Chapter Forty-Seven - Well Executed
'Here's one of them,' Bucky nodded to their right as they walked further into the building. The Flag Smasher was dressed as an armed GRC agent, holding what was presumably a loaded assault rifle. 'We'll get the evac,' he added, gesturing for Clara to join him.
'This is an emergency evacuation,' a voice came over the loudspeakers system. 'Please proceed to your transports. Group One and Two will leave via secure vehicles in the basement. Group Three will leave via air support on the roof.'
'Sam, did you get that?' Clara asked, knowing he'd have to be the one to handle the helicopter.
'Yeah, I'll deal with it,' he confirmed.
'Mr Barnes, it's Karli,' said a woman handing him a phone. He took it from her, seeing the image of a red handprint on the screen before raising it to his ear.
'I'll get to the basement,' Clara told him, knowing the call would be a distraction orchestrated by Karli.
She jogged down the nearest stairway, disappearing completely halfway down and reaching the basement unseen. When she got there, she saw the two groups being herded into the two separate armoured NYPD vehicles. The Flag Smasher that Bucky had pointed out was closing the doors, placing some kind of locking mechanism over where the doors met.
Clara ran closer, trying to keep her footsteps quiet - not that it mattered as the engines turned over, covering any noise she made anyway. She mumbled a curse under her breath, seeing the wheels begin to turn, the cars pulling away from their positions.
Letting out a burst of speed, she jumped up onto the external step at the bottom of the doors. With one hand, she found a handle to grip onto at shoulder level, and with the other she held onto the handle fixed at hip level. Clara just hoped they wouldn't drive too fast.
'I'm with the evac,' Clara told Sam and Bucky.
'You've stopped them leaving, right?' Bucky asked, sounding as though his conversation with Karli had annoyed him.
'Err...' Clara started, a car horn beside sounding beside.
'You've stopped them leaving... right?' Sam pressed.
'There was a slight hiccup in the plan,' she explained. 'By the way, the Flag Smasher that you saw didn't get in the cars - they're still in the basement.'
'I've handled him,' Sharon informed them.
'How'd you manage that?' Sam asked in surprise, currently dealing with his own encounter with what Clara could only assume was another Flag Smasher.
'Mercury vapour, amongst other things...'
'Oh, yeah?' Clara asked, still clinging to the back of the vehicle, but finding it was becoming more and more difficult to do so as they sped down the streets. 'And where'd you get that from?'
'I'm following behind you Clara, don't do anything stupid until I get there.' Bucky had to yell to be heard over the traffic and the roar of the motorcycle he had stolen. Clara was about to argue against his insinuation, but Bucky interrupted her. 'I mean it.'
'You better speed things up,' Sharon continued. 'The chopper's about to take off.'
'Bucky!'
'I don't fly, man. That's your thing.'
'Can you guy's maybe stop arguing for a second?' Clara asked, perhaps a little hypocritically, peering round the side of the armoured car to see cement blockade being dragged out onto the road. 'They're setting up a roadblock about a hundred yards ahead.'
'I'll circle round,' Bucky told her, veering off into a side street to come up on the other side of that barrier.
The two cars slowed to a stop in front of the barriers, Clara only a little relieved as she unclenched her hands and felt her finger muscles relax.
Seeing the the group of Super Soldier serum-powered Flag Smashers run out onto the road, Clara jumped down from the step. They headed straight for the driver and passenger side doors, reaching for the handles that were instantly blocked by a violet shield. Clara stood with each hand stretched out and aimed at both vehicles, keeping the shields cast over them.
'Feel free to hurry,' she told Bucky as Karli turned to glare her way, spotting the faintest of lilac surrounding Clara's hands. She yelled as she charged towards Clara, the teenager's guard over the car doors falling as she instead crossed her arms in front of her, bringing a shield up between them. 'Oh, shit!' Clara cursed as Karli promptly skidded around the new shield, a fast reaction and something Clara definitely hadn't expected.
Before she could bring up another shield to block her new path, the woman slammed into her side, sending her falling to the floor and landing with a jolt running up her spine. Another somewhat unexpected move - one so unexpected, in fact, that Clara's guard was so completely and utterly dismantled that she reappeared in front of Karli.
'Bucky!' Clara called out, forcing herself out of the shock of it all, and twisting to the side to avoid an oncoming fist as Karli straddled her waist.
'Keep him distracted,' Karli growled. 'Give him someone else to rescue.'
'What do you mean?' One of the other Flag Smashers asked her.
'Light it up,' she stopped throwing punches for a moment, pointing to one of the cars. Clara used that brief lack of focus to make her move.
Using a somewhat complicated technique taught to her at SHIELD, she just about managed to pull Karli down to her side.
Karli looked up wide-eyed at the weaker girl now on top of her, and the flames erupting behind her. 'Morgenthau!' A voice called out, this one new to the mix.
Clara looked up and saw it was Walker headed their way, and Karli rolled out from under her. Clara let her, kind of wanting to see how it would play out between them. 'Seriously?' Karli huffed when she got to her feet to see Walker striding towards her.
'Let's finish this,' Walker said.
'I didn't mean to hurt your friend; I don't want to hurt people that don't matter,' she tried to tell him, Clara wincing at her careless words.
'Hold on!' Bucky yelled, and Clara turned again to see him pulling at the backdoors of the armoured car.
'You should really try and find a better way to word that,' Clara said to Karli, giving a friendly piece of advice before jogging the few paces away towards Bucky. 'Move.'
Surprisingly, Bucky did as told, and Clara placed a hand against the locking device. The tech was unfamiliar to Clara, the markers unrecognisable - non-existent, even. But, she still disabled it without much effort. The prongs stuck into the thick metal retracted, and the device fell to the floor.
'Come on,' Bucky urged those inside, opening the doors and ushering them out, along with the wall of heat urged inside.
The first man that climbed out helped lower more down to the tarmac. 'Be careful,' he told the last woman inside, holding a hand out for her to keep balance. Seeing there were no more inside to help, Bucky started back towards the Flag Smashers, but was stopped by the man grabbing his hand and shaking it almost erratically. 'Thank you for saving us.'
'You're welcome,' Bucky said hesitantly, he and Clara watching the man run for safety.
'I would love to be able to say the same,' Clara said, rubbing a hand on her lower back as she felt the ache from falling begin to grow. 'But you kinda just left me to deal with a super soldier, so...'
'You handled it,' he shrugged, earning a sharp look from her. 'You not doing the whole purple ghost thing?'
Clara shrugged, glancing at the many phones aimed towards the fight, and the many, many people watching with rapt attention. 'I'm sure they'll forget by tomorrow.'
A grunt of pain turned their attention to Walker, who was lying on his back with three Flag Smashers standing over him, raining down punches. 'I thought we were done with him?'
'Yeah, so did I,' she nodded. 'Should we help him?'
'Yeah,' Bucky nodded. 'Probably should.'
