Chapter two
After knocking out some more guards and taking their keys he made his way to his destination; a large vault door. He grinned as he slipped a key into the lock but to no result. His stomach dropped as he saw a red light in the corner of his eye: there were two locks that needed to be used at the same time.
She groaned in frustration when she didn't find her prize in that section and moved into the area he was in to go look in the area across from it.
He turned around when he heard her approaching footsteps. He went into a fighting stance but eased up when she became visible. "Oh, it's you..."
She glanced at him. "Got whatever it is your after yet?" She asked him as she walked, not stopping to talk.
"I uh... I need to open both locks..."
She kept going. "So? Get two keys and unlock both locks."
"I have two keys, but they need to be used at the same time and I can't reach."
She stopped. "Did... Did you seriously not plan for this?" She turned and looked at him.
"I did! I planned it all out! Except... for this part..."
"How could you not plan for this? Didn't you scope this place out before coming to steal from it?" She asked him incredulously, very clearly surprised and confused on how he could have possibly not planned for this.
"It's nearly impossible to get by here during open hours!"
"I-" She sighed. "Look if I help you open the door to get your thing, will you let me get back to getting mine?" She asked.
"Yeah no problem. You still won't get any of my loot that's for sure."
"Good thing I don't want it." She approached him and held out her hand for a key.
He gave her the key and walked over to one of the locks.
She walked over to hers and inserted it and waited for him. "Alright."
"On three, okay?"
She nodded. "Yeah."
He started to count, "One,"
She turned the key causing the door to make a buzzing noise.
He rolled his eyes. "A bit too early now." He turned the key.
She turned in timing with his and the door unlocked. "There. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be going." she turned to leave.
A flashlight shone around the corner along with some footsteps approaching.
He quickly ran over to her and pulled her to the side.
She gasped and stumbled backward to keep from falling over as she was pulled inside the room and the door shut most of the way leaving a crack. "What the heck?!" She hissed at him.
"Sh!" He hissed and pointed out of the doorway.
She looked at him before seeing someone coming around the corner and her eyes widened and quickly but quietly shut the door so it seemed perfectly normal. They waited until they heard him pass.
She relaxed when they heard him disappear and turned to him. "Thank-" She cut off seeing him standing near the pillar in the center of the room with a glass case with an interesting box inside.
"Is... Is this what you were after?"
There was a wide grin across his face. "Oh, yes... this is exactly what I came here looking for."
"It's... a box... granted it looks nice but still..." She looked confused.
"It's what's inside the box that matters."
She raised an eyebrow, unsure of what could possibly be in the box but shrugged it off. "Well, alright then. I'll be going then to get what I came for then scram." She moved towards the door.
He was already removing the glass case which covered the box, carelessly throwing it over his shoulder and causing it to crash to the ground.
She winced at the noise and stared at the shattered glass before turning to him. "What are you doing?!" She hissed before the alarms started blaring loudly. "Oh, great!" She muttered, looking around.
"Listen, there's a sewer we can escape through there, or we can try and fight off the guards." He sounded somewhat confident in himself.
She stared at him in disbelief, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Do you even know where the sewer leads too?" She asked him before sighing and waving her hand. "Never mind. Fighting the guards will probably get us in more trouble than simple thievery but it would be easier to escape out of this building through a door or something rather than the sewers..."
As she spoke, he took off his backpack and began to rummage around it. Strangely he pulled out an old school pistol and a... bomb?
She turned to him and stopped. "You... have a pistol and a... Is that a LIT BOMB?!" She stared at him, dumbfounded. "WHY DO YOU HAVE A LIT BOMB?!"
"It's amazing the kind of stuff they have in the pirate exhibit." He shrugged.
"BUT ITS LIT!" She stressed as the fuse got shorter. She turned towards the door hearing the guards approaching. "Oh no..." She groaned. "Get rid of that!" She pointed at the bomb. "Who knows what'll happen if it goes off!"
He threw it out of the room towards the sounds of the guards.
Her eyes widened. "Not like-!" The bomb went off with a loud bang, making them both lose eye sight for a period of time and their ears ring loudly.
She coughed on the smoke and waved her hand as she stumbled around before seeing the guards were stunned as well and grabbed hold of his hand and pulled him along. "Come on! We gotta go!"
He followed her lead as they ran down a separate hallway.
She looked around, blinking, trying to dispel the spots in her vision. "Where do we go?!" She asked, looking back at him.
"There's an open door there!" He pointed to a branching room.
She nodded and let him run inside first, after all, he had whatever the heck that box was. She started to run after him but glanced at the door, reading the sign but only catching one word before he pulled her inside and shut the door.
Gunpowder. Which became much more obvious when he turned the lights on. Her eyes widened at the piles of gunpowder all over the room and looked at him.
"Oh... The gunpowder room..." He nervously chuckled. "This should be fine, it's practically ancient so it can't possibly ignite."
"There's still a chance so let's just-"
"I think they went in here!"
Her eyes widened. "Run!" She called, pulling him along as the door swung open and the guards opened fire.
As the guards began to fire the gunpowder began to turn red and sizzle.
"You know what? Maybe I was wrong about the whole ancient gunpowder can't explode thing!"
"You don't say!" She replied as they ran out the exit and outside the museum. They both quickly leapt over the little stone wall in the garden area and took cover, bracing for an explosion.
