Chapter 10: Be faster then the Nadder. Good luck, mate.
Hiccups POV.
Today, it appears, in Dragon Training we are facing the Nadder.
Lucky us.
"You know, I just happened to notice the book had nothing on Night Furies. Is there another book? Or a....sequel? Maybe a little Night Fury pamphlet?" I ask Gobber.
The Nadder fires at me. I dodge, crying out in surprise as the small axe I was carrying no longer has a head.
"Ah!" I look forward to see the Nadder drop down from a wall and stalk up towards me. I run to my right.
"Focus, Hiccup! You're not even trying!" Gobber exclaims.
But you didn't answer my question!
I look behind and above me to see the Nadder looking down at me from on top of a wall.
Oh. Crap.
Gobber now turns to the others.
"Today is all about ATTACK! Nadders are quick and light on their feet! Your job is to be quicker and lighter!" Gobber says and I run off. The Nadder jumps from wall to wall but luckily I loose it.
How am I supposed to do that, Gobber?!
I hear a sound, the Nadder shooting spines, and then I hear "AAAAH! I'm really beginning to question your teaching methods!" From Fishlegs.
Yeah, well Fishlegs, I have ever since he "introduced" me to the forge! Consider yourself lucky. I mean you already are, hanging with THEM and not your best friend...sorry, EX best friend.
Gobber picks his teeth as if bored. "Look for its blind spot. Every dragon has one. Find it, hide in it, and strike!" He says.
you're a freaking maniac Gobber! Why aren't you helping us more than just sitting up there, picking your teeth and saying that?
I run a corner and the twins approach from another direction. I spin around to see them run straight into the Nadder.
"Ugh. Do you ever bathe?" Ruff gags as they both move with the Nadder head.
"If you don't like it, why don't you get your own blind spot." Is what Tuff tells his sister after they both bump into each other.
Ooh here we go.
"How 'bout I give you one!" Ruffnut says as they turn and face each other, ramming her head into his. He rams back.
The Nadder squarks and the twins turn, just managing to dodge the fire that the Nadder sends their way.
Gobber chuckles, leaning on the bars. He's above in this training, not even in the ring with us. "Blind spot, yes. Deaf spot? Not so much. Heh, heh, heh."
I stop and face him, looking up.
"He-hey, so how would one sneak up on a Night Fury?" I ask, trying to be up front.
"No one's ever met one and lived to tell the tale. NOW, GET IN THERE!" Gobber snaps.
Except me. Yet I'm not telling anyone. When I decided this? I have no clue.
"I know, I know, but hypothetically--" I try, backing up.
Astrid whispers to me.
"Hiccup! Get down!" she says. She is with Snotlout.
Astrid peaks her head around then silently counts. She does this cool rolling thing when the shield is behind you as you roll. She uses it to sneak past an opening where the Nadder could see her. Snotlout goes after her, doing the same.
I try to do it too but the shield makes it difficult. I fall over. The Nadder notices and I scramble to get up and I run forward, just dodging a bite from the dragon.
The dragon disappears and I hear:
"Watch out, babe. I'll take care of this!"
"Hey!"
I hear a clang.
"The sun was in my eyes, Astrid! What do you want me to do, block out the sun? I could do that but I don't have time right now!"
"They probably take the daytime off. You know, like a cat. Ha-Has anyone ever seen one napping?" I suggest up to Gobber, stopping for another chat, like my life isn't in danger.
"Hiccup!" Gobber says. I hear crashing and I see to late that Astrid is jumping from wall to wall as the Nadder chases her.
She jumps off the last wall. "HICCUP!" She shouts. Falling right onto me.
I hear the twins teasing in the background.
"Ooh, love on the battlefield!" I hear Tuffnut say.
"She could do better!" I also hear Ruffnut exclaim.
"Just... let me... why don't you..." I try to get out of this awkward, sticky mess.
Astrid stands up.
The dragon comes closer, so Astrid places her foot on my face and yanks her axe, ending up with my shield as well, as it is embedded in their pretty hard, then she swings it at the poor Nadder.
"Well done, Astrid!" Gobber congratulates.
Oh, so no congratulations on staying alive for hiccup?! Or no sorry for the pain I just caused you from Astrid?
Astrid stalks up to me, axe in hand. The shield was ripped off it in the collision.
"Is this some kind of a joke to you?! Our parents' war is about to become ours! Figure out which side you're on!" she exclaims, pointing her axe at me threateningly.
Wow. I accepted you apology.
"What if I told you, I don't care!" I mumble under my breath after she stalks off.
I'm going back there.
+++
I approach the cove, several minuets later. I managed to find a ground entrance to it. It's only a thin trail, rocks sticking out of both sides, but it works.
I am armed with a shield, I stayed back after training and grabbed one, okay fine, so I stole it from the killing arena. I'm accompanied as well by the most deadliest weapon of all. A fish.
Oohh, someone in this situation won't stand a chance!
