Chapter 51

Author's Note:

Before we go right into the chapter I want to apologize for the exceptionally long hiatus.  At one point I had a huge (and I mean huge) writer's block.  Then from that to the next I decided that I wanted to get a good jump start before posting to Wattpad.  I can proudly say that I have just finished Chapter 60!

From here on out I should be updating the first Friday of the month.  (Next month being one of the few exceptions because holidays are sure to slow me down a bit.)  If I get even further ahead I will go back to updating twice a month (the first and third Friday).  So cross fingers, and hope that I can keep the creative juices flowing.

Also, since it has been so long I first wanted to suggest that you get  reacquainted with the story by reading it again from the beginning.  If you decide against going that far I at least wanted to remind you of who the OC characters are that appear in this chapter.  (feel free to skip to the page break if you don't need the following reminder)

Akiyama Katsuo - Studied psychology but doesn't have the degree to practice.  He tends to work in the orphanage and tries to keep up to date records on the kids in residence.  He acts as a counselor for those kids in question.  He looks kind of like Yukio from Blue Exorcist (reason image is included) except his eyes are a bold vibrant viridian green.

Hashimoto Daichi - His psychic ability is that he can sense other psychics in about a twenty mile (32 km) radius.  He is exceptionally flamboyant.  (Partially because he feels he has to be since he's gay.)

Fuuko Atsuko - The empath of the team.  Out of all my OCs she probably has the biggest role since I'm shipping her off with Gene!  :) (at least for now...could this change in the future???)

Kimura Akane - My newest OC in the story.  Her ability is called psychometabolism but she also almost has a pschokinetic tie in.  Pulling a quote directly from my story to help explain.  "Your ability is based on a body's metabolism. I am guessing you don't have to eat much to fill full. Also, that you rarely ever get sick, and when you do it lasts for only a day or a few hours. I also imagine that once you feel rested those bruises on your body will disappear. That power is psychometabolism, but somehow you were also able to focus it on another. It is like you combined your psychometabolism with a psychokinetic ability. The first is quite rare. The second I am not sure I have heard of."

Katsuo took a moment to clean the specks from his glasses before looking through the window of his office. He may have had a pile of disorganized files on his desk that he needed to go through, but he still wanted to look out the window and appreciate the early morning sunshine that had barely crept over the horizon. He was thankful that the rain the meteorologists had predicted earlier in the week for Wednesday morning had been wrong, or at least inaccurate about the time that the rain would arrive.

He tucked the polishing cloth in his jacket pocket, and sat his glasses back on the tip of his nose. He pivoted his frame and openly glared at the stack of file folders sitting there. He had been putting them off too long, and now they were almost stacked like a wobbly Jenga tower about to fall over. Before he could inch his way back over to his desk Daichi walked in. No matter what time of day it was the sun always seemed to shine just right and reflect off the blonde highlights in his hair and the effect always set Katsuo on edge. Daichi hadn't caught on to Katsuo's sexual preference yet, and Katsuo was mostly thankful for that. Well, except when the attractive assistant flamboyantly flirted with every other male in his presence.

Since Katsuo studied psychology he had worked out that while Daichi was definitely a positive person in all ways possible a lot of that personality was a way for him to control others' reactions to him. If he put forward first that he was gay, and okay with the fact, then others would be less likely to react in a way that he didn't expect.

Now the assistant was smirking and handing a coffee cup Katsuo's way. The smirk made Katsuo inwardly flinch. On the outside he didn't show this though. He took a sip of his coffee and continued to attempt to portray indifference. The coffee cup in front of his face helped. He thanked Daichi who smiled at him happily and sat himself on top of Katsuo's desk. Or more accurately directly on top of the leaning tower of files. He mentally groaned at the conflicting emotions that scattered in his brain. On one side Daichi looked incredibly adorable perched there on his desk. It made him want to pull the man toward him and show him the feelings he had locked away deep inside for years now. On the other hand it made him annoyed that his papers would no doubt be creased as a result of Daichi's carelessness.

Daichi knew all about the files that lay beneath his derriere. He intentionally perched on the desk. Katsuo took things too seriously and needed to let a little fun in his life. So, Daichi took it upon himself to disrupt his morning with levity and gossip. "Did you hear that Mai and Dr. Davis supposedly had some smoking hot shared sex dream? I guess it happened a few nights ago. But I overheard Ayako talking to Monk about it yesterday."

Katsuo knew all about the shared dream. He hadn't heard said nature of the dream but because of the veiled passion between the two involved if it were indeed a sex dream he wouldn't be surprised. He really wanted to pretend to go through his files and ignore Daichi's presence but because his presence was all over his files he couldn't do that. He pinched his nose and squinted his eyes as if a migraine were making itself known. "You are sharing this with me because?"

"Come on. We all love Mai, and want her to get her fairytale ending. I just wanted to share that it looks like things may be heading that way for her. Or at the very least she will end up with a Happy Ending."

Katsuo rolled his eyes at the double entendre but had to admit that Daich wasn't inaccurate regarding the rest of his hypothesis. Most of the newer members of the group hadn't known everything there was to know about the elusive Dr. Davis. They only know that she didn't date and didn't want to. Atsuko was probably the only member of the new staff that knew the truth, and that was probably partially because of her empathic abilities. "Yes, but perhaps spreading gossip about sex dreams is going a tad too far."

"Hmm. I don't know. Maybe." Daichi showed indifference but inwardly he did agree that maybe sharing the possibility that they were having shared sex dreams was going a bit too far. His Happy Ending comment at the very least was definitely past the point of being proper, rather than openly admitting his comment was inappropriate he continued on with the other bit of gossip he had. "Anyway, in other news, did you hear that Dr. Davis is going to be here to train with Akane today?"

Katsuo took a sip of his coffee and nodded. "Yes, and Gene is supposed to be training with Atsuko."

Daichi's response was to wiggle his eyebrows suggestively and say, "Do you really think those two are going to get much training done?"

Katsuo couldn't quite contain the smirk at that question. It was obvious those two were hot for each other the moment they laid eyes on each other. So while Mai and Dr. Davis had a slow burning relationship, Atsuko and Gene had been rapidly moving to a heated blazing bonfire that was nearly out of control. Instead of commenting though he indicated his files. "You do realize you are wrinkling my important case work. Don't you?"

Daichi blinked, in an effort to exude innocence, "I am?" He looked down. "Oh, so I am."

Katsuo of course expected him to move but wasn't all that surprised when he grinned and retained his perch. "I would really like to get to work on those files. I have been putting them off for too long as it is."

"But you were in here until one in the morning. Are you telling me you made no progress last night?"

"I appreciate that you care, Daichi. I do. But as I said I would really like to get back to work."

Daichi continued to rattle on about more office gossip. "John and Akane seemed to be forming a tight friendship. I'm not sure if there is a romance blooming there or not. But the two do look awfully cute together."

Blood pounded in Katsuo's ears. Office romances are a bad idea. A very bad idea. This was his mantra when he found himself lost in Daichi's vibrant blue eyes, or when those pesky rays of sun hit his hair just right. He had an extremely bad impulse that he was fighting the temptation of acting on. But seeing as Daichi was deflecting and refusing to move he had few options to get the attractive assistant to stop his rant.

So, as Daichi continued to blather on about the others in the office Katsuo drew closer. He put his coffee cup on the only clean edge available of his desk and breached Daichi's personal bubble. His hands molded around the other man's jean encased thighs and pulled him close. Between one word and the next Katsuo caught Daichi's mouth with his own and unleashed all the hidden heat he had for the other male.

Once Katsuo pulled away Daichi began stuttering. "Good, that managed to shut you up. Now could you kindly hop down from my desk and go to your own duties? I am sure you have something waiting at your own desk you can busy yourself with."

"You...you kissed me to shut me up?" Daichi was more confused than offended.

"Among other things, but this isn't the time or place to hash that out. Get down please." Perhaps he revealed more than he intended but the statement did get the other to move.

"I...How could my gaydar not have gone off with you?" Daichi asked before leaving the room.

Katsuo pretended to flip through one of the files so he wouldn't look directly at Daichi. "Maybe because I'm not gay. I'm attracted to whom I am attracted to. Gender doesn't factor in to my attraction."

Daichi knew that was the end of the conversation for now. But he couldn't stop blinking as he walked out of the office. He was completely blindsided by this new piece of information. He had openly flirted with him when they both first met. But he hadn't flirted back. No, Katsuo only reacted coldly to him at first. But did this mean that he had been attracted to him this whole time? Damn. Well at least now he could go back to fantasizing about the nerdy hottie and feel less shame about doing so. Truth be told Katsuo's big green eyes had come up quite often in Daichi's fantasies.

Why hadn't he called yesterday? Was he regretting that dream, and the truth I shared with him? Is he trying to insert an emotional gap between us? Mai was on the front desk early in the morning, and she was pacing as she waited for Naru and Gene's arrival. She didn't have a precise time on when they would arrive but she knew her stoic boyfriend wouldn't want to waste the day.

Boyfriend? Can I really call him that? The term almost seems too mundane for the feelings I have for him. If not boyfriend than what? She paused to think over it for a second. Lover? Mai's cheeks tainted with the additional meaning behind that term. Unfortunately for her, that's when the twins walked through the door.

"Good morning, Mai!" Gene engulfed her in a bear hug that almost squeezed the breath out of her. "I'm so glad you didn't have any prophetic dreams last night! I don't know about you but I had a blissful full eight hours, and I feel ready to take on the world." Mai wished she could say the same. She had stressed over the lack of contact from Naru and had barely slept a wink. That was probably the true reason that Gene was able to get a full eight hours. She wasn't about to tell him that though.

Noll pushed his brother aside so he could greet Mai properly himself. A corner of his lip turned up in his signature half smile. He leaned down and pulled her into the shelter of his arms. "Good morning, Mai."

His lips brushed hers gently in a soft peck that still managed to make butterflies flutter in Mai's stomach. "Good morning."

"Are Akane and Atsuko meeting us in the basement? That's where you said would be the best place to train. Correct?"

"Yes, the basement." Mai nodded. Her thought process was completely obliterated by that simple kiss. Once the twins were out of sight she pulled out her cell phone and called Masako. Perhaps they needed a night out.

John regretted that he was with the kids this morning. He knew that Akane was about to train with Dr. Davis, and he was exceptionally worried about it. He wasn't sure what the training would entail. But knowing Dr. Davis he wouldn't be pulling any punches.

He knew Akane was nervous herself. He had barely caught sight of her before she headed to the basement. She was wearing a long nondescript gray t-shirt over a black pair of yoga pants. Her golden brown spirals were fiercely pulled back in a high ponytail. It was the shadows and the dullness of her vibrant blue-green eyes that made John certain that she was on edge about this training session.

He hadn't had the opportunity to voice any type of encouragement. She was only walking past when he caught her in the hallway. He wished he had the moment to say good luck.
