⇒ CHAPTER SIXTEEN

WILMA DIDN'T KNOW how to feel, how to even think, so instead of acting reasonably, she was pacing back and forth in her room in utter panic, acting like a true mess — but granted, perhaps she did deserve to be a little bit of a mess. She did, after all, just find out that her father was in prison despite his innocence, that her mother died because of magic, that her father was from the Enchanted Forest and that she herself could actually see the future. Being friends with fairytale characters, being in love with Captain Hook, seeing magic, that, she could somehow make sense of. But being somehow special herself, being able to predict the future? Now, that was something entirely different. She had lived her whole life in blissful ignorance, but now, she was faced with the facts, and she didn't know what to make of it.

For a moment, she pondered if traveling to New York and seeing her father was the right choice — after all, she had spent years living in the belief that her father was a murderer, and that had evidently created a wedge between them, punched a hole in their relationship and cut their loving bond into merely shreds of hope and whatever remains was left of their wreck of a family. But instead, she settled for another option, and took a seat by the desk in the room before finding a piece of paper and a pen from one of the drawers, and without even thinking what she was writing, she began to conjure up a letter.

"Dad,

I am so sorry for doubting you, for blaming you, for being such an angry, difficult child. But now, my eyes have been opened, and I know about everything. I know magic is the reason mom is gone. I know that, somehow, I can see the future. Kind of struggling with the latter, to be honest. But really, I just want to apologize for turning my back on you, when I should have believed you. You told me you were innocent. I chose to run away from everything and start a new life elsewhere.

It hasn't all been bad, though. I found Neal. I'm best friends with Prince Charming — insane, right? But somehow, it's okay. It makes sense. The most confusing thing is probably the fact that Captain Hook is now a big part of my life. I love him. I've never said it to him, but I know it, I love him more than anything. That's not the confusing part, though. The confusing part is how much it feels right, how I know this is who I will find my happy ending with. So, in a way, you were wrong. I don't regret coming here. I thought I do, but I don't. I don't know what to do about my... gift. Not yet, but I'll figure it out.

Really, my only regret is that I didn't believe you. And I'm truly sorry. x

Love,
Winnie."

Blinking away salty tears, Wilma gulped and closed the letter before shoving it into an envelope, one that she was lucky enough to find from the desk's several drawers. The woman had barely had time to shove it in the pocket of her leather jacket, when she looked through the window of the room and spotted her friends in the center of the town, scattered around the street, and the sight of them instantly made her stand up. The chair made an unpleasant screech, but instead of cringing at the sound, Wilma headed straight out of the room, slamming the door behind her and rushing outside, where she was instantly noticed.

"Wilma, oh my God!", Snow's worried voice was the first one to break through, and the princess took long strides until she reached Wilma, but before the woman had time to close her into a tight squeeze, Killian rushed in and pulled Wilma into a loving embrace. Wilma could tell her absence had scared them, which somehow managed to surprise her — she had never expected to be of such importance for these people, these heroes, these legends, but maybe it was time for her to accept the fact that she was more than she ever thought she could be. She was special, too. More than an ordinary girl who loved rock music and cake.

"Bloody hell, Wilma", Killian whispered, his voice giving away just how truly terrified he had been. "Never do that again. Are you okay?", he asked, eyeing the woman with caution, before taking her hand and walking her to the others. Wilma didn't know how to answer. In some ways, she was okay, or at least she was nearly there, but she wasn't sure if she could say that after everything Pan had told her.

Well, technically, she couldn't say anything, when suddenly, none other but Peter Pan himself arrived on the scene, using his magic to freeze everyone on the spot. With eyes blown wide due to shock and fear, Wilma stared at him, given no choice but to remain like that, her fingers still intertwined with Killian's, who was looking rather upset. For several reasons, probably, but he could share none due to the immobile state everyone found themselves in.

Wilma hated it — especially when Pan neared her friends, threatening their lives and toying with the idea of killing Belle or Neal, but when Wilma tried to lunge toward him, she realized that it was, indeed, impossible. Her feet refused to obey her commands, and although her heart was still beating in her chest, air ran through her lungs and her mind was swarmed with thoughts, she couldn't speak or move, she couldn't do anything. She wasn't in control of her body, like she wasn't really there, like she was paralyzed and all she could do was watch as Pan settled for killing Neal first. It was a decision that put Wilma into a state of great panic, but luckily for them, Gold had the most brilliant timing and stopped Pan from killing anyone.

"Stay away from them", he growled as he pulled Pan away from Neal and the rest, which would've made Wilma sigh in relief, if only it had been possible. "Oh, you will", Gold continued as Pan mocked him, saying how he would love to see the man fight against him, "because I have a job to finish, and I have to do it — whatever it takes. No loopholes. And what needs to be done has a price... a price, I'm finally willing to pay."

Wilma had no idea what Gold was plotting, but it had to be something good — the man was rarely an underachiever — even if Pan seemed rather unimpressed by the threats. If anything, he seemed amused, as Gold proceeded to say his goodbyes to Baelfire and Belle, which could be taken as a bad sign, but due to being frozen by Pan's magic, stopping him was impossible, too.

Then, Gold did something Wilma, or no one else, had expected. He summoned his detached shadow, which arrived with the Dark One's Dagger in its hand, and soon enough, the blade was in Gold's possession. "You see, the only way for you to die", he grunted as he grabbed Pan, holding him captive whilst continuing, "is if we both die. And now, I'm ready", and with that — Gold shoved the dagger into Pan's back, stabbing him, and killing the both of them in the process. And all the heroes could do, was watch aside, how Rumplestiltskin sacrificed himself, and saved the day.

As Pan grunted in pain, the dagger caused black smoke to appear and catch the two of them in a whirlwind, and once the fog vanished, Pan's true nature was revealed. His youth was stripped away from him, and all that was left was a trembling, cowardly man on the verge of death, gasping and wheezing as every second caused him more aching. And yet, Wilma couldn't bring herself to feeling bad — nor understanding how Peter Pan was Rumplestiltskin's father.

"Rumple, please. You can stop this. Remove the dagger", he begged for his life, his pleading eyes carefully flickering over to Gold. "We can start over. We can have a happy ending", he laughed weakly, trying to draw out Gold's more sympathetic side, but it was far too late for that — too late to apologize and try to fix things. Luckily Gold knew better than to have false hope, and with hatred for his father shining bright in his eyes, he laughed in disagreement.

"Ah, but I'm villain. And villains... don't get happy endings", he spoke, and with that, he twisted the dagger in his father's back, prompting bright light to emerge and swallow the both of them whole. It was obvious that this was the end for them — they were staring at death, but instead of being dark and terrifying, it seemed peaceful, noble, safe. The golden light disappeared eventually, and so did Rumple and his father, which caused the immobility spell to wear off and free the heroes, who were finally granted the possibility to react. Obviously everyone was shocked, but most of all, Belle's heart had been stomped on and the woman crumbled onto the ground, collapsing onto her knees and breaking into heartbroken sobs at the realization that her love was gone. Gold had sacrificed himself, and whilst it was quite heroic, it didn't make it any easier for them to grasp the fact that he was now dead.

Letting go of Killian, Wilma joined Belle on the ground, and as a gesture of comfort, she pulled Belle into her arms and let the woman sob as she held her tightly. She knew what it felt like — to lose loved ones, but she had never before lost true love, and therefore, she couldn't even imagine what Belle was feeling like. Truthfully, Wilma didn't know if she could ever move on if Killian were to die, and that was why she didn't try to calm Belle down or promise that it was going to be okay. All she could do, was hold the crying woman and be there for her.

"What the bloody hell is going on?", Wilma then questioned, looking over to her friends, before letting her gaze wander and see the green smoke closing in on the town, swallowing the buildings and drowning the surroundings with the thick fog. Weight dropped onto her heart, and fear found its way within Wilma where it spread out like a wildfire, uncontrollable and victorious, causing her eyes to widen and her body to tremble. Whilst the smoke was beautiful, in a way, it was also wonderfully terrifying and presumably, nothing good. Therefore, Wilma looked up at her friends again whilst holding onto Belle, in a desperate need of an explanation to shed some light on the seemingly bad situation.

"Pan has activated a curse. My curse. The one that brought everyone here, that created Storybrooke. And the only way for me to break it is if I say goodbye to the thing I love most", Regina mumbled, staring at the scroll in her hands, and it was easy for everyone to realize that she was talking about Henry. She needed to say goodbye to Henry. "Breaking the curse will destroy Storybrooke. And everyone would go back to where they're from, prevented from ever returning", she continued, and with that, Wilma stood up and grabbed Killian's hand. Well, that definitely sounded bad. In fact, it sounded a lot like goodbyes, like Wilma could never again see her friends, her family... or Killian.

"You'll go back to the Enchanted Forest?", she whispered, scared to even find out the answer, but Regina offered one nonetheless.

"All of us. Except Henry, and you. You will stay here because you were born here", Regina explained, and in an instant, Wilma's heart sank — for several reasons, really. Was this really the last time she was going to see all these people? And obviously, she couldn't help but think about what Pan had told her earlier, that her father was from the Enchanted Forest, that she too had a little magic in her veins. But it was true, she was born in this world, and therefore, that allowed her to stay, but made it impossible for her to go. "Emma, you'll take him, because you are the Savior. You were created to break the curse. And once again... you can escape it", Regina added, smiling at Emma.

Gulping, Wilma turned to Killian, who met her longing gaze and showed similar signs of misery and heartbreak. She didn't want to say goodbye to him, she couldn't. How could she live without him, knowing he was out there but beyond her reach? He wasn't the only one, either, what about Neal, or David, Snow, Regina, all of them? All the people she cared about, they were going to leave, and once again, Wilma would have to be alone. Where would she go? What would she do? How could she ever live a life knowing that she was forced to walk away from the right path, turn her back on her happy ending? How would it ever be worth living?

"You need to leave", Regina spoke once more, "there is no other choice."
