Chapter 42: *insert creative chapter name here*
Toothless' POV
Two weeks. It's been two weeks since we took Hiccup to the village. We've been keeping a close eye on them, well as close as we can, but we don't know much about his condition. Right now, we're discussing what to do and when to do it.
"We can get him tonight, guys!" I urge them with hope in my eyes, pacing the ground of the cave (we found it shortly after dropping Hiccup off). "He's gotta be okay by now!" I assure both them and, admittedly, myself.
"Toothless, we don't know what condition he's in!" Wildfire reasons gently. I walk out of the cave, moonlight hitting me, and I turn to look back at her as she stands at the entrance.
"Look, think about it. Less people are going in and out of the hut now, less panic is around! We have to get him out of here tonight, before they start asking questions!" I warble, croon, and click in worry.
"I know we do, okay. But we're not healers. We don't know how to tell if he's okay. What do we do if something goes wrong with him? I think it's best to wait a little longer!" Wildfire replies. I huff in annoyance and disappointment, knowing she's probably right, looking down. Suddenly, Sparky speaks up as he flies into view, fish clutched in his talons.
"BLOOD RITUAL!" we turn to him as he lands by me. "You could do the blood ritual!" my eyes widen in recognition as a somewhat famiar poem rings through my head.
Raven is literal,
But he gets hurt badly
And the only thing that saves him
Is the blood ritual.
Mixed from the blood of his bond brother,
And some of an alpha
So swirling through his blood
His body will have a different cover.
If done to simply anyone, what
consequences will arise
Raven would survive
Others will not.
There is only one clue
To tell if it's Raven
That he will survive
if scorched by two
The fire will he be surrounded
But no harm will come
And when found
His bond brother will glow his eyes
"Are you crazy?!" I roar. "We don't even know if he is Raven for sure! Do you have any idea what it would do to him if he's not Raven?! It would kill him!" I add.
"Not to mention that he's not even awake to approve of it!" Wildfire hisses.
"We don't know where the Alpha is located!" RedViper chimes in.
"There's no proof that this will even work!" Wildfire growls. "There's no proof it's real!"
"There's no proof that it won't!" Sparky retorts.
"You do realise we would just be going off words from a poem. "Glow his eyes." I mean, what does that even mean?!" RedViper wonders.
"We don't even know who his bond brother is! How are we supposed to find him?!" I snarl.
They all stop arguing and look right at me.
"It's you." RedViper grunts.
"What?"
"It's you! Think about it! You're his bond brother. You're Sigrund. You spared him. You saved him from the Red Death. You're basically joined at the hip!" Wildfire exclaims.
Raven can't go in alone
For he needs great support
So his best friend will accompany
And the world they will roam.
Sigrund is his code name
The name of the protector
Though he has a different one
And that's not in vain.
His name, although rare
Is greatly loved.
He never knew his ole
But this one's made with care.
Sigrund, one who loves speed
A dragon who cares more
Than anything else in the world
Who'll not only pursue, but also lead
Till end o' time,
Shall he protect
As he's done from the start
Surrounded by the pine
The pair met on odd circumstances
And a loss in Sigrunds case
That eventually brought them closer
So close, that they feel the need to run.
They do just that..
Well, sort of.
My eyes widen as I recall the odd poem, of you could call it that. I mean, it stops it's rhyming scheme at the end!
Sigrund? Could..could I really be him? If that's true, then Hiccup really is Raven, and that's a lot of responsibility on us both. Are we up for that? Hiccup's only fifteen winters old, well so am I, which makes us pretty young, but it's different for dragons.
"Even if I am Sigrund, then how would we find the Alpha?! Why would he wanna help Hiccup anyway? The Alpha lives beyond this archipelago. That's all we know!" I snarl.
THIRD PERSON
Meanwhile, as the dragons continue to argue at the edge of the forest, and as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon, inside a medic hut, a young boy stirs in his slumber.
The nurse, Eva, who has been taking care of this mysterious youth since he got here, turns around having heard a noise. She studies the boy and sighs. He really is too young. Too young to loose a limb. She wonders how he will react.
She also wonders how he even got here? How he has survived? What has he been through? He looks no older than thirteen! Unfortunately, he hasn't woken up once since she found him. She fears the worst. Will he even wake up? Well, she did all she could. Now it's up to him.
She comes close, hearing him murmur things in his sleep.
"D...Don't hurt him..." he whimpers, turning his head slightly. "No...Not guilty...thousands..thousands of them! No! listen..to me! sinking.....attack..dragons.."
Eva frowns. If this is real, it sure sounds like he's been through a lot.
Astrid's POV
Today is a dark day. We've been at Berk for a little more than two weeks now. This morning, Stoick called a meeting in the Great Hall, and announced two things, and also my parents decided that they would get up and announced something.
Stock announced that, firstly, we're gonna hold a Viking funeral this afternoon for Hiccup, because we hadn't been able to do it yet since basically all the ships were broken, we were lucky the boat we took to get here lasted. Then, he announced publicly who is the new heir to Berk. And get this, he announced me. Me!
I can't believe I've got this much pressure on my shoulders! He wants me to go to chief training soon, in a few months time. I've gotta learn how to negotiate, I've gotta learn all the laws, I've gotta learn people skills, I've gotta learn about strategy. It's just...it wasn't supposed to be this way. I was supposed to be a shield maiden. Protect berk for decades. Kill all dragons I come across. Who knows? Maybe if I never gave Hiccup up then he would still be here, as heir of Berk, maybe teaching the rest of us how to control dragons! We would be unstoppable as a tribe. None would stand in our way. But nope. And it's my fault. Yay me.
Oh, right, and the thing my parents announced...
*flashback*
"So, Thank you for listening, and I ask you all to treat Astrid respectfully as the Heir, for she will lead this island to greatness. I expect you all to be at the south beach for the—for the funeral this afternoon at dusk. Now, please listen because Mr. and Mrs Hofferson have an announcement to make." So everyone claps respectively at the end of Stoick's sentence and he climbs off the chief table. I watch, surprised, as my parents climb up. My father claps his hands together to get everyone's attention.
"Morning all. So, as you've heard, our daughter is now Heir to the throne of Berk. And we've got a small announcement that will hopefully make our daughter and tribe very happy..." my father begins, and makes eye contact with me at the last sentence. I glare at him and shake my head not so subtly.
Oh no. Not the M word. Please, don't announce this arrangement!
My eyes plead with him, but he ignores it and gestures for my mother to speak. I already start moving towards the table.
"Well, Basically, we have arranged a marriage for Astrid with—"
I jump up onto the table, cutting her off with my voice. "No one! You have arranged a marriage with NO ONE! Because, if you go ahead with this, I will step down as heir, and leave Berk forever!" I yell firmly.
"What? You're gonna leave just because something doesn't go your way?!" my dad turns to me, starting an argument in front of the entire village. I look him square in the eye, fuming as I think through my words.
"Yes, if that is what it takes." I truthfully answer, earning gasps and murmurs from the crowd.
"You know this is starting to sound familiar!" My dad snaps.
"Oh, really?!" I retort quickly, knowing exactly where he's going.
"Yes. It sounds a lot like—"
"Like Hiccup, right?" I snarl, and all murmurs stop."Because he did what he thought was right?!"
"Yes! And see where that got him!" my mum yells at me. I narrow my eyes at her.
"Using the dead heir against me, huh? The one that saved you?! THE ONE THAT SAVED ALL OF US?! HE WHO GAVE HIS LIFE TO PROTECT US!" I scream, furious. I grow cold. "Well. Unless you call off the engagement, I'm out." I make eye contact with a shocked looking Stoick. "Im sorry you had to hear that from them. I suggest someone talks to them, otherwise Berk will be without a heir."
I jump off the table, and the crowd parts for me as I stalk towards the door. "Hiccup was a good person, and you just took his name in vain!" is the last thing I say before I slam the doors behind me.
I stand there with my back to the giant door for a few seconds, eyes wide now with angry tears, and hand gripping my axe handle. Then, I snap out of it, and sprint towards the woods.
*flashback over*
I sigh angrily to myself as I walk towards the south beach, axe in hand as I recover from my intense training session, if you would call it that. It's not dusk yet, but I wanted to get here early. I look around, and see a lone boulder, half buried in the soft sand. I go and sit on top of it, looking out to the ocean as I watch a small ship being sailed into view from the docks. For Hiccup's funeral.
"I'm sorry, Hiccup." I speak to the air, frowning. "I'm not the fearless warrior I thought I was. I am a Coward. I am weak. It's why I ran for Stoick that day, instead of confronting you myself. I'm sorry I let them do that to you, and I'm sorry you had to save us. I'm sorry you got disowned. I'm sorry I neglected you. I'm sorry for how I treated you, like a scum. I'm sorry you were banished. I'm sorry you ran away. I'm sorry you're dead. I'm sorry...I'm so sorry." by the end, tears are falling down my face.
Better now, alone, than later, in front of everyone.
I pull my knees to my chest and just silently cry. I'm so, so sorry.
Hiccup's POV
"You're not a Viking. You're not my son."
"This is serious, son! When you carry this axe, you carry all of us with you!"
I can't move. Can't see. Can't feel. All I do is hear echoes. Echoes of my past. Some I don't want to relive.
"Toothless was just protecting me! He's not dangerous! We don't HAVE to kill them! They act out of self defence! It's not their fault!"
"Which means you walk like us. You talk like us. You think like us. No more of... this."
"They've killed HUNDREDS OF US!"
The voices have started overlapping each other. Distant memories. Clear memories. Getting mixed up. All in some huge jumble that I can't make out. That I don't WANT to make out.
"You're not a Viking. You're not my son."
"AND YOU'VE KILLED THOUSANDS OF THEM!"
Their island? So you've been to the nest! How did you find it?!"
Stop. I want out.
"They defend themselves, that's all!"
"Just don't come looking for me when Berk is still sinking in sorrow, under attack by the Dragons!"
"They raid us because they have to!"
"You're not a Viking, you're not my son."
"You don't know what you're up against! It's like nothing you've ever seen!"
Stop!
"You've thrown your (you've thrown your) lot in wi—(with them)—th them!"
"You've thrown your lot in with them."
No!
"I promise (promise)— you that you can't win this one!"
"FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU PLEASE JUST LISTEN TO ME?! (LISTEN TO ME!)"
"Not So fireproof on the inside, are you?!"
"Alright, buddy, we gotta get out of here."
"It's just you and I for now on, Bud."
"Is this some kind of a joke to you?! Our parents' war is about to become ours! Figure out which side you're on!"
"It's just you and I for now on, Bud."
"We don't have to go up there."
"Eh, I'm a Dragon Rider, bud. (Figure—figure out what side you're on!)..It's an Occupational Hazard."
"And I'm PROUD to call you my Rider, Hiccup!"
"I'll always be!"
"That thing has wings! (you carry all of us with you!) Okay, let's see if she can use them!"
"Then, lets do this! (I'll always be!)"
"Together. As one."
"LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!"
"HERE IT COMES!!! (Together. As one)"
"You're not a Viking, you're not my son."
"No! NO!"
"It's an Occupational Hazard."
"No. No!"
"Together. As one."
"We don't have to go up (you and I) there."
"It's just you and I for now on, Bud."
"You're not a Viking. You're not my son!"

Thanks for reading. It was pretty interesting to write the echoes if you know what I mean. Basically the stuff in brackets ( ) is the echoes or overlap of other words. Like if you're looking at the lyrics of a song and the brackets is the back up. I hope it wasn't too confusing. It's probably not. It was just weird, and fun, to write haha 😂.
If you have any questions about anything, feel free to drop a comment or anything like that. Nobody reads these anyway so bye 😂
