Chapter Thirty-Three - End of the Line
Karli wasted no time at all, spinning on the spot to run in the opposite direction to Clara. Clara let her, giving the woman the illusion of ever having a chance.
Clara ran behind her, following Karli as she raced around corners, trying to shake her loose. Clara wasn't going to let that happen though, and she blocked off the path just beyond Karli. She skidded to a stop, looking up at the purple before backing up a few paces, glancing over her shoulder.
'I can't let you leave here,' Clara said, raising her hands.
'You're with Sam, right?' Karli asked, also raising her hands, but hers in a defensive manner. She slid off her mask as she did. The fear of the unknown worked to make Karli doubt her abilities to defeat the younger girl. Sure, she had the Super Soldier serum on her side, but who knows how strong the other's powers were. 'He wanted to speak with me, yeah? Then take me to him.'
Clara cocked her head to the side, wondering why Karli was speaking as though Clara had any other plans of than that. Granted, she did, but Clara hadn't outright said so.
The truth was, and the reason Karli had come to that conclusion, was that she could see it in Clara's eyes. She could see the twisted cold in the unrelenting glare. She only stood her ground for a moment longer, eyes darting to and from Clara as she searched for an escape. Once she saw the door to the closest apartment was slightly ajar, she pounced towards it.
Again, Clara let her go, following behind her.
As Karli rushed into the room, she ran to a window, not bothering to heave it open and opting to smash it with a clenched fist instead. A moment later, and there was a violet sheen covering that exit, too. 'Come on!' She yelled, slamming a fist into it, too, her fear turning to frustration only for a second.
It returned when she heard a click of a lock behind her.
'Sorry,' Clara told her, turning from the door, her hand moving from the metal handle. 'I can keep people out, but using a door is a hell of a lot easier.'
Karli swallowed nervously as Clara faced her, a small smile twitching at the girl's lips. 'Don't do this-' She was interrupted as her body was flung against a wall, arms splayed either side of her with a wall of purple pressing into her, knocking the air from her lungs.
Clara had a hand raised now, directing the force of the energy towards Karli, the coloured glow stemming from her palm. Unrelenting, unforgiving, because Karli deserved every ounce of pain Clara could deliver.
'Clara?' She heard a voice call for her, far away, but somewhere within the building. So, maybe Sam and Bucky had noticed her absence sooner than expected. Whichever one was calling for her didn't sound particularly happy, either.
She ignored it, pulling back on the energy only enough to allow Karli a breath of air. 'Why?' Karli asked, earning a laugh from Clara.
'Why?' She repeated. 'Because the simple fact of having killed people, having destroyed lives, isn't enough? You really do think that what you're doing is right, don't you?'
'That's what this is about?' She pressed back against the purple, trying to free herself of the restraint. Clara hardly felt the struggle against it, and she could see Karli had little to no movement, so she couldn't see any reason to add any more force. 'It's the only language those people understand. They don't care about lives until it's there own that's threatened!'
Karli screamed as the pressure against her grew. Clara reminded of a reason to add more force. 'Laura Wilson,' Clara told her.
'That supposed to mean something to me?' She cried out again, and this time Clara heard a crunching sound - a bone breaking under the pressure she was imposing.
'Clara?' She heard again, this time closer, and the door behind her slammed open, a metal arm overpowering the old lock holding it in place. 'What the hell are you doing? What happened to the plan?'
Clara cast a shield between herself and Bucky as she glimpsed towards him. Her free hand lifted towards him, warning him not to think about intervening. Bucky took a step back as he saw the fire in her eyes, his legs tensing as if preparing for an attack. A controlled anger - all the more terrifying for being just that. It was almost as if something had taken control of her actions entirely.
Something had.
It was grief that had taken hold.
'That was her name. The name of the woman you killed in Austria. The GRC supply depot in Graz,' Clara growled the words, repeating the name again as her heart ached. 'Laura Wilson.'
'No - there wasn't anyone there. We waited for them to clear out,' Karli winced, now struggling for breath once again.
'Don't fucking lie to me!' Clara screamed at her, the intensity of the violet flaring and another crack sounding as one of Karli's ribs snapped under the pressure. 'I am sick of the fucking lies!'
'Clara!' Bucky shouted, trying to get her attention. 'Whatever you think she deserves, you're right. She deserves to get punishment for what she's done, just not from you.'
He was wrong. Both he and Sam were wrong. Karli deserved this - and she especially deserved this from Clara.
'She was sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. to investigate your claims against the GRC!' She continued, ignoring Bucky's attempt to get through to her. 'She was trying to help you - she was going to help you, and you killed her. You killed my mother!'
