Chapter 37: Hero or there-o

(Haha like my play on words? Here-o there-o....Hero! I'm a genius. Not.)

Pic mine haha.

So it took me quite a while to get this chapter to my likings, and I know it's not perfect but it's just gonna have to do.

thankfully it was mostly pre written.

(Four hours later from Astrid's POV.  I hope this isn't too confusing even though nothing about that sentence is confusing lol. Its confused me and I'm the one writing!)

Astrid's POV. (Still in the past)

"Steady! Keep your eyes open!" Stoick orders as all of the ships slowly approaches the fog. The gang and I stand up, clutching our weapons close. This is it. This is my destiny. Whatever lies behind that fog, will be no more. I will restore the Hofferson reputation. This, This is for my uncle.

"Listen... Stoick... I was overhearin' some of the men just now and, well, some of them are wonderin' what it is we're up ta here-- no' me of course, I know you're always th' man with th' plan-- but some, NOT ME, are wondering if there is in fact a plan at all...and what it might be?" Gobber not so smoothly asks Stoick, fiddling with his prosthetic hook.

Stoick responds with a simple and cold "Find the nest and take it." as he stares stiffly ahead.
Okay..that's pretty basic, you'd think you need a more complex plan when you're about to defeat the dragons nest. Well we're practically here already, so there's one step done in his basic plan.
"Ah. Of course. Send them running. The old Viking fallback. Nice and simple." Gobber responds nervously.
We don't know what we're facing...this could be a bad plan. This IS a bad plan!

*Flashback*
"They raid us because they have to! If they don't bring enough food back, they'll be eaten themselves! There's something else on their island, Dad... it's a dragon like--" His voice is cut off by Stoick.

"Their island? So you've been to the nest! How did you find it?!" Stoick interogates.

"I Didn't find it! You should know that no one here could find it! No viking can. But you, no, You don't know what you're up against! It's like nothing you've ever seen! I promise you that you can't win this one! No, you can't! FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU PLEASE JUST LISTEN TO ME!" Hiccup shouts.

"You've thrown your lot in with them. You're not a Viking. You're not my son!"

*flashback over*

Hiccup was saying something about a dragon...
I'm knocked from my thoughts when Stoick takes control of the ship and watches as the Nadder goes rigid, moving its head from left to right. This guides us around the sea stacks safely.
Fascinating...Ugh. I sound like Fishlegs.
"Whoa!" someone calls. We look up to see a ship is halfway up a sea stack, trapped.
What the...
"I was wondering where that went..." Gobber mutters dryly as we sail slowly by.

"How did it even get up there?" Randi asks no one, freaked out. I shrug helplessly.
"I'm.....not so sure I want to find out..." Fishlegs mutters.
Me too.

(+time skip. Thirty minuets.)

Finally the fog whirls away, and in front of us is a large island with a massive volcano and tremendous rocky shores. There is no vegetation on this island. No soil. Only pebbles and sand litter the surface. It's cold, lifeless. Like its inhabitants. My eyes widen at the sight. I'm filled with hope, fear and anxiety.
This is it. We're here. Time to make history.

The main ship, the one we're on, hits against the rocks as it sails right in and Stoick jumps down, being the first Viking known to ever reach the nest successfully. I jump down after him, landing with a thud. We are joined by everyone else on the ship. The other vikings from the other ships row in and join us quickly, too.

Stoick quickly gives the orders to unload all the weapons. I climb back onto the ship to help, grabbing a bunch of spears from a barrel, next to the dragon.

I jump back as I see it's eyes. They're rounder than usual, but they're scared. So scared.

Maybe.....they're not mindless? Like Hiccup tried to say?
I shake off my thoughts.
No, its just scared that we finally made it. Gee Astrid don't be stupid! Gods woman!

"When we crack this mountain open, all hell is going to break loose!" Stoick announces loudly about twenty minutes later when we're all set up and ready to go. Gobber decides to chime in with: "In my undies. Good thing I brought extras!" I roll my eyes and draw my axe, eyes narrowed in anticipation.
No time for jokes.

Most Vikings look at Gobber, disgusted and crept out.
"That's not what he meant, Gobber." Snotlout mutters, grossed out.
"I wish I thought ahead like he did." Fishlegs whimpers from next to me. I narrow my eyes and take a side step away from him.

Stoick continues. "And no matter how this ends, it ends today! No matter what comes, no matter how many, how vicious, WE FIGHT!"
People echo "We fight!" in response.
"Wow. He's uh...very keen?" Fishlegs squeaks, nervously gripping his hammer.
"I'm not liking this..." I mumble anxiously, shifting my weight.

Stoick holds his hammer up and at the ready and clenches his fist. The many catapult operators take the cue and launch boulders high, that all come together to break a huge hole into the side of the mountain, striking loudly one after the other, crumbling the dragons home and making the ground shake with every hit. Silence falls as we all await what happens next.

Stoick walks up, stands right in front of the hole and rolls his shoulders, with his weapon at the ready. A big ball of straw is lit on fire, launched from a catapult, over Stoick, and into the hole. I gasp at the sight as it Immediately reveals thousands of dragons hugging the walls of a tunnel.
Whoa.

Stoick charges in screaming loudly, and so others follow suit. The gang and I were ordered to wait outside and attack any dragons that come at us. Not much fun but hey, I'll take what I can get. Besides I don't wanna be sent back to Berk.

But not a single dragon attacks. Not one of them! They all fly fast out and speed away like this place means nothing to them. Like they're glad to leave their home of seven generations!

Gobber is confused much like the rest of us. "Is that it?!" He asks, shocked, scratching his head.
Spitelout gets pretty happy though. "We've done it!" he cheers, so everyone else joins in. But suddenly a deep rumbling rumble roar can be heard, I cover my ears as the mountain starts to crack.

Oh my gods. Oh my gods. Oh my gods. My mind repeats in shock and fear. I dread what we're about to face. Every bone, every fiber, in my being, is telling—no, screaming—at me to run.

Sroick steps back, frantic. "This isn't over. Form your ranks! Hold together!" he shouts. The mountain cracks more. "Get clear!"
Something starts breaking through the large mountain. I move backwards, eyes wide in panic.
Oh.my.gods.

"Beard of Thor... what is that?" Gobber exclaims as Stoick runs back, something breaking through the mountain.

To answer his question, a MASSIVE, MASSIVE dragon with claws longer then three longboats put together and a mountain like figure emerges, roaring furiously. I go pale.
We're dead.

Stoick, our fearless chief himself, seems to quiver. "Odin, help us!" he mutters dramatically.
What do we do?!

"Catapults!" Stoick orders, trying to do something. We all gasp in fear and horror when the massive boulders launched just simply bounce off of the dragon like small pebbles.

Oh, great. now, now we're all dead!
"We should of listened to Useless..." Snotlout mutters.
"I should of stayed on Berk."  Fishlegs quivers.
"What we should be doing, is—"
"Get to the ships!" A Viking shouts frantically.
In response the big beast turns and scorches the ships, some barely managing to stay afloat while others are sinking, sunken or half and half.
No!

"No! NO!" Stoick shouts.
Gobber pipes up, "Heh. Smart, that one!" referring to the viking.
Now we're trapped here.
"I was a fool." Stoick mutters, then he turns to Spitelout. "Lead everyone to the far side of the island!"
We were all the fools.

Spitelout obeys with a nod. "Right. Everybody to the far side of the island!" He directs, hurrying us all.
"Gobber, go with the men!" Stoick orders as we all start follow Spitelout reluctantly.

"I think I'll stay, just in case you're thinking of doing something crazy!"
"I can buy them a few minutes if I give that thing someone to hunt!" I look back to see Gobber catching Stoick's hand.

"Then I can double that time!" Gobber replies as they grasp each other in a hand/fist sort of way.
Oh gods they're suicidal.
I turn back around to follow the others as Stoick shouts loudly at the beast.
How's Berk gonna survive without a Chief huh?!

"HERE!"
"Oh, no, HERE!" Gobber shouts. "COME ON, BITE ME! "
"NO, ME!" Stoick replies.
"Now they're fighting over who's going to die first. Yay." Randi grumbles from next to me.

I spin and watch in horror as a huge claw is about to flatten both the chief and his friend. But suddenly, the dragons head is hit with a burst of fire as a blur flies in the way. I gasp, eyes widening. The dragon roars, attention drawn elsewhere, and Stoick and Gobber are able to scurry away.

Everyone stops to watch as three dragons swoop down into view, the black one at the front turning over to reveal a person in a cloak seated on it's back, on a saddle. The dragon isn't just any old dragon. It's a Night Fury.

The wind blows the hood back to reveal Aurburn-brown hair. I gasp.
No...
Piecing forest green eyes are looking down at us in bitterness, fear, anger, hate, disbelief, and worry.

"Watch your back, Wildfire! Move, RedViper!" He calls to the other dragons around him.

Yes. That's him..that's--
"Hiccup?" Stoick mutters, shocked as we look up at the surprise entrance.

"Up, let's move it!" Hiccup urges loudly to the dragons.
Oh gods.
"Every bit the boar-headed, stubborn Viking you ever were!" Gobber exclaims in shock, and I just see Stoick wordlessly nodding, probably wondering while his son whom (I still hate that word) is supposedly banished/self-banished has returned.

Hiccup eyes the large dragon as they circle from above.
"Okay, I gotta break it down!" I hear him declare. I share a nervous and bewildered look with Randi.
I can't believe it! He's here to-to save us!

Third POV.
"Alright! So, uh, heavily armored skull and tail made for bashing and crushing! Steer clear of both, guys! Small eyes, large nostrils! Relies on hearing and smell but has six eyes, so be careful!" Hiccup lists out loud, like a leader, as he and the other three dragons circle the beast. "We've got this, guys. We can do this! We just have to focus!"

"Okay! Red, hang in its blind spot! Make some noise, keep it confused! Wildfire, I need you to find out if it has a shot limit! Make it mad!"
He named the other dragons? Astrid wonders.
The Gronkle flies down and hangs around the dragons head. The Nadder squawks, staying in place happily.

"Yes, I know it's your specialty! Very you. Just do as I say! I'll be back as soon as I can!" Hiccup exclaims. The Nadder nods and zooms is to join the Gronkle.

"Troll!" Wildfire utters giddily.
"Six eyes!" she continues, enjoying this a little too much.
"Mate of a Gronkle!" she finishes, sending a look to Red that says no offense!

"Uh, this thing doesn't have a blind spot!" Red calls, worried, as he buzzes in place. "Fat ugly beast." He growls.

Hiccup spots the trapped Nadder still on the ships (that are now on fire) "There! Come on, bud!"
He guides Toothless to land by the boats, and jumps off. Toothless turns to him, ready to follow.

"Go help the others!" Hiccup urges, pointing at the giant dragon.
"Are you SURE?!" Toothless hesitates, not wanting to leave him alone.
"Yeah! I'll be fine! Please, Go bud!"

Toothless, with one more glance at Hiccup as he climbs onto the ship, runs towards the Red Death and darts between its feet.

"What's wrong, My Queen. Can't catch me?!" Toothless teases.

"Okay, hold on. Hold on!" Hiccup utters in Dragonese as he pulls on the poor Nadders chains. "i'm gonna get you out." he swears. The Nadder looks at him with newfound hope and shock. This small viking has returned to save me.

"Hey, It's working!" Red cheers as the Red Death shakes it's head, confused. All the dragons are flying by it's face, succeeding in annoying and confusing it. This all happens as the Berkians watch on like they've been struck by speed stingers, too scared or shocked to do or say anything other than keep their distance as they watch dragons attacking another dragon.

"I can't miss! What's wrong honey? Got something in your eye?" Wildfire teases, stabbing her spiked tail viciously into one of it's eyes. It shrieks in pain.

The Red Death, infuriated, stomps sloppily in the water— which knocks Hiccup and the Nadder into the freezing ocean, just as Hiccup pulls off a chain. The bad news is, that a large plank of wood snaps up and strikes Hiccup on the back of his head--sending him unconscious as he and the dragon sink underwater, his hand still clutching a chain.

Toothless roars in distress when he see's it happen. He dodges a big foot and roars loudly at his friends up above.

"KEEP GOING!" He shrieks before running full pelt towards the water, growling at himself for leaving his best friend alone.

Toothless runs right past Stoick, eyes narrowed in determination and fear at the water, not focused on one thing. Save him.
He leaps up high, tucking his wings in and diving underwater and out of sight.

Up above, every Viking is silent. The Red Death focuses on the dragons bugging her, the Berkians wonder if their only chance is gone, and Stoick wonders what happened to his son, and why he's not finishing what he started—Why he's being a coward.

With an enraged roar, the Dragon Queen knocks harshly into Wildfire, and she is sent tumbling towards the ground. She hits the ground and rolls to a stop by the waters edge. She shakes herself and stands up slowly, peeking at the waters surface.
Hurry up, guys, we need you! She pleads as she stretches her tired wings and takes back to the air. Suddenly, as she is about to zip off, she notices a shape getting bigger and bigger in the water.

Boom! Toothless bursts out of the water, spraying it everywhere, with Hiccup clutched to his side, and the Nadder carrying them.
The Nadde drops Toothless onto some pointy rocks, who drops Hiccup down carefully, and both dragons turn to watch as Hiccup bursts up, coughing. Knowing he's okay, Wildfire takes off back to the battle, accompanied by the other Nadder as she decides to help.

"Hiccup!" Toothless roars, nuzzling his friend. "I was SO worried! I'm NOT letting you out of my sight ever again!"

Hiccup's POV
"I'm o-okay bud, thank you!" I reply warmly as I hug my best friends head, the haze I feel lifting off. I stop and look up to the sky—to the battle. The battle we have to finish.
"We don't have to go up there." Toothless growls with concern, looking me in the eye.

"Eh, I'm a Dragon Rider, bud. It's an Occupational Hazard." I answer, smiling. I catch a glimpse of Stoick watching us. Stoick really needs to accept that. He probably thinks I'll come back to Berk when this is over. But I'll not. Not ever.

"And I'm proud to call you my Rider, Hiccup!" Toothless answers kindly, nuzzling me. "I'll always be!" and I laugh with tears in my eyes as I rub my forever loyal best friends head.
"Then, lets do this!" I answer softly, and I see the determination set on his face as he nods. "Together. As one." I swiftly swing up to the saddle.

(A/N: Why did them three paragraphs above make me almost cry? Maybe it was because I was listening to a sad song? Thinking about thw?)

He purrs happily, and I click open the tail. We shook up to the sky, spinning as we go. The air caresses us once again, provides us with safety and comfort, and I focus on the battle ahead.

"YES! THEY'RE UP!" Wildfire cheers. I've noticed that the Nadder I saved, the one from training, is helping us greatly.

I also unfortunately see that RedViper is down, nursing his wing. He must of took a hard blow. I wince.

"Get Red out of there!" Toothless orders, already on it, so Wildfire dodges the Red Death's swinging claw and flies down, moving Red away just in time. I smile in relief and urge Toothless up.

Toothless flies up even higher, before slowing and tipping over. He folds his wings to his side and dives—the shrill whistle sounding around us as I clutch the saddle, whooping.
"NIGHT FURY! GET DOWN!"
"Gobber!" I exclaim quietly to myself, shaking my head in amusement.

We see the other Nadder being sucked into the Red Deaths mouth as we face downward. I pat Toothless' head as a signal and he fires, knocking the Nadder away to safety and disorienting the Red Death.

"Yes!" I quietly cheer to myself as we swoop around to face the dragon.
Five shots left... Will they last?

Quote of the Chapter  (from THW)

Tuffnut: Hiccy! A moment? Listen, I've been watching you walk. Lose the limp. No one's gonna marry that. (chuckles)
Hiccup: I have a prosthetic leg!
Gobber: So have I!
Tuffnut: And I have parasitic twin, but you don't see me limping around about it! Come on.
(Tuffnut tries to make Hiccup keep his chin up.)
Tuffnut: Chin up, Hiccy!
(Tuffnut pats Hiccup's chest but Hiccup doesn't approve of it so he pushes Tuffnut's hand away.)
Tuffnut: Pop out that chest!
(Hiccup walks away and then Tuffnut slaps Hiccup's butt.)
Tuffnut: Move that butt to the left a little bit!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Oh, and I bought THW, which you might know if you saw my message a while ago haha, but I've been kind of a coward. I haven't watched it yet. I mean, I saw it in the cinemas, but can my heart really take all that again?! 😂

Bye!
