The begining of it all
Restful sleep clouded my mind. I was never an early riser to begin with. I rolled over in my bed though I could hear the kids from the village calling me down.
"Hey, wake up, Link! It's morning already!" I could of sworn was Talo's voice. I groaned and got out of bed, scraching the back of my head as I made my way to the window. I saw Malo, Beth, Colin and Talo standing outside. I just walked away from my window and made my way outside. I walked up to the small group of the village kids, minus Lila, and having Talo speak first. To no surprise. "Oh, Link didja hear? They're selling a slingshot at the store right now! A SLINGSHOT!" I let out a faint laugh, this kid loved weapons.
"I wonder how powerful it is... I... I need... I must try it..." Malo said, most likely thinking aloud.
"Talo, if you and Malo want it so badly, just buy it at my parents' shop!" Beth said haopily.
"Do you see any rupees in my hand? I can't afford that thing! C'mon, Beth, can't you just loan it to us for a while?" Talo asked while crossing his arms.
"You know I'd get in trouble for that! If you two want it, save up your allowances or something." Beth retorted, a bit angry now.
"But our allowances are terrible... Aww, I wish I was born into a family with a slingshot instead of one with a waterwheel..." Malo said quietly, such a silly thing to say too. Having the waterwheel is a good thing.
"I'll see you guys later.." I said while slipping away and going to talk to Colin.
"Hi, Link... You have the day off work, today, right?" He asked me, I smiled and nodded.
"Yeah, I'm free for the day." I snickered at the comment I had made.
"So... I finished the fishing rod I was making. Link. I figured I'd give it to you first thing in the morning, but... My dad said 'You just have to wait until Link comes to get it!' So I didn't bring it to you..." Colin said while petting Epona.
"Haha, that's alright. I'm sure you did a great job aswell. I'll go now and pick it up." I said with a soft smile, the running off to the village. Upon entering the village I stopped to talk to Hanch.
"Well hey, 'morning Link. Got a day off from work today, m'boy?" He said and I nodded.
"Yeah, its nice to have a day away from the goats." I said with a light laugh.
"Not me. The wife's been hassling me... Today's the day to restock our store." I felt a little bad for him. He wasn't good-for-nothing. He just wasn't very good at catching things. "Look! See? Up in that tree..."
"Bees..." I murmured in disgust. I hated them with a burning passion. They always managed to find a way to sting me.
"Yeah, some Ordon bees built themselves a fine nest up there, and I was thinking about knocking it down... Our cat hasn't come home since yesterday, so the wife has been in a bad mood. At the very least I need to bring something home to her..." He said with a sigh.
"Good luck, I'll see if I can do anything to help." I said before running off to where I thought my master would be. But instead I found his wife Uli.
"Oh, um, good morning to you. If you are looking for my husband, he took his sword and left early this morning. But I must ask, Link... You have not seen some cradle come floating by here, have you? It is a baby cradle made of finely woven tree bark..." Uli said quickly. I shook my head no.
"I haven't, I'm sorry." I said softly.
"Oh, such a misfortune... How far could it have drifted, I wonder..." I sighed and left her be. I headed off but was stopped by Jaggle. before going very far.
"Yo, Link!" I heard his voice call.
"Eh?" I took a few steps back to get a decent view of the man. He was up on that rock formation again. This man takes far to many breaks. "Oh, Hey Jaggle.." I called out making sure he'd hear me.
"Hey, there you go! Over here! Yeah! Your voice carries well ,as usual!" He said while bringing himself to stand. "Think you can teach my little tykes to talk to someone from a distance?" He asked.
"I see nothing against it. All they have to do is raise their voices, I'll talk to them." I said while kicking up a little dirt.
"So listen, why don't you climb up those vines there, Link?" He suggested though it was more so an order. I did nothing to object and did as Jaggle asked. I climbed the surprisingly sturdy vines and pulled myself up. "Yo! There you are!"
"Yeah, here I am.." I murmured quietly to myself.
"Check this out..." He pointed over to a small cat, a brown and white cat. "You know Sera, at the general store? Well isn't that her cat over there?" Upon closer inspection, it was. Though from the distance it was still a bit hard to tell. "He's been sitting there next to my house, having a staring contest with the creek. You don't suppose he's gonna catch a fish, do you? Ha ha ha! A cat can't catch no fish!" He laughed about the cat and I let out a little sigh.
"Well it's possible.." I mumbled to myself. Every animal has the capibility to do things, humans and animals it's just little things that very and make it seem impossible.
"Anyway, that's not what I was meaning to tell you about. I want you to take a look at something..." He said while looking over his shoulder.
"Yeah, of course. What exactly..?" I said while looking to where he was, it was another rock formation.
"See that grass growing there on the edge of that rock? Haven't I seen you whistling with that stuff?" He asked while looking back at me.
"I whistle on horse grass..." I said while taking a closer look at the odd type of grass.
"I figured it was pretty rare to see it growing in a place like that, so I thought I'd let you know." Jaggle said while putting his hand to his hip. "I bet you could hop across these rocks with a little force couldn't you?" I nodded.
"Yeah, I just need a running start." I smirked and bolted off and onto another rock formation, then a roof and another rock formation landing next to the patch of hawk grass. I snickered and pressed it to my lips. I summoned a hawk and it perched itself up on my arm. I looked straight ahead and saw a mischievous little monkey holding Uli's cradle. I sent the hawk after the monkey and it brought the cradle over. I smiled and ran off to where Uli was standing by the creek.
"Oh! Link! That cradle!" She said while putting her hand to her mouth, a sweet smile playing on her lips. "Did you go to the trouble of finding it for me? My thanks to you! Oh, that reminds me! There is something I am supposed to give to you... Do you think you can carry the cradle and come with me back to my house?" She asked happily.
"Of course and miss Uli there is no need to thank me, really." I said softly. She began walking towards her home and I followed behind.
"My thanks to you, Link" She said again and I set the cradle down on her porch. "Yes, yes... I had nearly forgotten... I am supposed to give you this... Alright here you go!" Uli handed me a fishing rod. I smiled bightly as I held onto it. It was no surprise that it was well made, Colin had a talent for these sorts of things. "It is a little... unpolished." I let out a little laugh. Of course it wasn't perfect but it was still durable. It didn't have to be perfect of me to be happy. "My son, Colin, made this under the instruction of his father. You can use it if you like." I smiled and put the fishing rod away.
"I plan on using it, I wouldn't want Colins hard work to go to waste. Thank you Uli. I'll see you around." I said before taking off. I walked to Jaggle's home. I knocked and entered to speak with his wife, Pergie. "Hello Pergie!"
"Hi, Link. Welcome. If you're looking for my hubby, he took a break from working and went outside. I wouldn't be surprised if he's taking a nap somewhere..." She said witha faint sigh. I let out a little laugh because it was funny. Jaggle was always taking breaks and napping outside. "He's in the middle of making a shield for Colin's dad, Rusl, right at the moment." She pointed up at Jaggle's work shop area. "See it? Right over there. Though it looks far from being done... Sorry you came all this way to find him out and about.." I smiled at her.
"I know, I just wanted to come say hello. Well, I'll leave you be. I'm going to take Sera's cat home.. or at least try to." I headed out with that and made my way around Jaggles house to where the cat sat. I ignored the cat. Knowing that it wanted the fish I took out the fishing rod Colin made me. I cast my line and sat for a while.. or what felt like an eternity till I finally got a bite. I quickly reeled it in. I had caught a small greengill. Though it flopped off my line and onto the ground. Sera's cat snatched it up and bolted across the village and back home with the fish. I dropped and sat on the ground watching the comical scene play out before me. "Yep... This is Ordon Village alright." I shook my head and took a dive into the creek. I swam across to the other side of the village. I bolted into Sera's house to be greeted by her and her cat. "Oh, my! Link! Come in! Oh, you must simply hear this! My little kitty is so amazing! Today, he caught a fish all by his little old self! How do you think he caught it? Maybe he's a genius! Ohhh, just look... Isn't he so cute, the way he laps up that milk?" I smiled and nodded.
"Yes it's very cute." I said with a small smile playing on my lips.
"Say, m'dear, why don't you have some, too! I'm in a good mood, so it's on the house today!" She said before tossing the bottle at me. I luckily caught it.
"Thank you, I'll bring you the empty bo-" I was cut off shortly after I began speaking.
"Oh, don't worry, you don't have to return the empty bottle, m'dear. You can reuse it-- you know, put something else in it. Recycling is a very important thing thing m'dear! I'm sure you'd never do anything of the sort, but kids these days toss things out like the whole world was disposable! It's criminal! So, what do you say m'dear? Is there anything you want today? Feel free to look around." I smiled and did so. But much to my disapointment, I didn't have any rupees. I sighed and hung my head.
"It's best if I go, I'm not able to buy anything as of yet... I left my wallet at home." I said with a shy smile.
"See you again soon." I nodded and left. I felt bad, I had forgotten my wallet when Colin and the others woke me. I rushed back to my tree house and empied out my wallet. I counted my rupees. I had just enough to buy the slingshot. 30 rupees. I snatched up the rupees and refilled my wallet. I ran back to the shop and smiled.
"Hello Sera!" I greeted her once more.
"Welcome, m'dear! Interested in something?" She asked. I nodded.
"The slingshot." I said flatly.
"Do you want to buy it, m'dear?" I once again nodded.
"Yes."
"What are you doing buying a slingshot, you naughty thing? You're too old for toys! Will you at least let the kids play with it? Oh, I should tell you, if you happen to run out of pellets, you can also use pumpkin seeds." I noded. A big smile plastered on my face. I set down my wallet on her counter and see took the rupees. I took the slingshot once my empty wallet was returned.
"Thank you Sera I'll see you around." I then took my leave and headed back to where Malo, Talo, and Beth were hanging out, outside of my tree house. I thought that I might as well let them play with it since the boys wanted it so badly.
"Ah, just in time, Link! I just delivered something to your room! Oh, I see you got the fishing rod. Colin will be pleased. And it works better than you would think right?" Rusl said making me take notice. I smiled at him
"It really does. I'm surprised it was Colin who made it." I said giving the boy quite a bit of credit.
"Well, have a good one..." He said. I waved and then ran up to my house. I looked at the latter and saw a Skullwalltula, I whipped out my slingshot and killed it with a single shot. I released a sigh of releif now that it was gone. I climbed up the latter and walked into my home. I opened the door to find a package laying on the counter. I opened it to find a wooden sword. A smile spread across my face as I now had a practice blade. I strapped it to my back and ran back out side, not even bothering to use the latter I jumped down and landed on my face. Failing miserably.
"Hey guys! Check it out!" I said while tossing up the slingshot.
"Link has a slingshot! WHOA!" Talo yelled. Beth smiled and clasped her hands together.
"Wow! You had enough money to buy it, Link?" I smirked.
"What's the fun in seeing something and not getting to play with it? I was actually lucky, I had exactly 30 rupees." I sighed when I saw the boys at work. They were setting up targets. It took them a good 20 mintues to do so.
"Preperations complete..." Malo said, proud of their work.
"OK, wow, this is great! Let's see how powerful that slingshot is! Hit the targets and those scarecrows!" Talo said while basically bouncing in excitment.
"I can't believe you two brats are so obsessed about this. It just shows what little boys you both still are. These two will never let it go, Link. Just show them." Beth said in her voice of reason.
"I intend to." I smirked and pulled back the sling shot. I aimed and hit a target and it pretty much shattered into a million pieces.
"Whoa! You hit it! You hit it!" They all cried out in glee.
"I thought you weren't interested, Beth..." Malo said while shooting the girl a glare. I ignored them and quickly fired and knocked out all the target and the two scarecrows.
"Whoa! Amazing, Link!" They all cried out.
"Gee, you really are amazing, Link!" Talo said with a big grin slapped on his face.
"Yeah, you are! You can use swords and slingshots and everything!" Beth said all dreamily.
"Hey, yeah, that reminds me, you've got to teach us how to use a sword, too! Seriously! Lately these monkeys have been coming out of the woods and playing tricks on us! We want to get them good!"
"I dunno, Talo...."
"C'mon, teach us to use a sword!" Talo basically commanded.
"Alright, I guess I don't have much of a choice." I said with a sigh.
"YES!" Talo exclaimed and the two boys rushed to repair the scarecrows.
"All right! First off, we wanna see that move! The slice!" Talo said. I did as I was asked, I swung at the scarecrow horizontally making it shake violently from side to side. Talo copied my action.
"Wow! A horizontal slice! Was that it? Was it?" Talo asked excited as ever.
"Yes..." I responded like a tired parent being hounded.
"I think I've seen you do a vertical slice before, too. All right, next..." Talo said with a big grin.
"Ooh! Ooh! I want to see that other move, Link!" Beth said sweetly.
"...Oh, please. The stab?" Malo said while averting his eyes. I complied and stabbed the scarecrow.
"Ooh, Link! Just amazing! Since you're at it, how about you show us that other move... Y'know, that little twirly thing you do! I love that! What do you call it? A spin attack?" Beth said all excitedly. She was really getting into it. I did the spin attack while letting out a grunt. "Ooh, WOW! Thanks, Link! I'm sorry you have to waste your time with these little brats when you must be tired from doing all the important stuff you do!" Beth said while swaying from side to side.
"It's really not a waste of time Beth. It's actually kinda f-" I was cut off once again by Talo.
"Hey! Wait! You've gotta show us the jump attack before you go! You know the one where you go HYAAH! and leap through the air!" I sighed and hung my head. I took a few steps away from the scarecrow and jumped up swinging my sword down with quite a bit of force yelling
"HYAAH!" As the wooden sword made contact with the scarecrows head. Destroying it and leaving a pumpkin behind.
"WHOA!" The three gasped wide eyed.
"Thanks Link! So, uh, I... I think I get it... Kinda... Hmm... Maybe not... So this means that anytime one of those naughty monkeys shows up... WAH!" All four of us turned. We saw a monkey with a pink flower near it's ear. "C'MERE YOU!" Talo yelled while chasing after the poor thing.
"HEY! WAIT!" I yelled as Beth and Malo feel into step with Talo going after the monkey. I hung my head and mouted Epona. I ended up chasing after those silly and quite stupid kids. I saw Beth standing alone. She was smart enought not to go into the forest at least.
"Talo and Malo went chasing like crazy people after that monkey. I can't keep up with those two..." Beth said shyly. I sighed, I had higher hopes for Beth... she would of followed behind if she could. I continued to ride through the woods till I caught sight of Malo. I stopped Epona and spoke to Malo.
"...They went that way. The rest is up to you, Link..." I sighed at Malo's comment. Just great. I used my spurs on Epona and crossed the bridge into Faron woods.
"Talo.. you idiot you better be okay..." I said while hanging my head. "You better not have gotten into any trouble..." My tone grew more so worried. I was like a big brother to those boys.
