16) Death Warrant Released
They stayed like that for some time. Finally, her mother entered. Dora started to move out of his arms to sit properly but Lawrence didn't allow her, grasping her more firmly. Dora looked at him confusingly but he just squeezed her shoulder reassuringly.
"Lord Haddington, I extremely apologize for the trouble we caused you. Since you are marrying her, we thought it is necessary for you to know all about it but we did not intend for any big problems." her mother told him softly.
"Do not worry Lady Pembridge. Dora was not and will never be a trouble for me. Though I have to express my regrets at this point. I do not actually know what the problem is. I am as clueless as Dora in this case." His words caused Dora's heart to swell in pride. They both loved each other with everything they have and soon they would turn into one. I couldn't be happier for them.
"Did Edward not fill you in?" her mother asked in confusion.
"I actually did not give him a chance." he whispered apologetically "The moment I heard Dora is unconscious I ran here, not giving him a chance to explain anything."
Dora felt really bad about this but Larry sensed it and therefore continued by looking at her "It is not your fault. I would have been sadder if I had not got to know about it." causing a smile to appear on Dora's face.
"Well then, let my husband and the rest of the children come and we will tell you both everything together. Then you can also decide on what step to take next." Confusion morphed onto both of their faces but they agreed.
Half an hour later, all of Dora's family had arrived and the couple had been informed about the problem at hand. Both of them had a different reactions to the problem, while Dora suddenly became frantic and started cursing her fate, Larry held her calmy and simply hugged her to relax her.
"My sickness is back Larry," she whispered into his chest, as tears started to form in the corner of her eyes. "This only means one thing. The marriage..."
"...still stands" Lawrence interrupted. Dora moved back to see Larry staring intently at her. 'Dora, do not cancel the wedding. I forbid it."
"But Larry, can you not see that if this wedding takes place, all I would be is a burden on you." Dora tried to explain.
"And can you not see that all I want is for you to be something to me. I want you to be my wife, my soulmate, my better half, my life. I want to live each second by your side. And if due for any reason your days are limited then I want you to spend all of them with me. Dora, do not do this to me. Please, Dora, I love you. Please do not cancel the wedding again." he almost begged her.
"Okay," Dora relented with a sigh after some time causing Larry to heave a sigh of relief as well.
"So, the wedding will take place as per the schedule, in five days?" her father asked.
"I am sorry sir, but is there any chance of preponing the wedding?" Larry asked him.
"You want to prepone it?" Nicholas asked in shock.
When Larry nodded, everyone turned to Dora. But this time she knew the answer crystal clear. She also nodded her head and her parents agreed to prepone it for two days. The wedding was now therefore just in three days.
That night Larry stayed with Dora after promising her parents about no funny business. Both of them went to the room's personal balcony and stayed there holding hands, talking. Lawrence told Dora about some of his work tales while Dora kept silent, cherishing the moment and listening to his voice.
"Today is again a full moon night." Larry suddenly pointed "Remember what happened last month."
"I told you about my disease. Remember it crystal as ever." Dora told without even missing a beat. "Do you not think that the full moon has an unhealthy obsession with us. The last time I told you the bad news and this time the sickness is back."
"I do not know about unhealthy but I believe it is romantic for sure. If it would not have been for your sickness returning, I would not be sitting with you in my arms and our wedding night would surely not be closer." he winked at her.
"You are a pervert." Dora chuckled shaking her head at him.
"Only for you," he said with a smile, causing a tinkling feeling to erupt in Dora's stomach.
As they were both enjoying their own perfect world, I was fretting. I would rather be with Callan, finding the stone than sitting among two cute lovers. Both of them got lost looking at the night sky in each other's arms and as if in a trance, my hand flew to my belt and I slowly opened it to get a glance at the small dull grey pieces of the stone.
However, a surprise was waiting for me. The stone wasn't dull as always. It was glowing. Instinctively my mind went back to the fisherman's daughter's life.
The day she got the stone as a present, she wore the bracelet and went to sit near the window, staring intently at it. The bracelet was an important family heirloom and she was too proud today to go for an early sleep. Besides today was the full moon and her mother had told her that the bracelet glows under the full moon. And today she was testing it.
I remember that the bracelet had indeed glowed around midnight just like my stone was glowing right now. I closed my belt and waited for morning to share this information with Callan. Maybe it could help us in some way.
It was after an hour that Dora finally went to sleep. Larry slept with her but got up at dawn. He tried to wake her up in time but Dora was too adamant.
"Let me sleep," she whispered in a sleepy voice, slapping his and away. He looked at her in confusion at her odd request. "Do you not want to get ready for breakfast?" he asked.
"What is the time?"
"It is six."
Dora immediately opened her eyes to look at him. "What are you doing up so early?" she asked in confusion.
"I have been up from four, was out on a run. I thought I should wake you up now." he seemed genuinely unaware of Dora's sleeping habits. I, therefore, waited for the drama to start.
Dora sat up and looked at him in his eyes. "You need to learn a few things. First, I am able to get ready in only half an hour. And therefore, I wake up only half an hour before breakfast. After our marriage, I will wake only early enough to complete my wifely duties. And second, you will not be leaving the room again without me. We will sleep and wake together in each other's arms. You can continue with your run when I will be doing household work." she completed with a fierce look in her eyes.
Lawrence, who was trying to contain his smile suddenly busted into a peal of full-fledged laughter at her expression. "You look so adorable when you are angry."
"Hey!" Dora whined which caused his laughter to increase.
"Come here," Larry called opening his arms for a hug. Dora immediately ran into them. When he started to get up, Dora tackled him into bed and laid on his chest. Finally giving in to her, he started laughing and she couldn't help but smile. They stayed like that for some time with Larry occasionally kissing on top of her head finally moving away and reaching downstairs just in time for breakfast.
After breakfast, Larry finally left and Dora started to read a book. She has to go for her dress fitting tomorrow, so she had nothing to do today. As she opened her book, I took control. However, before I could get up my gaze fell on the book that she was reading. Like every time this was also a factual book. However, this time the facts were on various types of jewels. I gently picked up the book and flipped the pages, my gaze going on one particular stone.
It was larvikite. The stone of my belt. I hurriedly read all the information the book had to offer on it. Then memorising the name, I ran out to meet Callan. I aimed for the hospital and sure enough, he was lying there as Rodin.
"Hey!" I called him and he immediately appeared.
"Took you long enough to come back," he said sitting up.
"Larry came a few minutes after you left and he went back just now," I told him regretfully.
"Larry?"
"Her fiancé," I explained. "But never mind him. I found something yesterday. Did you know that the stone in our belt actually glows under the full moon?"
"It does?" he asked in surprise.
"Yeah. I saw it yesterday and I also found out ..." I was however interrupted by light vibrations in Callan's belt.
"Looks like Aaron wants to meet us. Coming?" he asked me. I immediately nodded and Callan shared the coordinates with me. We flipped the hooks to find Aaron sitting alone in a dark alley. It was similar to the one where I was attacked.
"What is it, Aaron?" Callan asked him. Aaron neighed and started moving deeper into the alley. We followed him until he suddenly paused. Callan moved forward, bending on the spot Aaron had stopped. His face suddenly morphed into realisation as he stood up and turned towards me. Extending his hand, he showed me something in his palm. I leaned forward to see it as he spoke.
"Someone else was attacked yesterday. The stone is again broken."
"The person who attacks us, why do they throw the stone away? If the broken pieces stay in the belt at least they would be able to use some powers." he pondered loudly.
"I have a feeling that whoever is attacking us is not really trying to help us use any powers," I muttered sarcastically. Callan heard me and rolled his eyes pocketing the stone. Aaron suddenly neighed and broke into a run leaving the alley.
"Let's go," Callan called me as he too started running after him. "Aaron can't stand here; I will explain it to you later," he said at my confused expression. I submitted and ran with them.
It was only after reaching an open space that Aaron calmed down. He went to a forest and started roaming around.
"What the hell was that?" I huffed coming to a halt.
"Usually, he picks me up on his back. But I guess he didn't want to pick us both. That's why he ran." Callan told breathlessly as he sat on the ground.
"Why did he run?" I asked him.
"Sometimes when we are near the stone Aaron senses a presence. This presence is larger on some days and lesser on others. Aaron can't stand this presence. It was also present at the place where we went that day to retrieve the stone. That's why he ran."
"It wasn't there on my time?" I asked.
"No. Not at all."
I nodded in a trance but something far more dangerous was going on in my mind. Something dangerous enough that it was stupid. Something dangerous enough that it could be a plan. A plan to save us.
Things are getting serious now. Theodora's sickness has re-emerged and Anana may have unravelled some secrets. Will it help solve the mystery now or will this just bring more problems for both Callan and Anana? Raise your hand if want to read more!
