Chapter 33: Seriously, who needs trees? and, Some cloth...Finally!

Published two chapters cause It's my birthday and I can :)

Hiccup's POV

So it turns out, that these people like to stay in their tree for as long as possible. It's been THREE HOURS, THREE GODS FORSAKEN HOURS, and if we don't move soon I'm gonna scream of impatience! They've spent the whole time chatting about random stuff. Anything from how old they think Mildew is, to conspiracy theories that have been floating around the village. Who would do that?! What could possibly be so bad or important that would make them stay in a tree ALL friggan day! That's right, I heard them say they won't leave till Nightfall. I mean, I heard Stoick's name mentioned a few times, so that could be part of the reason they are in a random tree, but I'm not gonna lie: I DON'T CARE. Ugh what a waste of time!

Toothless and I are starting to get cramps and also.... we're getting a little hungry. I adjust myself slightly from the position I have of lazily laying on top of Toothless' head with one of my hands dangling while I support my chin with the other. We're kinda lucky though, because no one has looked over in our direction ONCE. What are the odds of that?!

I reach, as quietly as I can, into the saddlebag and pull out two fish and some bread. I ever so silently give Toothless the fish, and he quickly and quietly eats it, while I silently tear off some bread and eat it, before lying back down and closing my eyes. A few minutes later, which feel like hours, A bell rings faintly in the distance, coming from the village. My guess snap open as they all let out collective moans of annoyance or exasperstion.

I mean what do--HEY! HEY, THEY'RE LEAVING! I perk up happily as they all reluctantly start moving. Toothless and I share a hopeful gaze.
We watch as they finally climb down—well, Snotlout fell— and wander ever so slowly along the path.

We take this as a signal to get off ourselves, so I pat Tootlhess head, and so we do just that. Toothless jumps down from the tree--causing it to shake violently-- and we hit the ground with a thud.

By the time they turn around to look at what did the loud noise, we're long gone.

As soon as we're safely far enough away, we stop and we both stretch. I hop off, stretching my legs and back out as soon as I touch the ground.
"Oh, thank Thor it's over! It's gonna be sunset in a few hours!" I exclaim while rubbing my collarbone, trying to relive some tension. "Way to waste the day!" I scoff.

"How long do they .. to be in the tree?!" Toothless exclaims in shock as he runs circles around me, obviously trying to get the feeling back in his legs and wings.

"Even I wouldn't sit in a tree that long. I-I'd at least drop down for a walk!" I add as we start to move towards The Cove.

"Nah, you would be swinging from .. to .., like .. crazy person!" Toothless replies stretching.

"I have done that! It's actually not that bad." I respond as we walk. "It's pretty fun! As long as you don't miss the branch and fall..."
"That .. doesn't surprise me..." Toothless growls and I chuckle.

"Ugh. It was only supposed to be a quick walk!" I grumble as we walk into the Cove a few minutes later.

Toothless curls up to sleep in the afternoon sun and I sit down on a slight bank, sketching him (again).
I should get a book just for my sketches of Toothless.
++++++ a few hours later +++++++

(Twenty minutes after sunset)

"Here we are, bud! Ya know you didn't have to come!" I whisper to Toothless. He decided to walk with me until it's almost the edge of the forest. The shadows conceal us both from sight.

"Yeah, of .. I did! So, I'll .. .. here!" He tells me. I nod because there's no convincing him anyway, and so I begin to wander towards the village. I soon enter, and make the small trek towards the docks. I'm really cautious to avoid every Viking on watch, sticking to the shadows and treading lightly as all I do is hope and pray that we can be out of here quickly.

As I near the small cluster of Fishing Huts I unexpectedly hear voices coming from the exact hut that I was in yesterday—the one where I saw the fabric.

I duck behind a few random, empty crates as I hear them leave the hut in a big, obnoxious, rowdy, Viking-ly mess. I peek out ever so slightly to see that three Vikings are leaving. And one of them has the white sheet of fabric with them.

Damn it. I'll have to find some other fabric somewhere. And fast.

I look around me, and thankfully the Vikings are out of view.
But first, time to get some nourishment.

I make my way into the now empty shed and heave a woven basket down from the shelf.
Toothless would bite my head off if I didn't get him any food.

After close inspection, I discover that it is pretty much the same as last time, except that there's some mackerel included, and once again there's no Eels. I grab a fishing rod and a bucket of small bait from by the door, before I quickly peek my head out of the door slightly in order to check if the coast is clear.

I see no one, so I run out with my head down, and try to be as quiet as I can as I focus on finding some fabric before it's too late.
Okay. Now that that's taken care of, where could there be fabric?

I make my way through the village, going as quiet as I possibly can, scanning my surroundings carefully. Finally, my gaze lands on a small building in the distance, risen on a hill.
Mrs Ack! She makes clothes! The best in the village! Duh! I honestly feel like slapping my forehead as I realise how obvious it was this whole time.

I make a quick left, looking over my shoulder a few dozen times, and near her house. Her hut—though the same size as every other house pretty much, and the same colour too—is not easy to miss. It has a little serving window with its cover currently rolled down, and a table outside that lists prices of clothing. Not that Vikings read it.
Okay. So, I need a way to get some fabric WITHOUT waking her up. She is scary. REALLY scary. I'm pretty sure she has knives woven into her hair. I heard a rumour from the teens, that she was sentenced to a month in the dungeons a few months ago because she attacked Mr. Angler in the middle of the night. Apparently he escaped psychically decent, but had been having constant nightmares ever since. Yep. That's what being stuck in a tree for three hours gets you.

So, after a quick decision, I make my way to the back of her hut. After quick inspection I see a small window, yet it is big enough for someone of my size and stature to fit through.
Hmm....okay, so if I climb through..HEY, FABRIC!

A sheet of purple fabric is literally hanging up here, in the open, on its own. It was probably drying or something.
Much easier than the complicated plan I was coming up with.
I quickly grab a hold of the fabric and feel it between my fingers. It feels soft, yet firm and flexible, which to me is ideal tail material. Yeah, this'll do. I nod to myself and yank it down from the windowsill almost soundlessly, quickly folding and tucking the fabric under my arm, before heading on my way with a basket of fish on my back, the rod in my other hand, and my head down as I move along as quickly and quietly as I can.
Perfect! I didn't have to risk on waking her up, and dealing with her scariness!

I walk by one of the food stores, and it captures my attention.
I may be a small kid, but I am so sick of eating bread and fish. I guess I get it from Stoick. I'm not as much as a pig as he is, though. My portion isn't even half of his. I'm actually a human at the table. I'm not that greedy to eat as much as him! I sneak into the shop and spot a whole bunch of uncooked mutton hanging by string/rope.
I guess they won't miss it?

I check over my shoulder quickly and then end up grabbing two small chucks, trying to ignore the fact that I'm stealing. Oh gods. I'm stealing. Again! And not just that, It's from my old tribe! I vowed to myself that I never would come back to this island, yet here I am. I have to leave! I HAVE to!

I shake my head to clear my thoughts, changing subjects.
I'll cook them later on. I wrap the meat in the fabric since I have no where else to put them. Right now I just wanna get back to Toothless.

I make my way out of the shop and hurry along through the streets of Berk, hoping to actually make it back to Toothless before sunrise and without being caught.

Ordinarily, I WOULD go strait to the forge, but I can hear the clanging of metal hitting metal from here. I know that there is no way that I would remain unnoticed..... or, I guess, undiscovered..... by Berk if I went in there right now. Gobber stays up all night when he does this. So I can't do it tonight, unfortunately.

I keep my head down as I move on quickly, and quietly.
Who knows, maybe I have some tools left over in the saddle bags? I guess I'll have to check.

I hurry to get out of the sleeping village and back towards the forest.
Truthfully, I'm getting impatient and I know that Toothless can only be hidden for so long. How long will it be until a villager stumbles across the Cove? How long will it be until I am caught sneaking around? How long until the Red Death has no more patience left? Or figures out a plan against us? What then?

I hear a quick rustle and look up to see Toothless drop down from a tree.
"Hey bud!" I smile calmly in greeting. He comes up to me and coos curiously.
"Yeah, I got some cloth and some food. Hope you like purple!" I show him the fabric.

"Looks good!" He replies. He turns, and gestures to his saddle. I shrug and climb on. Toothless takes off running and I let out a yelp, quickly clutching the saddle.

Soon enough we come to The Cove and Toothless leaps down the side. I get off him and set down the basket, rod, and food. I lay the fabric down and turn to Toothless, checking for tools.

"It won't be long bud," I begin as I sift through the bag. "The forge was in use so sadly I can't fix the tai—Ooh never mind here's some tools! Thank Gods!" I cut myself off, bringing up some small tools. Toothless brings his tail closer for me, and we both sit on the ground, as I slowly get to work on getting the right shape of the material. The good thing is that the metal is in near decent condition, aside from a little bending and untangling done by me, which means that I don't have to reforge any of it since it appears to be good enough to hold out in flight. "Hang on there bud, I'll be a while." I mumble to him, tugging on a metal rod.

"Okay then, that's fine...so...Do I smell fish?"
I chuckle and tip over the basket with one hand. Toothless digs in, discovering that this time some Mackerel is in there as well, as I had discovered before—keeping himself busy as I get to work on the tail. I take it slow and carefully, trying to not make any mistakes because I have limited tools and I don't want to mess up.

+++
It's now been about an hour, and I have just finished the tail. I nod to myself as I ran a hand over and under my work, checking for any rips or uneven strips.
I'm not going to lie, it's near perfect! I did great with this lack of materials.
"It's pretty fragile, we will just have to remember that. But it's all good got now,  bud." I tell him with a nod and he gives me a gummy smile, before running off to splash around in the lake randomly before I can stop him.
I, myself, go over and start the fire—the ashes are still warm so I recon they'll be able to light the fire once again. I grab a handful of long, dry grass and a poking stick. I use the stick to 'play' with the hot ashes and charcoal that are left over, digging in deep to reveal the slightly hot ashes and pushing them around.

Luckily, in a minutes time, I have managed to re-light the fire. I cheer quietly as I build it up, with Toothless still playing around in the background, as well as catching himself the odd fish or two, like I didn't just give him a hundred.
I'm gonna keep the left over fabric in case I need it for repairs.
I make my way to the water with the fabric and dip it in (something I should of done with the material that I made into the tail, but since Toothless went for a swim I guess it's fine). I wash it thoroughly and then I strip down.

I go for a swim and make sure I'm clean, diving under water to get rid of anything in my hair. I then dip my clothes in so that they will be clean too, before I get out and hang up my clothes and the cloth on a little stick line I set up, so that they can dry out by the fire. Yes, I'm naked.

Toothless and I decide to just wait a while before we go. Because It's suddenly become incredibly windy and rainy, and we think it's going to get worse. We can't risk flying through this storm and breaking the already fragile tail. If it wasn't for the thin blanket (remember how I found it folded up in the saddle bag), or especially the shelter of Toothless' wings, I could possibly die out—I'm naked.

I'm not gonna sugar coat it–Berk is cold, wet and miserable. It has a habit of having persistent storms that can rage for days on end and chill you to the very marrow of your bones, driving every Berkian to camp in front of the fire with a dozen blankets and hot stew all round as they hope and pray to the gods that they won't die of hypothermia or complete and utter boredom. Berk is almost as stubborn, unpleasant and tasteless as the people who inhabit it.
*cough* Stoick *cough*

So that is why I'm at a risk of dying, and why Toothless and I have to be careful.
And, as I drift into sleep, accompanied by the breathing of Toothless and the warmth he gives me inside and out, I am unaware of a pair of eyes watching me.

Quote of the Chapter:

My friend: Look what you did! You made me cry! (After I made him laugh too much)
Me in a baby voice: aww you must of looked in the mirror again!
My Friend: *insulted while I laugh at what I said*

Another quote cause I can: (from THW)
flashback of Hiccup who notices his father, Stoick, is crying in front of the fireplace. Stoick realizes Hiccup is in the room.)
Stoick: Son! (wipes his tears away) You should be asleep.
Hiccup: I was thirsty.
Stoick: Yeah, come here.
(Hiccup climbs downstairs and runs to his dad. Stoick lifts Hiccup onto his lap and allows him to use tongs for the fire.)
Hiccup: Dad? Are you gonna get us a new mom?
(Stoick hugs Hiccup and kisses his head.)
Stoick: I don't want another. Your mom was the only woman for me. She was the love of my life. But with love comes loss, son. It's part of the deal. Sometimes it hurts, but in the end, it's all worth it. There's no greater gift than love.

😦👋 😭😭😭 I'm so sad I wish Httyd didn't end...it shall forever live on! In the very is presence of us Dragonites and our fanfics!
