Prologue • Dr. Midoriya

"I learned at a very young age that people are not created equal. Speaking from personal experience... But, that's okay! Most adults never get to be what they wanted to be as kids.. I wanted to be a hero, like most, and I knew that desire to help people would never go away, so, I became the next best thing!"

"Dr. Midoriya, what is this?" A young girl with wavy blond hair pointed at the large contraption filling a corner of the young man's office. Midoriya looked up from the paperwork piling on his desk and smiled at her.

"Oh! That's a spare Centrifuge!" Rubbing the back of his head to tug at his curly green hair, "They decided to put it in my office since I guess I spend the least time in here." He then nudged at the mound of papers disappointedly. He could never sit still long enough to do any paperwork.

The blond twins, a boy and a girl, both the age of eight, toured the small office, each noting the poor state that it was in. The walls were covered in sticky-notes, every surface, even uneven ones not meant for it, were used to hold other trinkets and papers. And though the room didn't smell, it was clear it hadn't been cleaned in a while. The longer the children looked, the darker red the young man's face turned.

"Knock, knock!" An older doctor with big round glasses and a bushy moustache covering his mouth poked his head in through the door. "Oh, you actually have guests?"

"D-dr. Tsubasa!" Midoriya straightened like a board and invited the man in. "Yes! These are two patients of mine here for their annual checkup! Anna and Johan! The-they both said they wanted to become doctors someday, so I thought I'd show them what it's li-like."

"Hm." The elder rubbed his chin. "Looks to me like the boy just wants to steal your stuff."

"Wh-haa-??" Midoriya spun around just in time to catch the kid slipping another paperclip into his coat pocket. "Johan, mind showing me everything in your pockets?"

Johan's face paled as he turned to the young doctor. After a second, he nodded sadly and handed all the little trinkets he'd snagged so far. Midoriya sighed in relief, thanking the boy for his compliance.

"What do these patients of yours have to do with heroes, anyway?"

"They're the adopted children of Rock Lock."

     "Ahhh..."

Standing again to face the elder, "Is there a reason you came all this way to see me?"

"Hm? Oh! Yes. I nearly forgot." Dr. Tsubasa pulled out a hastily folded sheet of paper. Midoriya approached and leaned closer to see what was written on it. It was a list of names under a recent report. "I can't believe it." Slapping the paper with the back of his hand, the old man started to complain. "They put you at the bottom of the list again! Even though you were the head-surgeon in charge of the operation! Did they even give you a bonus for your work??"

Seeing what this was about now, Midoriya stepped back and waved his hands before him, cheeks turning pink. "I-it really isn't that big of a deal! I- I'm still fairly new-"

"No kidding.." The elder rolled his eyes. He clicked his tongue at the twins. "Hey! You kids know this man right here is a prodigy in his field?!

"A prodigy!?" The young man hopped, his curls wilder than before. The two kids looked up at him curiously, prompting his face to redden.

"You're twenty-four and already the head surgeon of this hospital. I'd say that's a prodigy alright." Dang, the old man had so much sass.

"It's all thanks to you!" Midoriya deflected,

but the old man swatted it right back. "Please.. You were already ahead by a longshot before I started mentoring you."

Dr. Midoriya was trapped in his office by the elder, unable to escape. To avoid a nervous breakdown, he started zipping around in a cleaning frenzy. The elder chuckled.

"Teh..." Dr. Tsubasa placed his hands on hips, looked down, and shook his head. "If you keep acting this way, you'll continue to be trampled your whole life."

"I know that.." Midoriya stopped for a moment to stare with a hint of sadness down at a stack of papers in his arms.

Johan lost interest in the room, grabbed his sister by the hand, and led her out of there. Anna shyly waved behind her. "Bye, Dr. Midoriya."

"Byee." The young man smiled, now clearly faking it. His green eyes returned to staring down at the papers to more easily zone-out. "I don't care, though." Through a shuttered breath, he smiled. "As long as I get to make a difference and save lives, that's what matters."

"..." The elder sighed, taking off his glasses to clean. "You're a good kid... Maybe a little too good."

"Hmhm. You say that a lot, but I don't quite get what you mean."

The elder stepped closer, still cleaning his glasses with one hand, and pat the taller one on the shoulder. Not tall by much. He was a fairly small young man. Quite skinny and malnourished too. Overworked, no doubt. "Don't worry, kiddo. I'll get ya out of here real soon." Midoriya blinked at him curiously, prompting the elder to laugh. "Because if doctors had a ranking system like heroes do, I know you'd rank number one!" Following that, the elder left.

When he was alone, Midoriya rolled his eyes while smiling. "Number one, yeah right." He exited his room, immediately bombarded by a male nurse running through the hall.

"Dr. Midoriya, Dr. Midoriya, Dr. Midoriya, Dr. Midoriya!! Uravity sustained major fracturing in her left shoulder and ribcage! Her left lung has been punctured and may need replacing! We just stabilized her vitals, but she needs an emergency procedure pronto!"

"On it!" Dr. Midoriya followed the nurse to the operating room at once.

This wasn't an ordinary hospital. This was a hero-specific emergency hospital, meaning 90% of his cases were a matter of life and death.

Every day, he was fighting to save lives. Not just any lives, but the lives of those who saved lives.

This, he thought, evened-out the playing field a little. Not having a quirk of his own didn't mean much here. It brought him one step closer to being a real hero. A hero like All Might.

     ...Hopefully, at least.
