Chapter Forty-Six - Returning Ally

'Thanks, Spider-Man,' Clara grinned as Peter lowered her gently to the side street.

'No problem, err...' Peter frowned under his mask. 'You need a name - we'll figure it out later.'

'I don't need a name,' Clara made a face. 'But we do need to talk about what you're hiding in your room.'

'How did you-?' Peter sighed. 'It was Aunt May, wasn't it?'

'Oh, yeah, she told me everything,' Clara lied. 'Like, all of it.'

'Ah, man. I really wanted it to be a surprise.'

'Well, if it helps, I really like the part with the, err, what are they called again?' She trailed off, looking into the distance thoughtfully as she probed for clues.

Peter cocked his head to the side, folding his arms. 'You don't know anything about it, do you?'

She shrugged, pressing her lips into a thin line. 'It was worth a try. Go protect the neighbourhoods, Spider-Man.'

'Uh-huh,' Peter said, taking the attempt gain that information in good jest. 'You aren't finding out anything. You would have earlier, though, if you hadn't gotten distracted...'

'Wait, what? Tell me now! We have time!' She tried, the end of the sentence covered slightly by the sound of several police sirens passing the side street.

Peter starting stepping away, holding his hands up in a shrug. 'Sorry! I have neighbourhoods to save and bad guys to stop,' he told her.

'But-' Clara tried again, a string of webbing shooting out to strike the edge of the roof above them.

'Go and stop the Flag Smashers, soon-to-be-named superhero!' Peter called down as he launched himself up onto the roof tops. He stopped before continuing away, peering down at Clara from the edge and pointing a finger at her. 'And be safe.'

'I'll try!' She shouted back. 'Do me a favour and do the same?'

'When don't I?' He said, ducking out of view as he made his way back to Queens.

'A lot of the time,' she winced, knowing he wouldn't hear her. She turned to the main street, seeing more police cars whizz past, their sirens sounding, too.

Clara did as she usually did heading into police-heavy areas, and felt the shift in energy as she became invisible. She moved past the dozens of armed officers, all either standing with weapons aimed up at the building surrounding them, or with the weapons held at ease as they worked as crowd control.

'Sergeant Barnes,' she heard near her, knowing it must have been close in order for her to hear it over the bustling surroundings. Clara saw Bucky stepping around a barricade, one of the officers beside it being the one to have spoken the greeting.

She upped her pace to catch up to him, slipping through the barricade as he had done. 'Sergeant Barnes,' she said, echoing the other man's words, deepening her voice as she did.

'Where?' He grumbled, looking in the general direction of her voice, seemingly unamused by her arrival.

It was his fault for making her feel comfortable enough to be anything less than professional around him, she thought to herself. 'Right here,' she told him, walking around a marble pillar to appear out of sight from the crowds.

He dipped a hand into a jacket pocket, bringing it back out with a new comm piece for Clara. She took it, placing it snug in her ear and hearing Sam already speaking into his. 'By the way, I called in some back-up.'

'Excuse me, Sir?' Someone approached them; a man in a suit jacket and a beanie giving Bucky a suspicious look. 'Are you supposed to be here?'

'Err, are you?' Clara asked, seeing the distinct lack of body armour and a badge of any kind. She narrowed her eyes, feeling something odd about the man, and she realised there was some kind of electrical energy radiating from their face.

'Relax,' he said, a small smile twitching at his lips as he appreciated the speed of which Clara had given into her suspicions and scrutinised the stranger. As he spoke, his voice morphed into a more familiar one, a hand reaching up to press a finger to his temple. A pattern of hexagons waved across their face, as it flickered from one to another. Sharon Carter appeared beneath a sheet of flexible material that she pulled from over her amused expression. 'It's me.'

'Sharon? What the hell are you doing here?' Bucky asked, peering into the crowds of armed officers to make sure none of them had noticed her.

'Relax,' Sharon repeated, stepping between Clara and Bucky and continuing towards the entrance of the GRC headquarters. 'No one's looking for me here.'

'Is that Sharon?' Sam asked.

'Unfortunately,' Bucky muttered, him and Clara glancing to each other before following behind the woman. Unsurprisingly, Clara's suspicion towards the woman didn't fade at all when she saw it was really her. She hadn't forgotten about their first encounter in Madripoor.

Sharon rolled her eyes at Bucky's comment. 'Hey, Sam, I thought I'd get the band back together.'

'Thank you. You're risking a lot by coming here.'

'Yeah, well, I hear pardons aren't all they're made out to be.'

'They'll move on the building soon, be ready,' Sam told them.

'Got it,' Bucky said.

Clara jogged a step to catch up to Sharon. 'Was that a photostatic veil?' She asked, doing her best to hide the suspicion that still lingered. 'Can I see it?'

Sharon didn't seem very surprised, nor confused by the request, which in itself puzzled Clara. 'Here,' she handed it to her.

Clara took the thin, translucent material from her, feeling along the surface with her fingertips. 'It's S.H.I.E.L.D. tech,' Clara observed, frowning slightly as she felt the technical markers of the agency, and feeling the ways in which it had been altered since it's manufacture.

'Old S.H.I.E.L.D. tech,' Sharon corrected.

'Old?' Clara pressed, wanting to know where the woman had gotten it from. The device wasn't that old, it had without a doubt been made before the Blip, but not by much - a year at most.

'I kept it from my time as an agent,' she explained. Clara once again forcing her expression to remain neutral. She had caught her in lie. Now it wasn't just a gut feeling Clara was basing her belief on.

Sharon reached out hand, holding it palm up in a gesture that asked Clara to hand the mask back. 'Of course,' she offered a faint smile as she returned the photostatic veil. 'Makes sense.'

'Sharon, Bucky, what's going on on your end?' Sam's voice came over the comms.

'Nothing, all quiet,' Bucky answered, doing as he had been doing since they arrived and continuing to scan the crowds.

'No one's moving towards the building,' Sharon added.

'Karli's not coming in. She's trying to force everyone out.' Sam realised. 'It's a misdirect - We've gotta keep everyone inside.'

'I don't suppose you have a plan for that?' Clara asked as they headed into the GRC headquarters. Bucky stepped through first, he and Clara moving through the currently unmanned security process without issue, but Sharon set off an alarm on the scanner.

'Oops,' Sharon muttered, not actually seeming to care.

'You guys are gonna have to figure that out,' he told them. 'Just don't let 'em out of this building.'
