Chapter 7
Isabella lead Salvador and Eleanor up another set of wooden stairs, which much to Salvador's distaste meant they were going even more higher up, than they already were.
''How much further?'' Salvador asked, as he tried desperately not to look down, because if he did, he'd see the forest floor extremely far away from where he was standing.
''We are nearly there, don't worry,'' Sure enough Isabella was right, for a couple minutes later all three of them were yet again stepping onto a wooden walkway. Unlike all the other levels, the trio had been on; this level seemed to not have many people wandering about.
''How come it's so quiet up here?'' Salvador asked, as he paused to catch his breath. Army training hadn't prepared him for climbing around three flights of spiralling staircases.
''It's because only two people live up here and the lower levels are mostly markets,'' Eleanor explained.
''Ok, who lives up here then?'' Salvador asked wanting to know what was so important about the two people who lived so high up; on their own.
''That would be me,'' The voice startled all three of them. Eleanor was the first to whip round to see a woman, a Drei Occhi woman. It was upon seeing her that Eleanor realised how few Drei Occhi she had seen on the lower levels.
When both Isabella and Eleanor realised who the woman was, they bowed. Whereas Salvador just stood; he had never seen anyone like the woman in his life.
''Who, who are you?'' Salvador stuttered out, for some unknown reason he was nervous.
''My name is, Iris Delgado, the chief of the forest of Ibarra. However seeing as you are a Batalanto, it is unlikely that you would know that,'' Iris replied, her words holding a distinct air of authority.
''Sorry,'' Salvador muttered in apology, not looking the women in the eye; she was a Drei Occhi so he was trying not to look at any one of the three she had. He did notice though, two of her eyes were almost silver in colour, and her third, which was located in the middle of her forehead was light purple.
Salvador intrigued looked over at Eleanor, looking into each of her eyes. He had thought they were all the same shade of blue, but now he saw the middle eye was a lot lighter than the rest. It caused him to furrow his brow in confusion, how hadn't he noticed that before. There had to be a reason behind it, so he kept the question in his head knowing that it was the wrong time to say it now.
''Eleanor Navarro, I had hoped that Nox would be wrong, like she normally is, but I fear that is not the case,'' Iris spoke addressing Eleanor; completely ignoring and waving off Salvador's apology.
''I am afraid not,'' Eleanor replied, she didn't want to be the one to bring bad news, but she knew she couldn't go back now.
''Then we have much to discuss,'' Iris said wanting Eleanor to follow her, ''Oh and the Batalanto can stay outside,'' She added, before turning around and leading the way to her hut.
Like many of the houses Salvador had seen on his Journey, up three storeys, Iris's was made out of wood. The wood however, wasn't plain, it had like Salvador had seen before, multiple symbols carved into it. Its roof was also wooden and had the same vine decoration as Eleanor's key and the handles he had seen on the gate. The symbols and vines meant something, but Salvador didn't know what.
Beads hung down from the ceiling outlining a door. The beads clinked together as Salvador watched Eleanor and Iris entire the hut, house or whatever it was called, Salvador didn't really care.
Once they had gone inside, Salvador noticed he was all on his own because Isabella had left as soon as Iris had appeared.
''Salvador,'' The word seemed as it was just floating on the breeze, spoken by a voice that was husky and old. At first he'd thought it was him imagination, but then he heard it again, this time louder.
''Salvador Cymont.''
''Whose there, who are you?'' Salvador felt as if he was talking to thin air, as he neither saw nor heard any sign of a person moving close to him.
''The question you should be asking me is not who I am, but what I am,'' The voice was definitely louder the before however, Vador still had no idea where it was coming from.
''Fine what are you?'' Salvador asked huffing because he felt it was Isabella playing some trick on him.
''I am a seer of the future. Now ask me my name,'' The voice replied.
''I already did, but what is your name?'' Vador asked sarcasm riddled in his voice.
''My name is Nox and you Salvador Cymont are part of a prophecy that I have foreseen for many, many years,'' Upon hearing the name Salvador stood up straighter, as goose bumps crept up his back as well.
''Can, can I see you?'' Vador wanted to see the infamous Nox that everyone had been talking about since he had arrived.
---------------------------------------------------
''Are you sure Salvador will be alright outside, I mean Nox is out there,'' Eleanor was concerned about leaving Vador outside with Nox because she felt he's do something stupid like talk to her or worse, look at her.
''I think there is more important things a stake, than worrying about you friend and Nox,'' Iris replied pointing to a stool, wanting Eleanor to sit down.
''Yes I know but what about the rhyme?'' Eleanor asked.
''Nothing but what it is, a nursery rhyme, is what I call it. Now down to businesses according to Nox you have bad news for me,'' Iris wasn't wrong, but Eleanor thought it would be worse for her parents to hear, rather than Iris.
''My sister has escaped as well as many other criminals from the prison,'' The prison didn't need a name because it was the only one on the planet.
''What proof do you have of this?'' Iris asked not convinced.
Eleanor sighed, shrugging her bag off her back, before then taking out a newspaper.
''I know newspapers are not used here, but if you want proof, you'll have to read it,'' Eleanor explained handing the newspaper over to the Drei Occhi woman in front of her. She took it and scanned the front; she was shocked to say the least.
''How could this have happened, it's impossible,'' Iris spoke looking between the newspaper and Eleanor.
''Yet it has happened,'' Eleanor simply said, taking the newspaper out of Iris's now shaking hands.
''I will schedule a meeting for later today, for now you are free to visit your parents, for I presume that would have been part of your visit,'' Eleanor just nodded in response.
---------------------------------------------------
While Eleanor and Iris where in conversation, Salvador was still talking to Nox.
''Can I see you?'' Salvador repeated after his fist question was met with silence.
''To be able to see me, you must first find me,'' Nox finally replied.
Salvador huffed, knowing he'd have to move from his position in order to find Nox. As he walked around the side of the hut he could hear the faint voices of Iris and Eleanor speaking inside. He did stop to listen, but no matter how hard he strained his ears, he could not work out what they were saying. So he continued in his search for Nox. It didn't take him long to reach the back of the hut, where her stopped upon seeing what looked like a cage, with a black cloth draped over it, hiding whatever was inside.
''Are you under the cloth?'' Vador asked slowly approaching the cage.
''Why don't you take it off and find out,'' Nox's voice was cleared than ever and Salvador concluded she was probably under the cloth; in the cage.
He gripped the fabric in one of his hands and slowly begun to lift it up off of the square cage. Once it was off, he was stunned; he had never seen anything that resembled what was sat in front of him. Nox had the face of an old woman, with short whips' of grey hair coming from her head. She sat hunched over in a black woollen coat that had a hood, which was covering half of her head. Long sharp nails curled over at the ends, were attached to two hands that wrapped around the bars of the cage.
She looked up a Salvador; her hollow eyes bore into his own, before she then tilted her head back and laughed. Her lips parted and Vador was able to see the five, yes five, yellow almost black teeth that were set at crocked angles in her mouth.
''Ijoba or Drei Occhi if not thee. Look upon the face of Nox, she will be set free,'' Nox shouted the words throwing her head back, as the lid of the cage blew off.
When Salvador had arrived, it had been silent, with not a breath of wind. However, that had all changed as a strong breeze seemed to almost lift Nox out of the cage.
Hurried footsteps were heard behind Vador, when he looked around he came face to face with Eleanor and Iris. He swore he saw the colour utterly drain from both their faces as they watched with him.
''I'm so sorry, I didn't know,'' He had to shout to be heard, not just over the wind, but the laughter of Nox.
''It's not your fault, don't worry,'' To Salvador's surprise it was Iris who had spoken and not Eleanor. ''Nox you have nowhere to go, come back,'' Iris demanded pointing at the cage, as Nox flew higher and higher into the air.
''The darkness is coming and the stars are dying, like an illness, stretching across galaxies. They will come back only to die again. To save everything,'' As Nox spoke, she had her eyes fixed on both Eleanor and Vador. She completely ignored Iris and her order.
''What are you talking about?'' Eleanor shouted this time, craning her neck up as Nox floated higher still.
''The prophecy speaks of the soldiers' from so far away, must learn to fit in for they will no longer be soldiers. They travel in time to unknown places. To save everything,'' As Nox finished a blinding white light enveloped her.
The three watching had to cover their eyes and by the time they had recovered, Nox had disappeared.
