16. Snuggles

Ever since they escaped from the compound and went back to the farm, everything has been super awkward.
Nobody besides the Greene family and that annoying kid named Carl has spoken to her. She feels like nobody wants her here.

So today, Nell grabs her knife and journeys back into the woods. Not to run away though, she learned her lesson from that.

A couple days ago, she set up an animal trap— the one she learned at the compound, and she was going to go see if she caught anything.

She sneaks out of Hershel's farmhouse, which wasn't very difficult because nobody pays attention to her anyway.

The sun is starting to set, so she'd have to hurry up.
Nell tightens her grip around the base of her knife as she enters the woods.
For some reason, there seemed to be a lot more walkers at nighttime.

Walkers.
That's what everyone at the farm calls them. Nell figures it makes more sense than "brain-munchers", so she started calling them "walkers" too.

A hideous walker slowly emerges from the trees, it's decaying mouth snapping at Nell.
Her heart starts pounding like a drum and she uses all her strength to quickly lunge toward the monster, remembering what she had learned from the compound.

Her fingers clench the top of it's disgusting head to bring it down to her level. In her other hand, she lifts her knife high and drives it through the walker's forehead.
The blade pierces through the rotting flesh and sinks deep into it's skull.
The walker suddenly stops trying to rip Nell's face off as it collapses to the ground.

Once Nell sees that the walker is dead— well, dead for the second time, she sighs in relief and runs her hand through her messy hair.

She continues through the woods, looking for two things:

The trap she set up a couple days ago.

And Snuggles the bunny.

Nell can't believe she lost snuggles, especially since she promised Ollie that she would take care of him.

Promises are the one thing that Nell has left of Ollie.
And once she breaks it, he's gone forever.

Promises are one of the only things left of value in a world like this. Not even money matters anymore.
Once you decide that breaking one promise is okay, then your humanity is dead.
Just as dead as the walker she killed.

So, Nell is determined to find Snuggles the bunny.

As Nell approaches the trap she set up, she sees another walker.

Shit.

The walker is crouched down at her trap, most likely eating whatever it is that she caught.
Nell takes out her knife again, this time her knife is stained with walker blood.
She slowly walks towards the walker, her knife held high.

The walker suddenly spins around and takes out a
.....crossbow?

Nell drops her weapon as soon as she realizes that the walker was in fact, not a walker.
She recognizes the man from the farmhouse.
Daryl?

Daryl drops his weapon too once he lays eyes on the girl in front of him.

"The hell ya doin' out here all alone?!" Daryl shouts.

Nell doesn't say a word— she knows better than to speak when someone is mad at her.
She doesn't want to be punished.

Nell just stands there, slightly shaking in fear.

"Do ya even speak, girl?" Daryl says, picking up the squirrel that was in the trap.

"That's mine." Nell says, acknowledging the squirrel in his hands.

It was hers.
She made the trap, she caught the squirrel— it was hers.

"Yer the one who made the trap?" Daryl asks. "That trap's pretty advanced, I'm surprised ya even knew how to set it up."

"My daddy taught me." Nell says. She didn't want to know how to make a trap, her dad forced her.
She must always listen to her dad or else she'd get punished.

"Hmm.." Daryl mumbles.
He remembers the day he found her in the woods. The poor little girl passed out behind a tree, bleeding out. She used her shirt to stop the bleeding, exposing her back and the scars scattered across her body.

Daryl didn't know what to do about it. Well, there wasn't much he could do.
Her dad wasn't with her, so that means he is probably dead.
Her dad probably messed her up in the head, Daryl knew that. He remembered all the terrible, yet confusing moments in his childhood. This girl is probably going through the same.

"What are you doin' out here?" Nell asks, reflecting his question from before.

"Nothin'." Daryl says.
There is a moment of silence.
Nell and Daryl both awkwardly look at each other until Daryl reaches into the dirty backpack on his back.

"Well— actually, I found this." Daryl grumbles and holds out a bunny stained with dirt and other things.

Snuggles!

Nell's eyes widen as she sprints to grab Snuggles out of Daryl's hands.
Nell checks the bunny for any rips or tears, lifting up it's ears and checking under it's arms.
The bunny is a filthy mess, but it is still in one piece.

"How—" Nell begins to say but gets cut off by Daryl.

"I was out huntin'. Came across that and remembered how yer cryin' kept me up all night." Daryl mumbles, trying to hide the fact that he just felt bad for the girl.

"Oh. Well.. thanks." Nell says, holding Snuggles close to her chest.

"Ya better get back to the farm, sun's settin'." Daryl says, nodding up at the sky.

"Yeah..." She says, gives the man the slightest smile she could manage, and pivots around on her foot, making her way back to the farmhouse.

When Nell makes it back to the farmhouse, to her surprise she sees everyone outside running towards a car that just pulled up.
Nell found this really strange because it's nighttime.

She quietly joins the group that is now circled around the car, not wanting anyone to know she was out in the woods alone at night.
Lori hops out of the car with her hand pressed against her forehead. She looks sick.
Shane gets out right after her.

"Oh my god, are you alright? What happened?" Andrea asks Lori, comforting her.

"I was in an accident, I'm fine, I really am." She says.

Accident? Where did she go?

Nell barely knew anything about what goes on around the farm.
All she knew was Rick went into town with a couple people and everyone started to worry because they haven't returned.

"Where's Rick?" Lori asks, looking around at the people surrounding her, including Nell.

Everyone stays silent which makes Lori's face twist in concern.
"They're not back?" She asks. "Where are they?"
This time she looks to Shane.
Shane is one of those people that Nell tries her best to stay away from. He acts like her dad more than anyone else.

"Look, I had to get you back here." Shane says.
Silence once again.

"You asshole." Lori says, moving closer to Shane. "He's my husband!!"
Lori grabs onto Shane like she's about to fight him.
Nell knows it wouldn't be smart to try and fight Shane— he is big and strong, a lot stronger than Lori.

"Lori, I will go after him! I will find him!!" Shane shouts, and grabs on to Lori to calm her down. "Now look, first things first I gotta— I gotta look after you. I gotta make sure the baby's all right, okay?"

Baby?! Lori's pregnant?

Who would ever get pregnant in a world like this?

Nell assumes that nobody else knew this either, because everyone stares at Lori in disbelief.

"Your having a baby?" Carl asks, breaking the silence. "Why didn't you tell me?"

Nell quickly found out that Lori is Carl's mom. Carl constantly runs around the farm screaming "Mom!!" for stupid reasons like "Nell punched me!!"
You couldn't blame her for punching him, he is always getting on her nerves.

Nell is slightly jealous of Carl though. He has his entire family alive with him at the farmhouse and she has no one.
And now he is going to be a big brother.

Lori looks around, not knowing what to say to Carl.
"Come on. Let's make sure your all right." Dale says, waving Lori over.
Lori and most of the people who were outside follow Dale back into the farmhouse.
Shane stays back, leaning against the car.

Nell slowly follows the group into the house, lingering behind because she doesn't want to be noticed.
