Chapter 16: unfinished sentences and a runaway viking with a harness
HICCUPS POV.
+time skip! +
After I finish I head into the forest, already wearing my harness and holding Toothless' saddle improvements securely bundled up in my hands. I had to be careful going through the village, especially because news of my 'success' has gone through the village like a plague. I have to be really careful from now on. I can't afford to slip up.
Thwack!
Jeez who's dying?
Smack!
Actually.... I don't wanna know.
Thwack!
I turn to see Astrid aiming at me with her axe, ready to throw.
I'm not a tree, Astrid!
I awkwardly run off, not uttering a word.
I recon she's gonna follow me. I mean, I would, if I was her and caught me just standing there with something weird in my hands then I would come after me, too.... that makes sense, right?!
Just in case I'm right, I hide behind a big rock for at least a minuet, listening.
I hear her huff and footsteps leading away. Oh, I've lost her.
Well..... I guess that would be more like SHE lost HERSELF. Oh well, Thank Thor for that!
I make it to The Cove with no more problems but I do start to rant to myself. "Your stupid, Hiccup. Your a useless. Bla, bla, bla. Well you know what? I don't care anymore!" I complain as I walk in. "They're all rock headed idiots anyway." I grumble.
"I mean, I've proven myself, well at least tried to, over and over again! This whole place is messed up. And Astrid, sure she gets mad when I accidentally succes in Training, But I don't really understand what her problem is. It's not like I can win it, and also it's not like she's skilled a dragon. Heh, and she calls herself a dragon killer. At least I'm honest about not being able to kill dragons!" I add. "To be honest, no one here....except maybe Gobber and of course Astrid since I like her.... are worth my time."
----------Toothless' POV---------------
OH, so THAT'S his name! Ha we both have stupid names! Looks like he's going on a bit of a rant, though. How long will he go on?
-----------Hiccup's POV--------------
"And Snotlout. I mean, *scoffs* wh-who does he think he is?! He can't force me to tell him anything! Not like his tiny brain would be able to comprehend my vocabulary, anyway." I ramble. "But whatever. Why should I threat over them?" I add.
I sit down the harness and look around for Toothless. He sees me and drops down from the tree branch he was sitting on. He comes up to me and I rub his head in greeting.
"Lets practice with the tail, yeah bud?!" I say and he coos at me, agreeing. I fit the saddle improvements on and nod at my work. Toothless turns his head to look at it. He nods, seemingly approving it as well.
++++
Toothless and I are practicing to change the tail position with my foot. I close the tail and write/draw the position.
Because I decided I might need my hands free, so why not use my foot?
I open the tail to a new position when the rope that holds us to the ground snaps, due to a big gust of wind, and we fly backwards. We get up and I notice that it has bent the safety hook. I tug on the hook, but it's obvious.
"Oh, great!" I say sarcastically. We're stuck together.
Okay. So I have no tools here. I think we're just gonna have to go to the forge. That's just perfect.
"C'mon bud, let's go to the forge and fix this problem!" I say and we both leave the cove. "Try not to get too distracted!"
+++
I act casual, Toothless hidden, as a viking passes by. It's become Night quickly: Toothless thought it would be a good idea to chase a rabbit, attempt to climb a tree and then investigate a hole........silly reptile.
Well, I guess it IS better to go at night, anyway. That way we won't be easily seen.
"Hiccup." the Viking greets, carrying a torch. I nod, acting casual.
I wait to the coast is clear before leading Toothless away. We emerge forward and Toothless walks right, the direction of the Viking. I pull on the lead and walk him left.
I pull Toothless into the forge and rummage for the tool I need. Toothless gets excited in the new environment and throws a bucket. I wince.
I hope that didn't attract attention.
"Hiccup? Are you in there?"
Damn it.
I burst out the doors, just managing to put on my apron to cover up the belt that has me still attached to Toothless. I managed to fix the permanent attachment problem... almost. We're attached still, but not permanently since I managed to bend the safety hook back into place. All I need to do now is unclip the hook and we'll be detached.
Just act natural Hiccup. You did it before!
"Astrid. Hey! Uh, it's you.....Hi, Astrid. Hi, Astrid. Hi, Astrid!" I ramble.
Yeah....casual.
"I normally don't care what people do, but you're acting weird." She says. I chuckle nervously. "Well, weirder. What exactly were you doing in there?" Astrid says.
The cord shifts and I chuckle nervously.
"Oh, y-you know, I-inventing......uh, um, inventing stuff!" I say, before being pulled through the doors.
On the way I chuck the toll under the desk, pull off my apron, and usher Toothless out the back. We run around the right side quickly and quietly, becoming behind Astrid from a distance.
We leap off before Astrid can see us, running into the darkness.
(TIME SKIP--MORNING.)
Astrid's P.O.V
I see that everyone is back from the raid, as a boat sails in with a hole in the side of it and the mask on a lean with the sail torn.
I can't stop thinking about last night.
What was Hiccup doing? Why was he acting so weird? Where did he go?
I think I need to talk to Stoick about this....
Now may be my chance.
I spot chief Stoick walking along a path.
There he is!
I quickly run up to him. "Hi, chief. Umm, can I talk with you?" I ask him, he was walking with Gobber until they parted ways.
"Yes, Astrid? Have away!" He says, but seems a little distracted mentally.
Have I caught him in a bad time? I mean, by the looks of it they didn't find the nest. But this is worth a shot, I need to tell Stoick now before things get out of hand.
"Well, umm, I'm sure you've heard already, about Hiccup doing.....good....in training and I just wanted to say that...uh.."
"Yeah, I heard that! He's doing great.... surprisingly. Now, what is it lass?" he asks, now I've got his full attention (I think).
"Well....I-I think something's going on. I caught him in the forge late at night and when I spoke with him he was acting, I don't know, weirder then usual. He disappeared without a trace. Then, the other day, I caught him with something I think was made of leather in his hands in the forest. He ran away and I unfortunately lost him, but I think I know the direction he went..." I exclaim.
"Oh...so, you think he might be doing something stupid? Maybe cheating training?" he questions, rubbing his beard thoughtfully.
"I believe so, Sir." I answer.
He was silent for a moment. "How can someone cheat trying, though? We'll just have to keep an eye on him, then. I shall have a word with him later."
Is that all? I thought he'd do something else. By the looks of it I might just have to take matters into my own hands. Unlike others, I won't hesitate to bring him down. That boy doesn't deserve to win training, ESPECIALLY if he's cheating! Either way, I will never hesitate to take that little runt down. Watch out Hiccup, I'm watching you.
