A Jacoban's comet

- Mom, please tell me a story.

- It's late, darling, sleep.

- But I'm not tired at all! Please?

-  All right, I think we have time for a short one. Hm. Do you want to hear the Comet's Tale?

- Oh Yes!

- A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

- Mom, it's not Star Wars, come on! I am a big kid now!

- All right, let's start again. What do you know about comets?

-  Mom, YOU are supposed to tell a story! Comets, they are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock and dust falling from the sky!

-  Well, they are not all falling onto our heads but yes, this is correct until we discovered a very, very special comet, the year you were born.

-  Tell me, mom, tell me!

-  Outside our solar system, there is a planet called Jacoba 59. This is a big and bright blueish planet, very rocky, with lots of volcanoes. Its temperature at the surface is about minus 110 degrees Celsius.

- Wow, that is cold!!!

- You're right, it is cold compared to the temperature here on Coruscant. So there is that big cold Jacoba 59 planet. And it was at the time when, here, on Coruscant, humans had built the SpaceX Horizon spacecraft Serie I, the first ever ship able to fly at light speed. She was an amazing plutonium powered ship protected from asteroids by electromagnetic shields. A heavy-metal double-pocket hatch shield covered its bridge. She had a huge control room, a giant machine room, a swimming pool, a garden, plenty of greenhouses, lots of exercise rooms and beautiful apartments built-in inside, and every material to build a city on the new planet.

-  And she had an amazing flying sound and beautiful flames when she got into light speed!!!

- No, darling, there is no sound in space nor flames! Horizon I crew's mission was to settle on the planet, explore Jacoba, collect signs of ancient life, send samples to Coruscant and come back, for those ready to take another 20 years of their life travelling.

-  20 years to reach the planet?

- Yes, 20 years on the way in and 20 years on the way out!

- Wow!

- So they selected the most brilliant young crew they could to ensure the success of the mission. There were 50 of them, all between the ages of 25 and 30, men and women, couples that could have children during the journey. They were astronauts and each of them knew at least 3 jobs: astronaut, doctor, biologist, for example. They had prepared for 5 years before the big departure.

- But where is the comet? There is no comet in your story!!

- Hold on...

- So they left and flew at light speed for 20 years. When they finally reached Jacoba, they were between 45 and 50 years old. Most of them had had children during the journey and when they arrived, there were 128 of them, mostly adults and teenagers. Jacoba had volcanoes everywhere, and the ship was very difficult to land. Unfortunately, they damaged the vessel while landing and the light-speed generator was destroyed. But they were so happy to land safely on a ground and freely breathe some air, that they did not really care. Even the freezing weather would not scare them at first. They had time to plan for everything. They had winter-space clothes to resist, and the ship was heating correctly at least at the beginning. Because of the extreme cold weather, they had to dig into the ground to find some warmth.

One day, while they were digging, the most amazing thing happened. They encountered a new humanoid species: the blue Jacoban people. There were hundreds of them: small human-like people, with blue skin and no hair, very gentle and peaceful. They had settled in an underground city called WinterGate. The city was located at the warmest point they had found: minus 9 degrees Celsius. Jacobans did not speak the same language, so it took them again several years to understand each other correctly. So together, humans and Jacoban people slowly started helping each other in Jacoba underground. Every night, Jacobans and Coruscant citizens would spend their time observing the sky from a kind of periscope, dug far away in the ground to observe comets crossing the black sky, in the warmth of their minus 9 degrees. In the meantime, more and more of our people were becoming melancholic...

- What does it mean, Mom, melancholic?

- Sad, darling, they missed their families. Without light speed, they had no hope to see their family again nor to return to their home planet. In addition, they were living in the dark all year long, in the WinterGate underground, and they were getting depressed. They wanted to live in daylight again, run in forests, swim in lakes. They could not do that on Jacoba.

-  Oh!!! I see..

- ...Until our people told Jacobans that we had built a gravity aggregator on our own planet, on Coruscant.

-  What does the gravity aggregator do, Mommy?

-  It allows to attract, deviate, slow down and cool down a comet and then make it land on a specific huge comet-landing area that we have designed for that purpose, to avoid a destructive crash on our soil.

- Oh, we are very smart!!

- Yes, darling, we are. So, eventually Jacobans told them that once every hundred years, there were on Jacoba 59, specific solar winds and dust tempests that naturally created comets. The next solar windstorm was due to happen in the next seven years. So they had that most amazing idea.

- What? What?

- They engineered a plan that once every hundred years would create an opportunity to travel from Jacoba through our solar system and would allow our people to return to Coruscant. But this would be a very dangerous journey. So year after year, they started building a huge new spacecraft with the material found on Jacoba and the recycled pieces from the first ship. They planned a new expedition. And the most curious thing is that almost all the WinterGate city boarded on that huge new ship. The vessel was magnificent and had hundreds of individual pods for the families. But she did not have any windows because we thought people would become blind on Coruscant, because of the powerful sunlight they had never seen or had forgotten. Once the solar tempest approached, they lifted the ship up to the cold surface of the planet and they welcomed on board people who wanted to leave Jacoba. And this is how, someday, a very special comet took off from Jacoba and flew through our solar system. It had a huge tail with blueish reflects. And it was not a comet like the others.

- It was a spaceship with our people!!!

- Yes, it was in fact the Jacoban cryonics spacecraft covered with ice, gases, and asteroid dust with a superb white-blue trail of star dust.. ,

- cryo—what?

- Well, let's say the ship was like a huge freezer that kept people frozen.

- But weren't they dead then?

-  No, their body temperature had decreased tremendously and their heart rate was very low but they were still alive and most of all, their cells did not age, so they remained young despite the journey lasted 20 years or a little less at the comet's speed.

- And then?

- Then, when the Jacoban comet reached Jupiter and later approached the sun, ice turned into steam, bodies gently warmed up and they woke up.

- But did the sun not burn them?

- No, their ship was covered with a layer that protected the inside. Then our gravity aggregator attracted and deviated the Jacoban comet and forced it into our earth landing zone.

- And the people were alive?

- Yes, all of them but they were all blind, as we unfortunately expected.

-  But Mom, what was the point then of coming back if they could not see the sun and the beauty of Coruscant?

- Well, they see it with their heart, darling, and with the warmth of the family they've found back home. And don't forget, they can equip the Coruscant adults with a visual sensor so they can see again.

- But how do you know all of this?

- Because I was there, darling. I'm back from Jacoba. I was part of the 2nd generation. I was part of the crew with your dad. I got pregnant on the way back but with, cryonics, we could conserve my pregnancy until I land on Coruscant. Even if it lasted several years.

- But then.. Does it mean that...

- Yes, dear, without my visual sensor, I am blind.
