Jumper - 1997
Artist: Third Eye Blind
Album: Third Eye Blind (self titled)
I wish you would step back
From that ledge my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand
I would understand
The angry boy a bit too insane
Icing over a secret pain
You know you don't belong
You're the first to fight
You're way too loud
You're the flash of light on a burial shroud
I know something's wrong
Well everyone I know has got a reason
To say, "put the past away"
Wish you would step back
From that ledge my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand
I would understand
Well he's on the table and he's gone to code
And I do not think anyone knows
What they're doing here
And your friends have left you
You've been dismissed
I never thought it would come to this
And I, I want you to know
Everyone's got to face down the demons
Maybe today
You could put the past away
I wish you would step back from
That ledge my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand, I would understand
I would understand
I would understand
I would understand
Understand
Can you put the past away
I wish you would step back
From that ledge my friend
(I would understand)
I wish you would step back
From that ledge my friend
(I would understand)
I wish you would step back
From that ledge my friend
And I would understand
(I wish you would step back
From that ledge my friend)
I would understand
(I wish you would step back
From that ledge my friend)
And I would understand
Bit of an essay:
Kinda found this at a bad and alone time. The emotion in "I would understand" seems so genuine and sincere, as if the singer really does want things to get easier. The repetition of that phrase shows to me how stubborn mental illness is, and how persistent you need to be in fighting that battle for yourself. "I wish that you'd step back from that ledge my friend" further explores the idea that when things are difficult, we have a choice. Either do something destructive (stepping towards the ledge) or doing something constructive (stepping away). A lot of people particularly with depression are likely to turn to self destructive behaviours which can lead them further towards the ledge despite helping in the short term.
Also, the title. A safe jumper or blanket, a warm embrace, a smile. They can all make the difference in your day and maybe even determine whether you turn to that ledge again.
Artist's words:
Lead singer Stephan Jenkins has said that the song is "about a friend who's gay, jumping off a bridge and killing themselves." Also it's about his own struggles growing up - "My parents divorced, and that hurt me. We were poor and I went to a rich high school. I was dyslexic and had attention deficit disorder, which I still have. So I carried all these things with me. One afternoon, I had this epiphany. I said 'You know what? I don't have it all together. I come from stuff that was really difficult, and that's me. That's who I am.' I embraced that. There's a line in the song that says, 'Everyone's got to face down the demons/Maybe today we can put the past away.' It's very much a song about putting the past away."
"It's not just a song about some guy offing himself. Jumper's really about understanding. Everyone carries demons around, they carry some sort of scar around. The message of Jumper is that there comes a time when you have to put the past away." -Lead singer Stephan Jenkins
In short, I can see myself coming back to this song a lot more in the future.
If anyone even reads this, what do you think?
