the beach shore, he comes to awareness after a long slumber, just as the creature said to be the descendant of lighting and death itself, slips through a window. A curious sniff of the air, the creature finds its way to the backroom, where the human boy is only now just opening his eyes.
It takes him a few seconds for his eyes to adjust, and just as they do, a familiar scaly face appears in front of his eyes.
"..Too-Toothl..less?" he half mouths, half speaks, throat dry and scratchy after being so long asleep. The dragon purrs softly, head leaning down so the boy can hug him tightly. The dragon pulls back from the sweet moment after a few seconds, and has a big toothless grin on his face, tongue rolling out of his mouth as he bounces around the small room in excitement, knocking over various bottles and books.
"Haha! I..I know bud!" Hiccup laughs. "I'm happy to..to see you too!" He watches with a smile as his friend goes crazy, but pauses.
"A-Actually..where are we?" He asks, not recognising the place. A few memories come back to him. The dragon nest. Berk being there. The queen. Fire. Heat. Darkness.
"Beats me. It's apparently someplace called..uh, what was it? Wolfshadow Island? Yeah. That's what Wildfire said. Anyway, they're out there leaving half the village on a crazy chase, so we better get going." Toothless coos and grunts somewhat quickly, still very energetic. Hiccup blinks but gets what his friend is telling him. He nods, laughing, and sits up. His eyebrows furrow and he frowns, playful mood vanishing.
Toothless comes up to him, sensing something is horribly wrong. Slowly, he peels the blankets away from himself, and peers down. His eyes widen, and he lets out a shuddering breath. Slowly, he swings around, and places his right foot onto the ground, followed by..a wooden prosthetic peg leg. His eyes water with tears, and he looks up at Toothless, who shares his sorrow in his big soft green eyes. He nudges Hiccup slightly.
"We'll get through this together."
Shakily, Hiccup nods. Toothless backs up, to give his friend room.
"O-okay." Hiccup mumbles, trying to calm down, and slowly pulls himself up, leaning on his good leg, and lifts the prosthesis up. He squeezes his eyes shut, and bravely steps forward. His face confronts to pain and he falls towards the ground, But Toothless uses his head to catch his friend in the blink of an eye.
"Okay. T-Thanks buddy." Hiccup mutters, leaning heavily on his dragons left side, grabbing onto what's left of the saddle. Toothless coos lowly in comfort as he walks forward slowly, making sure Hiccup is keeping up. Right now, Toothless just wants to get Hiccup out of here.
Hiccup's eyes widen in sudden realisation.
"T-Toothless..how..how will you fly?!" Hiccup utters shakily as Toothless leads him towards the door slowly.
"As I said, we'll get through this together."
Hiccup sucks in a shaky breath. "I-I'll find a way, bud. I promise." A tear slips down his cheek. Toothless uses his head to barge the door open.
"Climb on, buddy." He coos lowly, eyes surveying the area around him. Hiccup nods and carefully climbs onto his friend. Glancing at the stirrup that he'll never be able to use again.
Toothless slowly moves forward, making sure not to make jolting movements, because that will surely not help at all.
He carefully moves through the outskirts of the village, being silent and using only smooth movements. Hiccup looks around the village, thinking it's quiet. But, then again, it's in the middle of the night. Toothless walks right to the outskirts of the village and turns around. Hiccup watches, confused, as he lets out a loud roar. An answering roar sounds, and soon, a Deadly Nadder and a Monstrous Nightmare are there.
"Hiccup! You're up!" Wildfire cheerfully greets him. He smiles slightly.
"Hey, Wildfire!" He whispers back.
"Yeah! You're up..and missing a leg." Sparky also cheers, being blunt for the last part. Wildlife growls at him and stomps on his foot. He hisses in pain but pulls himself together.
"S-Sorry, little fella." He swallows his pride and apologises to Hiccup, barely making eye contact twice, who just chuckles and shakes his head. RedViper comes to them at this moment.
"'T's Okay. I can guess it's not gonna be the only joke about it...though it is hard to believe. After all, I did only wake up ten minutes ago." Hiccup replies softly, looking down at where his shin and foot used to be. RedViper winces.
"...At least you can't have two left feet anymore!" Wildfire jokes. They're all confused for a second before they get it.
"Hey!" Hiccup protests jokingly.
Suddenly, Sparky does the dragon equivalent of a very loud gasp.
"What? What is it?" Toothless asks, looking around them suspiciously for unwanted guests.
"Oh, nothing much. Just wanted the attention!" Sparky laughs. A few seconds later and he's hissing in pain again.
RedViper nudges the tail fin forward, and Hiccup leans forward carefully to grab it, wincing as pain jolts up his stump. His stump. He has a stump.
He tries to hide the pain on his face and grips the tail fin. A pang of guilt hits him as he studies it.
Toothless can't even fly WITH ME now!
Suddenly, shouts get their attention, and they all turn to see a bunch of Vikings running at them. Hiccup's eyes widen, and he freezes, getting flashbacks.
"We have to go!" Toothless roars, breaking Hiccup out of his horrid flashback. "We have to go NOW!"
"Hiccup, climb on!" Wildfire urges him. "Hurry!"
Wearily, Hiccup scrambles up onto her back, his stump causing him to gasp in pain and grip the tail fin tightly. As soon as she's on, Wildfire flies up and out of arrow range. A second later, Sparky appears, carrying Toothless in his talons, and RedViper hovers nearby.
"W-What..now?" Hiccup asks them.
"We go back to our island." Toothless replies, and so the small swarm moves off, escaping successfully.
"Do you..think they saw me?" Hiccup breathes as they soar up to the clouds, panting slightly in pain.
"Doubt it. The shadows would of concealed us." Toothless reassures, the island shrinking slowly but surely into a speck behind then.
"They really don't know how to make a good leg, do they." Wildfire comments, looking at the wooden stick, that is secured uncomfortably on Hiccup's new stump.
"Yeah. I might make a few tweaks." Hiccup replies.
"Knowing you, you'll make a whole new leg!" Toothless chortles.
"Probably." Hiccup admits. "Not to insult them, or anything."
"Yeah. They did make sure you'd live." RedViper comments.
"And to think..we'll never get to thank them." Hiccup murmurs sadly.
"Eh, no biggy." Sparky comments. "They're only stupid scaleless."
"And these 'stupid scaleless' saved his life, moron!" Wildfire hisses back harshly.
"Calm down, guys. It's fine." Hiccup tells them, gesturing in a 'calm the heck down' way. "No need to call each other that!"
All the dragons look at him. "Wait, did you understand all of that?" Toothless asks.
"Yeah, I did." Hiccup responds, puzzled, in Dragonese. "Why? Was I not supposed to?"
"Definitely Raven." Sparky dryly croons and winces in pain when Toothless whacks him, hard, with his tail. He looks down at him.
"HEY! I WILL DROP YOU! *Huff* Ungrateful." He warns.
"Try me and see what happens." Toothless threats, growling.
Sparky shuts up.
"Uh? R-Raven? What? What-what are you talking about?" Hiccup asks.
"We'll talk when we're on land." Toothless chooses to give a vague answer. Hiccup shrugs, accepting it.
"Operation black hawk: complete." Sparky randomly trills.
"See?! Told you it's better!" Wildfire warbles in smugness. Sparky just growls at her.
"Pesky Nadder."
*whack*
"...Ow."
