Chapter 28: An interesting training session
(Thirteen days later.)
Hiccup's POV.
*Yawn*
"Whoo. Another day of doing... Absolutely nothing. " I mumble, sitting up. "So...maybe we can go for a fishing trip or lure some dragons away from the nest and free..." I add. "..them?"
"Bud?" I call in Dragonese, waking up fully. I look around to see him gone from where he slept next to me in the cave.
Where is he? I mean, he's a Night Fury he can probably handle himself, but still. I just wanna know where he is.
"Hello young one. The queen has ..... me and a few .... to take you .. to .. you. Do not worry, the Night Fury ... safe." I turn to see a purple Nadder standing in the lighter part of the cave. This Nadder's eyes are slitted, but it's spikes are smoothed down like it's calm. it's really creepy.
Yes, with nothing else to do Toothless and Wildfire have been teaching me Dragonese. I'm getting pretty fluent in it. Wildfire would fly over once a day and help Toothless teach me. They're both impressed on how quickly I can pick it up. it really is weird. A human speaking the dragon-tongue?! No one would ever see it coming. Ever.
"Oh....uh.....Well alright? But are you sure he'll be fine?" I hesitate, looking around for him. The Nadder is being controlled.
"Oh, yes he's perfectly fine. The Queen .... him to the nest." A blue Gronkle says, flying into view, scaring the crap outa me.
"But he can't fly on his own!" I exclaim, getting worried.
"He can't? Oh ... I guess .... just have to ... the beaches." A red Monstrous Nightmare says, also monotone. They're hiding something.
"Well, but how would he even get over there? Swim?! And we don't work for her! She promised us freedom!" I snap, frustrated. The dragons just stare at me blankly.
Ugh!
"......As long as he's okay..." I hesitantly say after a minute, because there's nothing I can do.
Stupid Queen.
"Enough ...., Time to go!" The Nadder says, picking me up by my shirt and taking off!
"AAAH!" I yelp. " H-HEY I'M PERFECTLY FINE TO MAYBE RIDE ON YOUR BACK!" I roar, not trusting my tunic to stay in tact. I'm not wearing my fur vest because yesterday Toothless dove us into the ocean. 'Apparently' I smelt. So now its soaking wet. We both know it was an excuse. So, I'm only wearing my green tunic and my flying outfit.
The Nadder roles her eyes and flips her head up, letting go. I tumble through the air and land on her back, immediately relaxing.
"Much better!" I murmur.
+++
"Hey, where are we going?" I ask the tense Nadder. The other two dragons are flying next to us. We've been flying over our small island for a few minutes. Won't be long and it'll be just ocean.
"You will see!" came the monotone reply.
Maybe I could train these dragons..... it's worth a shot.
Eventually I'm dropped into a clearing with a thud, apparently the Nadder decided it would be a good idea to buck me off. I stand up and brush myself off, the grass coming up to my shins.
I haven't quit explored this whole island. I think I really should get around to that.
The dragons all surround me, there's no way of escape.
"H-How will this work?" I stutter.
"We will fight. " Came to simple, monotone reply.
Not again! I already had to do this at Dragon Training!
First, probably trying to start easy, is the Gronkle. The dragon swallows some rocks, growls and fires at me. I swerve to the side with a yell of surprise.
Okay, Hiccup, think............Shot limit is six and...I don't have anything to defend myself with. Not that I have any intention of harming the dragons. My mind races as I scurry around the place, dodging blasts.
I do, however, spot a branch...it's a good, decent size.
Don't judge me I can use it!
The Gronkle fires again so I duck and make my way to the stick, running. The dragon fires and it hits the tree, knocking the half hanging branch off completely.
Yes!
I snatch the stick off the ground, clutching it. I take a breath in, and then I approach the dragon nervously, and we end up in another clearing.
Dragon nip! I realise with a small smile.
The dragon has its eyes on me, and its flying so its not touching the grass, so I am pretty sure it hasn't noticed.
I grab a handful of the stuff and throw it up into the air. I hit it with my new stick and it sprays over the dragon. It drops down in pure bliss, tongue sticking out.
Yes! I took it down safely, didn't get hurt, and didn't hurt it!
I back slowly back into the clearing and look around nervously.
They call THIS training?! Ugh I swear they're as bad as Gobber.
I see the Nadder come at me, and I move just in time to dodge a series of spikes, blocking myself with the stick to avoid being decapitated.
Okay, think, think, think, think, think. Find the blind spot. Then find the sweet spot.
I dodge some dragon fire, just in time. The Nadder approaches me and I move into her blind spot, swerving with her head so she doesn't see me.
Here goes...
I scratch her neck and find her sweet spot just bellow her jaw.
She drops down with a satisfied grunt and I stand back, breathing heavily as I set a hand on her nose to comfort her.
"Okay, not too ..!" the Nightmare snarls. "But it won't work against me!"
I move back and the Monstrous Nightmare confidently fires at me. I yelp and look around me, I see a rock. I run towards it and duck behind, a split second slower and I'd be fried.
Think, Hiccup, think.
I peek out to look for the Nightmare.
Never tamed a Monstrous Nightmare before...
The dragon fires again and I duck down with a cry of fear and surprise.
Aww come on! You've trained a freaking Night Fury! Surly you can manage this!
I take a deep breath, and edge out of the cover.
Umm.....lets see, Its fire! It needs to use it up!
"H-Hey, big boy! Come..come get me!" I shout hesitantly before taking off.
The dragon roars in anger and takes off after me. The dragon fires and I duck behind a tree just in time. Fire melts the grass, rocks and dirt where I just was.
That was close. Too close.
I run off and it follows me, angry.
Hopefully it will light itself on fire to use up more of it.
"Ha! Missed!" I taunt and that hits the spot.
Please don't kill me.
The dragon roars and its figure lights on fire from snout to tail.
"Pesky Viking!"
+++
Guess what? Its been five minutes and I'm not dead! Hooray! Oh, and it must be my lucky day because he's just ran out of fire.
I walk towards him.
"Whoa! Easy." I sooth, keeping low to the ground, I dodge a tail whack as the dragon hisses at me.
"I'm not a Viking. I'm not one of them!" I say, swapping between languages and dropping the stick.
The dragon stops growling and eyes me, calming down but is confused and wary.
"I don't want to fight you!" I assure him, moving closer.
"I am a friend." I exclaim, before holding out my hand and turning my head away like I did with Toothless.
"I PROMISE....." I murmur.
Seconds later a scaly snout touches into my hand, quicker than it took Toothless to.
I turn to see the large dragon as he pulls away. I smile at the powerful panting creature, looking at me curiously.
It worked!
"See?!" I exclaim, patting his face softly. His eyes are big and friendly. "That's much better, isn't it boy!"
"What...where.... am I! Oh, no. That stupid pesky .... ..... ..... Queen!"
"Go. Just go, boy. Get out of here!" I whisper yell. He nudges me in gratitude and then flies off as fast as he can go.
I turn to the Nadder.
+++ +(five minuets later.)+ +++
"Thank you. Now go, be free!" I whisper to the Nadder. "Fly as far as you can and never come back!" She purrs and nudges me in thanks and flies off. She just dropped me back near the cave. I had grabbed the stick because I think it might make a good spear or a staff. I think a spear would be useful for now when it comes to fishing.....or a Spear Staff.
The spear could come out the end by a trigger and I could have a machette on the under side. It could split it in two and.....lets not get ahead of myself. I don't have the equipment to make that.
I look up to realise I'm not outside of the cave, I'm actually down on the beach. To get to the cave is a cliff with a few rocky edges.
Oh, great, just perfect.
I guess I'm just going to have to make my way up to the cave entrance by climbing the cliff. Lovely.
I see the lowest ledge so I go over to it, I jump but fall short. I groan, I despise being short.
I keep trying for a few minutes. After that I stop, huffing.
Wait! I've got it! Maybe I need a run up!
So I back up to the waters edge and rub my hands together, eyeing the small ledge with a bit of grass growing from it. I nod to myself and then start running, my feet pound against the earth rapidly, so I'm there before I know it. As I run I take a leap, my fingers catching the edge. I cheer happily, but then slip and fall back down to the ground.
I grumble to myself angrily as I walk along the beach, looking for the long way up.
++++
I've been walking for ages, maybe about an hour, and finally I find a small animal track that should lead in the general direction of the cave, so I follow it in the hopes that I'm correct.
After about half an hour of walking, the surroundings get more clearer. I let out a breath of relief as I recognise a pile of boulders that I know some resident Gronkles like to chew on, and I know I'm getting close.
And yes, I still have my stick. I think it'll be useful. And if not a spear, then it'll be good for cooking fish, so there's that.
I push aside a branch lazily, and glance up. A grin spreads across my face as I see the cave entrance not face away.
I run over, and make my way into the cave. "Toothless?" I call into the darkness.
No response.
He must be still over at the nest.
I walk in and sit down on a little natural rock ledge, next to me is the basket. I take out some bread and eat a bit of it.
First three dragons, down.
I wonder when Toothless will be back.....when the next raid will be.... WHERE it will be ....
I pop a bit of bread in my mouth, chewing quietly as I think.
Wonder when this mess will be over...
Wonder how berks going.
Never mind. They don't care. I have Toothless and that's all that natters.
Gobber's POV (for like the first time EVER folks🤭🙀)
I hum quietly to myself as I bang at a sword, pausing to wipe some sweat off my head. I glance at the pile of swords and axes and other such viking-y weapons that are yet to be attended to.
Why is this talking so long?! I complain to myself as I set the sword aside and grab an axe, starting to work on that. Realisation hits me like a fifty foot tall wall I'd probably name Greta. Oh. It's because Hiccup isn't here....
I sigh to myself, putting the weapon down and moving towards the back room.
Hiccup loved this room. I built it for him when he was four—Stoick was always so busy with chiefing he never had time for his son. Damn Hiccup was such an annoying little thing. Always asking questions, breaking stuff, building stuff...helping to fix stuff...helping me improve the weapons. By the time he was eight he was making swords. Practically running the forge. And what did he get in return?!
I mean. He did do the unthinkable. The unforgivable. He befriended a dragon. Mans enemy. And not just a dragon. A Night Fury. And even worse. He lied about it! He fooled everyone into thinking he was becoming a..a hero. I was so proud of him. But then...
Well, everything took a dark turn. Stoick did something I thought he'd never do. But Hiccup, Well, He deserved it! He deserved to make himself happy because no one else would.
I sigh, looking around one more time at the room covered in paper and demo models of inventions I didn't let him use, before walking out and closing the door behind me.
I miss the lad. And I know despite his coldness, Stoick is deeply hurt. And missing his son too. The last thing he had left of Valka.
But you know what?! Good on Hiccup. He stood up for himself for, Like, the first time ever. I just wish he did it another way. He was really good company. We have the same sense oh humour. No one else gets my amazing jokes.
Hiccup's POV
It's been an hour since I got back so I decide to craft a spear out of my stick.
For now I'm just going to make the end really pointy with my knife until I can either forge a proper metal spear head (it's be better since It'll be able to pierce things like fish more easier) or give up my knife.
I grab my knife out and start to sharpen the end of the stick.
After maybe an hour I've made it as sharp as I possibly can. I lean my spear up against the side. It's not going to do much but at least it makes me feel a little better. It's a thick bit of wood though, so it was harder to carve but it won't break so easily.
+++++(Sorry for all the time skips.)+++++
I hear a Night Fury call and immediately smile in relief when I see Toothless walk into the cave.
"I'm back. No 'enemy' sightings." Toothless calls as he strolls in, looking around.
He spots me and smiles.
How'd he get up so quickly, though? It took me like an hour to go the long way, and its not like he could of sacked the cliff quietly oh! it's a VERY tall cliff. Wait he's not wet? I'm confused.
"Hey bud!" I call down to him. He jumps off a wall and onto a large rock. He gets to me very quickly.....then knocks me over and licks me.
"Hahaha-aww Toothless! Yuck!" I laugh.
"Missed ya!" He says.
"Missed you too, bud!" I reply, wiping slobber of of my face and flinging it on the rock next to me.
"So, What did you get up to?" He asks.
"Oh, you would not believe-" I'm cut off.
"ATTENTION ...., PREPARE TO RAID! BE READY!"
( .... in this case =TERMITES.)
Gee its night already?! And how the heck did I hear her from HERE?! It makes no sense! I'm a Viking! Well, okay, not a Viking, but I am a human! I don't understand it! She mind controls! she speaks within the mind! So why do I hear her?!
Toothless is up straight and his ear lobes vibrate. He's distant;—paying attention. His eyes go split for a few seconds, before they return to their normal state.
It makes no sense! How could I hear her?!
Toothless looks at me and gestures to his saddle. I grab my spear, nervously climb up onto Toothless, and open his tail. He flies us out of the cave, and to the queens nest in a matter of minutes. We fly though a tunnel into the depths of the volcano where the best lies.
Toothless' POV.
I fly Hiccup and I down to the lowest ledge and await the queens order, nervously shifting my weight and clawing at the rock.
An eery owl like call floats through the atmosphere, only audible to us Dragons. My ear lobes vibrate and I concentrate on resisting her control.
You are not controlling me ANY MORE!
But I do accidentally let her a little termite brain in long enough, so I now know where to go, lead by instincts, before I manage to fight off the clouded feeling over my mind almost immediately—closing off her access. The only reason I can fight her off is because Hiccup's here, and so with his comforting presence I have strength. Ha. A human giving me strength. Never would of saw it coming.
Berk. Its Berk.
Oh, this will be interesting.
The call stops (I huff in relief) and a whole bunch of the dragons in the nest take off as a buzzing swarm of bodies, wings, tails and teeth. Hiccup flicks the contraption he created so that the fake tail fin opens, and I bunch my muscles and take off powerfully, following a Nadder through the tunnels.
Berk, here we come.

Thanks for reading.
Sorry this chapter was a bit (a lot) boring.
Suggestions?
So how many people have the same problem of me? Like, your siblings or even your friends (though for me it's mainly siblings) keep going off at you and starting random fights, especially about you liking Httyd. Bish no body should ever be told they're too old for Httyd! Makes me furious. Httyd is for anyone and everyone...except people like my siblings who keep complaining about me liking it. It's not like I force them to like it 😂. Sorry this was a little rant, but I just wanna her that out there lol and see how many others have the same problem.
"You just gestured to all of me." Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third💓.
