13) Such a Jerk... but he is Sweet

The party ended at dawn. Dora wanted to crash down at Nick's bed but didn't want Ginny to be suspicious. She, therefore, returned to the room and managed to get a couple of hours of sleep before Ginny arrived.

Dora had a free afternoon today, therefore I decided to make the most of it. After breakfast, I took control to go and meet Callan once again. Though I knew where he was at this hour, I decided to play ignorant. I went to meet him at our regular spot to find him already waiting.

"Hey" he greeted "You are early. I didn't expect you for another hour or two."

"What can I say?" I said shrugging and continuing with the most innocent look I could muster. "I knew you needed my help. So, I came earlier."

He just shook his head and muttered something under his breath. I grinned at him and made my way to meet Aaron.

"Alright Miss Helpful, we found something. Wanna know about it?" Callan called me.

"I am all ears."

"I would actually need eyes too. We are going back so that I can show you." I agreed.

"Okay! Meet you at the riverside." I said as I moved away from Aaron and Callan held his reigns.

"Riverside?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. I bit my tongue. Of course, he hasn't told me anything yet. I cursed my mouth. Stupid uncontrollable mouth.

"Aren't we going back to the house?" I said immediately covering up.

"We are," he said suspiciously.

"Great. Then let's go." I said quickly and set up my destination on my belt. Callan also set up his belt and together we flipped the hook. As the dizziness subsided, I saw Callan going to sit on a large rock.

"So, what did you want to show me?" I asked him sitting on the ground in front of him.

"That's secondary," he said curtly.

"Secondary? What's primary then?" I asked confused. What was more important than the stone?

"How did you know the era we have to go in? I didn't tell you and we are currently fifteen years earlier than where we were yesterday," he asked narrowing his eyes and glaring at me.

Idiot, idiot, idiot. A complete idiot. That is what I am. If only I would have gone through it patiently. Pretending guilty, I looked anywhere but him.

"Seventeen time-jumps and three whole fucking hours. That's what it took me to find out the place you already knew about." he continued in a threatening tone. But all I could do was bite my tongue to control my laughter.

"Why?" he asked the one word which I was waiting for and I did what he had done yesterday. I smirked, crossing my arms and looking directly into his eyes told him "It was fun."

Realisation dawned on him and his angry features morphed into an amazed look "You are impossible. How...How..."

"Revenge is sweet. And karma is a bitch." I said winking at him. "Now, come on quickly tell me what you discovered before the fisherman comes."

He gave me one of his signature murderous glares before we went ahead. "The girl's grand-grand-grand something father caught the stone in a fishing net. I guess we need to take a dip to find it."

"I am not swimming halfway into the river to find a piece of rock." I shrieked.

"We are borrowing that boat and going in it to the middle, then we will swim."

"Borrowing or stealing?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Borrowing without telling the owner."

"Which is stealing," I mumbled. I didn't have any problem stealing anything because I know Callan will return it. In fact, I had a problem with the second part of the plan. Who would want to go swimming in this weather? I looked around trying to find a solution to my problem.

Suddenly an idea struck me. "Wait for me," I shouted to Callan and Aaron and before they could proceed to stop me, I teleported myself to the richest fisherman's house. Becoming invisible, I went to the back garden and opened the shed to take one of the nets. Returning back with it, I saw Callan slowly dropping the boat into the water. I went and helped him.

"Where did you run off to now?" his voice was a little irritated. So, in answer, I threw the net at him. "Why jump if we can use that," I explained.

"You know how to use this?" he asked in confusion.

"Yep. I wasn't in that girl's body for no reason." He accepted my idea and together both of us went into the middle of the river. Callan rowed the boat while I threw the net. Nothing happened the first couple of times and Callan had almost lost hope with me when I caught the stone the third time.

I turned and saw him looking happily at me. "Well done." he called "Let's go back and look at the stone on the ground."

On their way back I looked deeply at the stone. The stone was perfectly round from all sides, no sharp edges could be seen. This meant that the stone wasn't broken from the river floor but rather has been flowing in the river for a long time which led to smoothening of the curves. Callan stopped the boat with a jerk, bringing me back to reality. I pocketed the stone and together we kept the boat back. Then I went back to the shed to return the net that I had borrowed without telling the owner. I had given the stone to Callan before going, therefore when I returned, I found him and the horse staring intently at it.

"So?" I called,

"It will work for one person, I guess," he said judging the size of the stone.

"But if we take it won't the events in history be altered?" I asked him "The stone is exactly the size that was in the girl's bracelet. We won't be able to break and take it, because they need the whole."

"The stone is broken from the river floor; they will manage to find another one," he told me in an unsure tone which led me to have doubts as to who was he trying to convince, him or me.

"It isn't." when he looked at me in confusion, I explained to him my theory. He kept staring at me and his expressions made it clear that he was not at all impressed by my detective skills.

"If what you say is true, and I hate to admit it but I guess it is true, then..." he was interrupted by a beeping sound from his belt.

"Fuck. I had an event. Ana, take the stone. Don't do anything stupid, I will be back in ten minutes." Saying this he pressed the stone in my hands and before I could object, he was gone. "Wow! Now what?" I asked turning towards Aaron.

Aaron neighed and pointed towards the rock on which Callan was sitting earlier. "You want me to sit and wait for him?" Aaron nodded at my question. "But we don't know when he will be back. I say we go back and he can find me later." I thought my idea was perfect since Callan knew where to find me when he gets back, but Aaron had other plans. As I started to set my belt, he suddenly rose in the air and attacked my hand causing the stone to be thrown back into the river.

"Aaron!" I shouted and without thinking, plunged into the river behind the stone. It took me a few minutes to find the stone. When I came back to the surface, Aaron was sitting under a tree enjoying himself calmly. "You are only loyal to Callan, aren't you?" I said glaring at him. "I believe if I again try to go back, you will repeat this." his silence was enough to prove that he wouldn't mind drenching me again for that stupid fool.

I went back and pocketed the stone, and decided to stand under the sun while waiting. After five minutes Callan finally decided to grace us back with his presence.

"Hey" he called cheerfully. However, as he took in the scene around him, he realised what had happened. He narrowed his eyes at me "You tried to run away with the stone."

"Run away? Watch your wordings, mister. I thought I would wait for you back at the park where we always meet. I didn't know you would come so soon." I explained myself. I was still angry at Aaron but it would always be Callan who would be receiving the chiding.

"Of course, I came so soon. It was just her mother who had come to see him."

I didn't understand so Callan explained "Rodin doesn't have a life. Seven months ago, he was caught in an accident. Since then, he is in a coma. I need to go back only when a doctor or his family comes to see him which is a total of three times on any normal day. Today it was his mother."

"If he doesn't live then why did you possess him?"

"I can do anything this way. No one needs me to be anywhere." he said with a shrug "But he would wake in four months. So, I wanted to find a stone before that. Otherwise, I would be caught in his life and trust me when I say it isn't exciting at all."

"Wait! So, you mean to say he isn't dying anytime soon?" I asked hesitantly.

"Dying?" He asked with a raised eyebrow "No. He is going to live around thirty more years. What... what gave you that idea?"

I didn't reply to him. It was not an emergency for him. He was doing it only because he was bored. He wasn't stupid enough to select a body with a wish to die early. That title was only saved for me, I guess.

"Ana..." Callan called me; concern clear in his voice "Are you...like um...going to..."

"What do we do with the stone?" I asked interrupting him. I knew what he was going to ask but I wasn't going to tell him. I didn't want him to think of me as an idiot and the best way was by avoiding the question.

He seemed to have caught my hint and dropped the topic. "We need to throw it back. If it is the only piece then the family needs to have it. We can't change the future." disappointment was clear in his voice.

I stepped forward and threw the stone as far as I could. "It's a dead end." I declared.

"Got any new ideas?" I asked no one in particular.

"Ana," Callan called me softly.

"Yeah?" I wasn't turning around to face him. The anger, anxiety and stupidity of my own actions were suddenly weighing on me and threatening to be shown in form of tears.

Callan had one idea, I had one. Both of them had failed. With Dora's engagement, lots of time would be gone on wedding shopping. Though Dora hoped for a longer and better life, I knew better. One and half months is what is left for her life to end. And if I didn't think of something by then, that is all I have got to live as well.

Squandering in self-pity, I didn't realise Callan coming toward me. Slowly he took my hand in his and made me turn towards him. "The fisherman would be coming. Let's go to the other side."

He flipped the hook in my belt and then in his. The tingling sensation started and I closed my eyes. When I opened it again, I found myself on the opposite bank of the river. Callan appeared beside me and led me to a spot under the sun. He sat on the ground and motioned me to do the same with a sad smile on his face.

"Come. Let's sit and talk while you get dried."
