Truth of the Battle.
May, Drew and Dawn were flying towards Kanto. They didn't really want to go, but something came up. They were needed in Pallet Town, where Gary had said he needed them. Dawn didn't seem to mind as much as they landed in front of the lab. Drew frowned.
"I have so many questions for him." May glanced at him and nodded. Dawn shrugged.
"He hasn't really said anything since Ash disappeared." Drew raised an eyebrow.
"Look who's talking."
Dawn smiled at him before knocking on the door. There was silence before the Oak opened the door. He had definitely changed since the last time they saw him, which was before they even considered the turning. He was a lot taller from before and he wore some lab clothes. He smiled at them.
"Thanks for coming. We have some things to discuss. If you guys don't mind sharing to the other side." The trio sent glances at each other before going in. The lab looked very much like it was before the turning. Gary pulled some chairs over to a table and paused. "Here."
"Thanks..." May whispered as they sat down. Dawn paused for a moment.
"Quiet much?" She glanced at the bluette as she fiddled with her fingers.
"Leave it for now, Dawn." Drew mumbled as he turned to the Oak. "What did you need to talk to us about?" Gary smiled at him.
"Well first... places. You three are the only ones that haven't done anything major in this battle." Drew paused as Dawn straightened up.
"I'm in the middle, per say. I've been working with Paul and his area to help them recover from some unfortunate events. His group is a decent group that knows what they're doing in terms of helping people." Gary nodded as May glanced at Drew.
"We've been gathering data, not for anyone in particular, of the battle. A lot of secrets emerge when you look in the right places." Gary hummed as he glanced at May.
"So basically you three are neutral." Dawn huffed.
"Only if Iris considers me still a Turner. I've grown out of that title and seen the light." Gary nodded as Drew sighed.
"We're not sure anymore. We were Turners until the Night League started making its mark. Now we have no idea what we are." May's eyes traveled up to Gary's.
"What about you? What side are you on?" She whispered, her voice barely grazing the air. Gary hummed.
"Night League's actually. I just like hearing what both sides have to say. I've sorta been the kind of person that has held the lines and kept a bond that the sides don't see. Ash is the only one that knows what I'm doing and yet no one's questioned it until now." May hummed as she looked at the ground. Drew gulped.
"If you're on the Night League's side, then what have you been doing with information that the Turners have been showing?" Gary chuckled lightly at the question.
"Well I haven't been giving them to the Night League. Nor have I given anything from the League to the Turners. Actually, almost no one but you three and Ash know that I've been talking to both sides." Drew gulped as Dawn hummed.
"Not surprising. You are the professor after your grandfather retired. And practically everyone trusts the professor." Gary smiled as May paused.
"So... you have been hiding lies?" Gary sighed.
"You could say that..." He hummed. "Now the real question is where will you two stand?" May gulped as she raised her head.
"If I knew who was in the entire Night League, then that might help me understand what I'm going into for that but I don't know..." Her voice gently skimmed that air as Drew nodded. Dawn hummed.
"Your best chance is tomorrow in Alola. The Night League is holding a regional meeting. The entire region and Night League is meeting up. Only the region and league knows, so the Turners won't see it until after the facts when it gets broadcasted. So if you two want to come with me and join the crowd, you can. Just promise not to let any details escape." May paused as Drew hummed.
"We'll be there to see the full league. I don't think we'll be able to understand a word you guys are saying in it." Dawn giggled at his words. May smiled softly as Dawn stood up.
"Well I'm needed elsewhere. See you at the meeting." The trio nodded as she left. Drew stretched as May pushed him off his chair. He yelped as Gary gulped.
"Drew, could you step outside? I need to discuss something privately with Gary." Drew paused before standing up and going outside.
"What is it, May?" Drew paused as he closed the door. What was going on? He knew why she was quiet, or at least one of the reasons. All the secrets the duo had been uncovering had been messing with her head as she tried to sort them out. He didn't know what was going on entirely. He put his ear by the door, but May was too quiet for him to hear. He huffed gently as he waited for the duo to finish. May stepped out and smiled at him.
"Ready to go?" He nodded as they took off. Drew glanced at her.
"What did you have to talk to Gary about?" She hummed softly.
"I don't want to talk about it right now."
"May, you've been talking to every professor you get a chance to. There's obviously a reason. Just tell me." May looked away.
"Not now. Alright?" He sighed.
"Fine. But I do get an explanation." She raised an eyebrow.
"You're jealous."
"Of Gary? Hell no. From what people are whispering about, he has a girlfriend. I have no fears of him trying anything." She chuckled softly as he leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Now, next stop Petalburg?" She nodded as he wrapped his arms around her and they flew south.
~!*!~
May's eyes flickered as they flew down to the area that the meeting was at. Dawn was laughing at a little exchange between Paul and Kellyn. The brunette was gripping a pole while Paul leaned against a wall. They flew down and went over.
"Jerk..." Paul smiled.
"You make it easy, Kellyn. Don't think that it's anything less."
"Paul, you know my weak points... it's not fair."
"Kellyn, this isn't about weak points. This is about how far you go. You're almost there. You have a lot more work to do, but soon you'll be able to advance." Kellyn shuddered as Dawn hummed.
"You two get inside. Kellyn, I want to speak with you afterwards."
The brunette nodded as they went inside. The duo went in and up to where everyone else was. They found seats off to the side from the large crowd and a good view of the whole league. It was shocking to see the full thing. May spotted Ash talking to Bonnie. She remembered back when she was ready to punch him in the face. That feeling was quiet as she studied the group below. They were very large for a league. She spotted Purple from the Darkseid Chain with a laptop in hand. He had pulled Paul off to the side and was having a small conversation with him. Ash joined them as they tried to discuss something. With a quick couple of words, the trio sorted out whatever problems they had and went over as the league got in their spots. Delia stood up with a smile.
"Good evening everyone! I'm glad you all could make it! So that everyone's caught up, let's get some minor introductions done. We have our three chain heads; Ash, Max, and Paul. Then we have our contest advisors; Serena and Bonnie. We have our outside representatives; Purple, Kellyn, Yellow, and Emerald. And finally we have a lovely professor that is joining us, Gary Oak." The crowd applauded as each member waved to the crowd. "Now then we will start with updating you all about certain areas. Purple?"
The purple haired boy stood up as he looked at a paper. May zoned out, but it wasn't hard to tell what they were saying. But she still had questions before she let herself pick. Dawn had said that Ash would be willing to talk to them if they stuck around after the meeting. She was planning on getting her answers. She did tell Dawn to warn Ash that she would be quiet, and she hoped the message got through.
~!*!~
After the meeting, the duo stayed by the building as people left. May looked around for the raven haired boy. She spotted him talking to Kellyn and some of the other league members that were there. Mainly the ones that were introduced. She gulped as the duo turned to them. Dawn noticed the duo and waved to them as they went over. Despite what happened years ago, Ash gave them a warm smile.
"Ah, May. Drew." They nodded to him. May could tell that the little boy she and the others pushed down had left. He had grown above her, which she saw coming. His voice was deeper, which was very noticeable. "Nice to see you around here."
"Not the kinda thing I was expecting..." Drew mumbled, which received a kick to the shin from May.
"You get a different response when you use the past the right way. I pushed down the dark past and this is where I ended up. Treat people the way you want to be treated. That will get me by even Iris if I'm lucky." May raised an eyebrow.
"I highly doubt that..." Drew grumbled, getting a giggle from the group. Ash studied the duo.
"Let's go somewhere more suited for a talk." May nodded, knowing what he meant. She was quiet, and outside was a very loud place. But she could be wrong. They followed Ash to a smaller building nearby and went inside, A table sat in the middle with some chairs. Drew chuckled.
"Is this where you hide the bodies?" Serena busted out laughing while Ash went quiet.
"I'm not answering that because I haven't killed anyone." Bonnie glanced at him.
"Hush." The group giggled as they sat down.
Ash looked May over. She had definitely grown from her smaller self. Her hair was pulled into side braids and she had a small ponytail behind with some hair drifting down her back. She wore an athletic shirt with the sleeves folded up to her shoulders. She had a pair of black leggings and brown hiking boots to finish off her outfit. Her eyes were slightly faded, but other than that she didn't look too bad.
Drew wasn't too far from her. His hair had gained a slightly deeper shade and had grown a little bit. He wore a black dress shirt with a pair of grey pants. He had a dark red and deep purple jacket on the back of his chair and he had a pair of black hiking shoes to finish the outfit. His eyes flashed lightly as he looked over the group.
Ash smiled as he spoke.
"So... what did you guys want to talk to us about?" May gulped as she got ready. She had only told Drew that he might have to repeat her questions if they didn't get across to the raven haired. But she hoped that wasn't needed.
"How many people are in each chain? I mean... that meeting couldn't have had everyone." Ash chuckled at her words.
"Oh no. If we had the whole league there, it would've taken up the area where the citizens were at. That's why we chose people to represent some of the bigger sections. Such as Purple for the majority of the Darkseid Chain." The purple haired boy smiled sheepishly at his words. "We lost count of the actual league, but the main league isn't too big." May nodded as she paused.
"Why hide after all these years?" Ash paused.
"We didn't really hide the entire time. We only hid for the first couple of months while setting up everything in Alola."
"Wait... so you gained the entire region?" He smiled at her question.
"Not entirely. We gained support of it all, but we only took certain areas for bases. We put more of them in areas that branch off of islands."
"Do you guys have people outside the region?"
"Oh yeah." They looked at Max, who put his head down. "Between the Story Chain and the Darkseid Chain, we have a lot of people outside the region. Bonnie and Dawn are our main soloists that hang outside. Everyone else is in pairs or groups." May gulped. They really knew what they were doing when they were put down once. One question still stirred, and it was going to be her deciding factor. Her throat hurt as she spoke.
"How would you guys sort a new person, just a random person, into the group?" Ash glanced at Drew for help. Apparently that one didn't fly as well as it should. Drew repeated the question as she paused. Ash hummed at the shift in topic. If he had grown out of the old Ash who was a total moron and was denser than a rock, then he would've caught on to where she was going with the question.
"Depends on the person's strengths, weaknesses, skills, and interests. Each area of the group has something different that supplies different things. Such as Max is leader of the Story Chain but is better in helping the League Chain within the region. Bonnie is more of a solo for the Darkseid Chain but has aided us in the League Chain several times. Occasionally anyone that needs to recover for something temporarily shifts to the Darkseid Chain for recovery. There's never a solid spot for any one person. Almost everyone has changed spots at least once in their time of the league." Paul coughed.
"Unless you're Purple, then you don't have a real spot." Purple looked at the other purple haired male as the room lost it. May smiled at the change in mood. They weren't afraid to show a little bit of fun no matter who it was. Purple finally spoke.
"I do have a spot. You're just jealous that you're not good enough for it." Paul stopped as he looked at the younger boy. A smile crossed Purple's face as Paul paused.
"I... did not see that coming. Wait... are you talking about your title?" Purple smiled evilly at his words.
"Yes I am. No one can be a better idiot than the one and only Purple Midori." The room chuckled as they calmed down. May paused as her mind was set. She just needed time to sort through everything and talk to some people.
"Thank you for that. You guys are still morons." Purple opened his mouth to object when Paul stopped him. The duo purple haired males started bickering as the others cleaned up. As they went out, Ash stopped her.
"You asked that last question for a reason." She paused at his words.
"You caught on quick. Yes... I'm refinding my spot in this battle. Some found it quickly, I need time. I thank you for taking the time to talk to me about those questions." He nodded as he hummed.
"Are you ok? You're not usually this... quiet..." She grimaced as she felt Drew's eyes hit the conversation.
"It's not important right now. I'll see you later if you don't lose any brain cells." He opened his mouth to counter when she motioned to Drew to hurry up. He closed it and sighed.
"See you two later. Have a safe journey home." May paused at that. He really didn't mind that they were technically enemies. He cared more about peace than war. She nodded in response as they took off. She leaned against Drew as they hit the skies. He smiled as she fell asleep.
(Yes. Ship moments were in here. You're welcome. Someone had to.)
