18) I Find a Hidden Talent

After spending the whole day as Dora, I came back to the hospital at night. Callan and Aaron were already waiting for me, with the robot in Callan's hands.

"It's fixed?" I asked him.

"Yeah. I discovered and changed many things in it. This robot was working on the principle of moving coil galvanometer......." He seemed really proud of his work and actually knew what he did. I, on the other hand, had no idea about the science he was speaking about and as a result, zoned out on the first line itself. He kept going on and on for five whole minutes until I accidentally yawned.

"Oops!" I whispered since he saw me. "I didn't get enough sleep last night, so..." I tried to justify myself.

"You are wight. You don't sleep, Ana," Callan said with a raised eyebrow.

"Exactly. That's why I am sleepy." I told him lamely. However, when he kept looking angrily at me, I lowered my eyes in guilt.

"You didn't hear a single word. Did you?"

"Yeah, I did. You said moving coil galvanometer." I told him, excited that I remembered such a difficult word.

"That's it?" he asked.

"There was more?" I asked in confusion. This caused Callan to shake his head in disapproval. I looked at Aaron and I could bet anything that if he could speak, he would be snickering at me. I don't know what came over me but instead of having guilt for my actions, I actually got jealous of Aaron, who I knew, also didn't hear anything.

"Alright, I will tell you the important things," Callan said with a scowl. I nodded and got ready to pretend better than the last time.

"This robot can actually detect the stone. That's why it was in that village. But since we don't want it to get confused or side-tracked, we will be going to an era before the family got the stone. From there it will lead us forward."

"Okay. But I have one question." He motioned for me to continue. "If it was so easy, why couldn't you have told me this earlier?" I said rolling my eyes at him.

He muttered something along the lines of dumb people, but being pretty sure it wasn't about me, I ignored him. Reaching the place, Callan put the robot on the ground and started it. It was then that I realised that Aaron was still with us. So, I called him "Callan, won't Aaron mind if we start this robot?"

"The robot emits VLF radiations which were harming him. I changed some settings to ensure that this does not repeat. Aaron won't mind it now." I accepted whatever he said because I had no idea what a counterargument would be. For a few minutes, Callan kept on working on the robot. He seemed to be having some difficulty with it but I had no idea if I could help him in any way.

I kept looking around while waiting for him when my gaze fell on the colourful bird I have seen before. I wanted to call Callan to ask about them but he beat me to it.

"Ana, I want your stone pieces from your belt. Remove them slowly please."

I did what he asked me to, forgetting all about the birds and held my palm towards him, with the pieces on it. Callan slowly bought the robot to my hand. When it did nothing, he bought his own hand near the bot which held the stone pieces from his belt. "Fuck!" he cursed when nothing happened again.

"What is it?" I asked finally.

"I reprogramed the bot. Now it has no idea what to look for. I have done the setting, but he needs to see at least one small piece of the stone to find a similar one." he explained the crisis.

"So, these pieces aren't enough?" I asked dread lacing my voice.

"They are broken. It would have been enough if they were joined." His voice was lost but it sparked something inside me.

I looked intently at the pieces in my hand and suddenly one of them moved. I looked above in surprise to find Callan busy. He hadn't seen anything.

"Callan. Bring your bot and get it ready to activate. I think I can do something."

"What?" he asked, confusion seeping from his voice.

"Just bring it." He did what I asked him to and I placed my open palm in front of it. On his signal, I again concentrated deeply and once again some pieces moved.

"How did you that?" he asked me. However, instead of replying, I just closed my eyes and focused with everything I had on joining the pieces. I could feel them moving on my hand but I dare not open my eyes.

"Just a little more, Ana." Callan persuaded me. And suddenly, I felt a warmth spend through my palm. It was as if the usage of power was completing me. It was making me fulfilled. I wanted to use more of it, until I felt a hand on my shoulder, breaking me from my meditation.

"Anana." I heard Callan call me softly. I opened my eyes to see him standing in front of me while clutching the robot tightly in his hand. The stone pieces were still broken. The robot, howbeit, had red shining eyes now.

"Did it work?" I ask hesitantly.

"It did." he nodded. "Come on. It's charged," he said indicating towards the robot. I moved my head in a yes and he kept it on the floor. As soon as it touched the ground, it started moving. But then again, everything was moving. Or was it just me?

I placed one of my feet forward but it failed to take my balance and I fell sidewards. But before, I could touch the bottom, a strong pair of arms caught me.

"Ana." I heard Callan speak somewhere near my head.

"I am okay," I whispered.

"You are anything but okay. Whatever you did has exhausted you. Come on, try to stand up. Aaron will carry you." He helped me get hoisted around Aaron's back. As soon as I straddled it, I fell forward and laid on his back.

He started moving and I lost all sense of time. It seemed like a few minutes when my senses finally returned. I raised my body to see we were still moving. Callan was ahead of us and was leading the way. I was still feeling a little tired but could move now.

It was a few more minutes before the road started narrowing down. Callan had still not looked backwards so I assumed he must be busy concentrating on the robot. As we were walking, I felt a presence behind me, but seeing that we were in a dense forest, I didn't think it to be a good decision to stop.

Ten more minutes of walk and we finally reached a cave of some sort. I gently moved my feet into Aaron's fur to stop him to descend. The noise made Callan turn around and see me.

"That's not a good idea. You should rest," he said sternly.

"It's a cave. I am not bumping my head into walls. It's better to walk." I told him in an obvious tone. The robot's voice was diminishing, so Callan dropped the matter and started moving.

"Aaron can't enter." I yelled at Callan's back "It's too low."

Aaron also seemed to have guessed the problem for he neighed and gently pushed me forward, urging me to go ahead without him.

"He is right. We need to go without him." Callan also urged me forward.

"We can't leave him in the middle of a forest alone. There can be danger lurking around her. I already felt something..."

"Ana, I hate to break it to you but it's already three in the morning. So, instead of worrying about a really self-sufficient horse, let's go in, get those stones and get back before it's too late."

"Three?" I asked surprised "How long was I unconscious?"

"An hour and a half or something..." he answered back. "Come on now."

I nodded and gave one last glance to Aaron before I went in.
