Chapter Ten - Baltimore Police Station

A while after Bucky was arrested, Sam and Clara arrived at the station. Not long a walk from where they had been, soon enough they were sitting in the reception area. Clara kept eyeing the vending machines by the entrance, her stomach grumbling at the thought of food.

'Here.' Clara turned to Sam, seeing a couple of dollar notes held out for her to take. 'Get something for me and Bucky too.'

'Oh,' Clara muttered, taking the notes from the man. 'Thank you.' She grinned and rose from the uncomfortable chair she sat in. 'You want anything in particular?'

Sam shrugged, peering over to the machines. 'Grab me a Clif bar. Bucky'll probably want trail mix or something.'

'Got it,' she nodded, not hearing the jovial tone to his words. She weaved through chairs until she reached the machines. Taking a long hard look at the options, Clara eventually decided to get a peanut butter Clif bar for Sam, before grabbing the Planters trail mix for Bucky. Thinking about what might keep her fuller for longer, Clara followed Sam's lead and chose a Clif bar for herself, too, picking the blueberry flavour.

'Sam. I've heard a lot about you,' Clara looked over her shoulder as a woman shook hands with Sam. 'I'm Dr Raynor, James' therapist.'

'So nice to meet you,' Sam greeted her. 'Thanks for getting him out.'

Dr Raynor shook her head. 'That wasn't me.'

'Christina!' Clara jumped as John Walker entered the room, almost dropping the snacks as he called out to the therapist. He was immediately hounded by civilians as he walked in, some wanting pictures taken with him, other wanting signatures. 'It's great to see you again.'

'You gotta be kidding me. You know him?' Sam asked her.

'Yeah, we did some field ops back in the day.'

'I heard you were working with Bucky, so I thought I'd step in,' Walker explained as he approached them. 'Bucky's not gonna be following a strict schedule any longer.'

'We haven't finished our work. Who authorised this?'

Walker gestured to himself in what would have been a sheepish manner if it weren't for the smug look he always carried. 'He's too valuable of an asset to have tied up. Just do whatever you got to do with him, then send him off to me.'

A buzz sounded, and Bucky was led from a back hall into the reception area by two officers. He threw a questioning look towards his therapist speaking to Sam and Walker, and raised an eyebrow at Clara. Clara simply shrugged as she worked on unwrapping her energy bar.

'Got some unfinished business, him and I,' Walker continued. 'You too, Wilson. I'll be outside.'

Dr Raynor next turned to Bucky, who was leaning against the front desk. 'Bucky, condition of your release session, now. You too, Sam.'

'Oh, that's okay,' Sam waved her off. 'I'll be out here with-'

'That wasn't a request,' she interrupted, heading towards the hallway Bucky had left through.

Clara watched as they all left through the doorway, slowly chewing on the fruity oat bar, thinking about just how awkward they were going to make it in there. With any luck, that therapist would help air whatever dirty laundry was making them bicker so much. The only downside to that, was that their arguments were the only things distracting them from finding out more about Clara.

She sat back down onto the cheap plastic chairs that her bag sat under, wondering how long they would take, and whether or not she'd have time for a quick nap. After walking around invisible all day, and having slept very little the night before, and the fight with the Flag Smashers, Clara could feel sleep begin to pull at her.

Although she wanted to decide against sleeping, with nothing to do and the constant dull chatter happening around her, she could feel her eyes becoming heavy even whilst she ate the energy bar. Finishing the last bite, she rose to drop the empty wrapper in the nearby bin, moving back to the seat to place Sam and Bucky's snacks in her bag.

She stared at the door they had left through, resting her chin on a fist as she lent on her chair. Clara couldn't imagine they'd be much longer, not with Bucky in there with his snide comments. She was right of course, but that didn't stop her beginning to doze off, her head dropping now and then as time passed.

A loud buzz was the only warning she got that they had returned, Sam walking past, shaking his head in dismay, Bucky following behind him. Clara jumped to her feet, thinking that if Sam wasn't going to wait for her then Bucky definitely wouldn't, and she rushed to pull her backpack on her shoulders.

To her surprise, Bucky did stop just before the archway leading into a hallway, looking back at her as she caught up. 'What happened in there?' She asked, walking round the corner with Bucky and seeing Sam standing next to building's exit, watching them approach.

Once again, Bucky didn't answer - something Clara was quickly getting used to. It was understandable, really, not wanting to talk to someone you didn't know about personal matters. In fact, Clara had been doing that the whole time she had been with them, so who was she to judge?

It would have been easy for her to tell the truth about why she was there, but the chances of them letting her stick with them as long as she had would have dropped exponentially. And now, if she told them the truth, they'd never trust her, then she'd never get to Karli Morgenthau.

Leaving the building, Sam and Bucky's attention was pulled to a whooping siren, Lemar Hoskins and John Walker leaning the patrol car making the noise. 'Gentleman,' Walker waved them over. 'Good to see you again.'

'Stay here,' Bucky told Clara, and she felt inclined to do so. John Walker wasn't exactly creating the most friendly of environments.

'Yep,' she nodded, leaning against a wall of the building, listening in to their conversation from afar.

'If we divide ourselves, we don't stand a chance - you guys know that,' Walker told them.

'So, what've you got?' Sam asked.

'Well, the leader's name is Karli Morgenthau,' he said. 'We've been targeting civilians who've been helping Karli move from place to place.'

'They geotagged a location, then scrambled the signal,' Hoskins explained, Clara knowing all of this already. 'But our satellites have found their symbol popping up in various displaced communities all across Central and Eastern Europe.'

'We think that she's taking the medicine she just stole to one of these camps,' Walker finished.

Bucky lent against the patrol car with one hand against the roof. 'Well, there are hundred of those all over the planet since The Blip. So I guess you'll just have to look real hard.'

'Good thing I have twenty-twenty vision then, huh?' Walker commented, not sounding nearly as witty to Clara as he thought he had.

'Where is she now, Walker? Do you know?' Bucky asked, clearly thinking the same as Clara.

As he spoke, Walker raised his voice, frustration more than evident. 'No, we don't know, Bucky. But it's only a matter of time before we find out.'

'Things are really intense for you, aren't they?' Bucky jabbed.

'Take it easy,' Sam stepped in. 'Look, Walker's right. It is imperative that we find them and stop them. But you guys have rules of engagement and all kinds of authorisations you have to get - We're free agents. We're more flexible, so it wouldn't make sense for us to work with you.'

Bucky and Sam began to turn away, Clara standing up from leaning against the wall as they did, ready to join them again. 'A word of advice, then,' Walker called after them. 'Stay the hell out of my way.'

He and Hoskins walked away, looking as arrogant as ever. 'God, something about that guy...' Clara commented, giving a fake, dramatic shiver as she watched them leave.

'Yeah, I know what you mean,' Sam agreed, turning to begin down the road, hoping to find a place to rest for the night. 'So what are you thinking?'

'Well, I know what we have to do,' Bucky admitted. 'When Isaiah said "my people"...'

'Oh, don't take that to heart. That's not what he meant,' Sam tried easing Barnes' worries.

'No, he meant HYDRA. HYDRA used to be my people.'

Sam sighed, catching onto what Bucky was hinting towards. 'Not a chance.'

'What?' Clara asked, her curiosity rising.

'Walker doesn't have any leads,' Bucky reminded Sam.

'I know where you're going with this, and no.'

'Where? Where're you going with this?' Clara pressed.

'He knows all of HYDRA's secrets. Don't you remember Siberia?'

'Siberia... Siberia...' Clara mumbled trying to jog her memory of anything she had read that was S.H.I.E.L.D. related that had happened there. She looked up at the two men again. 'What happened in Siberia?'

'So you're just gonna go sit in a room with this guy?'

Bucky hesitated at first, then spoke firmly. 'Yes.'

'Okay, then,' Sam gave in, knowing he wouldn't be able to stop Bucky doing anything he put his mind to. 'We're gonna go see Zemo.'
