Chapter Thirty-Nine - Next Steps

'How'd it go? Did you win?' Peter began the interrogation, jumping down from the roof as she appeared at the entrance. When he saw the strange expression she was holding; a mix between bewilderment and amazement, it was hard to read. 'What's with the face? You didn't lose, did you?'

'I think...' She started, frowning as she did. 'I think I'm telekinetic?'

The eyes in Peter's mask blinked, the hero's expression hidden from her, and she wasn't entire sure of his reaction until she heard a long gasp. 'You're not magic... You're a Jedi.'

A smile broke across Clara's lips. 'I don't know how it hasn't happened before, I was just looking at the shield, and then it was in my hands,' she told him as she walked past, heading down the road while they waited for Sam and Bucky to reconvene.

'Maybe it's like a thing where once you find out how you have your power, you start knowing how to do more things!' Peter suggested excitedly, jogging forward a few steps to walk backwards, facing her as he too headed down the road.

Clara raised an eyebrow, glancing at him out the corner of her eyes. 'I don't think that's a thing.'

'It could be,' he said. 'You didn't think you didn't think you could stop the purple until you found out what was causing it.'

'That's different, I had to actually focus on that,' Clara laughed lightly, thinking Peter's suggestion was absurd, and she couldn't figure out how it would be possible for what he had said to be the case.

'So... I'm guessing you won?' Peter probed, realising she had never actually told him.

'Yes!' She grinned. 'Sam has the shield, Walker's going to lose his title, and Bucky is... well, he's Bucky.' She frowned. 'Where is Bucky?'

'He started walking back that way.' Peter pointed over her shoulder. 'He didn't seem happy.'

'He never is,' Clara shrugged, turning from the direction Peter was pointing, and back to him. 'Do you think I could lift a person? Like, with the force?'

'I...' Peter narrowed his eyes, taking a cautious step away from her. 'I don't know.'

'Oh, relax,' Clara tutted, taking Peter's hand, feeling the texture of his suit under hers. 'I promise not to test it on you.'

'Thank God,' he sighed.

'Today,' she added. 'I won't test it on you today.'

'Clara?' Sam called out, both teenagers spinning to face him as he did. He frowned when he saw Peter. 'What's he-? Never mind. John's out of it, the police will be here soon to pick him up. Hopefully he doesn't start another fight. Where's Bucky?'

She nodded down the road. 'That way. You want us to find him?'

'Nah, he just needs time to cool off,' Sam sighed. He looked between Clara and Spider-Man, seeing their hands interlaced. Noticing Sam's glance, they both took a step apart, dropping each other's hands. 'You coming back with us? Or going home?'

'Have we found Karli?' Clara questioned, but she didn't wait for an answer before she spoke again. 'Then I'm going back with you.'

Sam nodded. 'He can't stay though. I'm not babysitting you and your boyfriend.'

'Sure, let's act like I didn't just save you back there,' Clara called over to him, folding her arms. Then, speaking quietly so only Peter could hear, she continued. 'And we should probably talk about what we are exactly at some point.'

'Yeah, probably,' Peter grimaced.

'We're heading back to the displacement camp where they held the memorial. The GRC are gonna raid all the camps we know Karli's been at,' Sam told them. 'We'll move out as soon as Bucky's back.'

'Yes, sir!' Clara gave a mock salute. 'Are you going to be alright getting home?'

'Yeah, I took a page from your book to get here,' Peter said, hearing sirens in the distance approaching the scene. 'I'll just do the same going back.'

'A page from my...?' Clara raised an eyebrow, trying to figure out what he meant by that. 'You snuck onto a plane. How?'

'I may or may not have just used Iron Spider to hang onto the side.'

'That sounds safe,' Clara gave him a look.

Peter looked down the road, seeing Bucky walking back towards the entrance. 'You have any idea when you're gonna get back?' He asked, rocking on his heels, as if to make it seem he didn't really mind too much what the answer might be.

Clara reached out, placing her hands on his shoulders to hold him still. 'Soon,' she said.

'How soon is "soon"?'

'Look, if this isn't over by the end of the week, I'll come home to see you - just to visit! Then, I'll come back,' she promised as the sound of sirens reached her, and not long after half a dozen police cars pulled up to the building. 'On one condition.'

'What?' He questioned, speaking quickly before clearing his throat and repeating the question much more calmly, looking off to the side.

Clara shook her head gently, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. 'Can I stay with you and Aunt May?' She asked, pushing her bottom lip out and batting her eye lashes.

'Of course you can, Clara. Aunt May loves you,' he assured her. 'Is it... Is it because of what happened with your dad?'

Clara smiled tightly. 'I don't think I can go home yet.'

'Okay.' Peter pulled her close. 'They're waiting for you.'

'They can wait a bit longer,' Clara told him, feeling his chest rise and fall steadily.

'Clara!' Bucky yelled, Sam looking somewhat embarrassed by the other man's impatience as Clara glared towards Bucky.

'Give her a minute, Bucky,' he said out of earshot of Clara, batting him on the arm. 'She switched your arm back on, don't tempt her into doing the opposite.'

Bucky frowned, having no clue what he was talking about.

'Why does his face look like that?' Clara asked on approach, seeing the strange muddle of an expression Bucky was wearing; some kind of angry scowl mixed with a confused frown contorted his brow, while his lips formed an almost disgusted sneer, while a smile struggled to the surface.

He averted his gaze, turning his face away and starting off with powerful strides towards the city. 'Let's go.'

Clara looked to Sam for an explanation, but he just shook his head and waved her off. 'Okay, then,' she huffed, glancing back to where Peter had been only to find a street filled with police cars, no sight of the red and black suit. 'Are you sure they can handle Walker?'

'Yeah, he's not fighting anymore.'

'Right,' Clara pursed her lips, looking down at the shield held in Sam's hand. 'So, who's taking up the shield next?'

Sam lifted it, the smear of red still clear against the metal. It glinted in the sun, the curvature of the surface reflecting the light. Clara squinted at it, thinking she saw a subtle trace of a lilac glimmer. It vanished in the same instant she thought she had seen it, and brushed it off to being a trick of the light.

'I'm not too sure on that yet,' Sam told her after a long stretch of walking in silence. She had almost forgotten she had asked the question when he finally answered, and she offered a gentle smile in response.

'Well, I know who Bucky thinks it should be,' Clara commented. 'And, in my opinion - not that you need to listen to it - I don't think that person would be an entirely terrible fit for the job.'
