Chapter 5

Cassidy cried out in surprise and stumbled back.

"Gah!" Mark screamed, holding his hands out in front of him.

She quickly stopped, doing a double take. "Oh! Sorry, I thought you were zombies or raiders! ... You're not... Raiders, are you?"

Cassidy looked at Mark, eyes wide. "No..."

"Of course we aren't!"

"We're just lost... and really confused." Cassidy added.

"Okay... None of this makes any sense..."

"Exactly.... Exactly! None of this makes any sense! Quickly! Follow me inside!" She backed into the building, holding the door for them.

Cassidy looked at Mark, unsure if this really was the right choice but they had to find out if they could fix this...

He looked back at her, clearly unsure about their decision.

She shrugged and walked inside after her. "Better than out here with the zombies."

"I guess you're right there..."

She held the door for him. "Ladies first."

Mark rolled his eyes. "I'll wait for you, then." He stood right outside of the door.

She huffed at him before walking inside.

He followed, closing the door behind them.

"The zombies, the time, it's all out of whack!" She told them, running down a hallway. "I don't think any of this was supposed to happen," she told them as they walked into the lab room. "And I'm not just talking about the zombie apocalypse. That's weird enough on its own."

They heard a zombie groan and she looked over. "Excuse me a moment," she turned to face out the door and cried out as she fired her laser gun, making Cassidy's eyes widen.

Mark nervously glanced over at her, still questioning her choice to go here.

"Whew! Okay, sorry about that." She told them, lowering her gun and walking past Mark. "But that's not the half of it." She turned to them. "I think it's just a symptom of a greater underlying problem." She explained.

Cassie slowly followed after her as she walked around, giving a few small nods and glancing at Mark.

"Oh okay...?" Mark looked more than confused. "And what do you expect us to do about it?" He reached up to touch a piece of equipment hanging from the ceiling.

"Ah! No, shut up." She smacked his hand off the chemical shower chain. "I don't think you're supposed to do anything because I'm still not quite sure that any of this is still happening."

"Um, what?" Cassie asked.

"Well, more specifically, none of this should be happening, and yet it is."

"Uh..."

"Look, a zombie apocalypse doesn't just happen all at once. It's a slow build over a few weeks, even by the most aggressive of theoretical scenarios." She gestured to both of them with her open hand. "Haven't you two noticed time being a little funny lately?"

Cassie blinked a few times, slightly shaking her head as if trying to clear her vision for a moment, stumbling a little before turning towards the door, hearing another zombie.

"Oh, excuse me." she started firing again and turned back to them. "Sorry about that."

Mark jumped back. "Uh... no! No! Time hasn't been funny at all!"

"Really?" She asked in disbelief. "You haven't noticed things going unnaturally fast?"

Cassie stumbled a little, eyes glazing over as she saw quick glimpses of different things.

Last night, Mark looking at the map he had then the next morning with Mark greeting her when she woke up...

"Things happening out of order from one another?"

She stepped back a little, seeing a vision of the scientist shutting a lid on Mark's hand.

"Strange coincidences,"

The helicopter and the car in the middle of nowhere...

"Bizarre memories of things,"

Mark in what looked to be a prison outfit and a truck smashing into a brick wall...

"that you haven't even done yet?"

Mark in his suit hanging from a chain he was gripping onto over a large seemingly bottomless pit then Mark talking to a security guard outside the museum....

"All within the last 24 hours?"

She was brought back to reality where they approached something that Mark reached out and started to open just like that brief vision she saw. Cassie watched in confusion as she slapped Mark's hand, closing the lid on his finger.

"GAH!" He winced and pulled his hand away, shaking it as pain surged in his arm.

"My point is there's something out there that's screwing up time and space. Some single thing is mixing a bunch of different timelines and realities together into a single dimension. They're all overlapping, and I know just how to track it." She moves towards the door and throws it open.

They saw someone reach into the room. "Spare any food?"

"RAIDER!" She fired the gun at them and they fell out of sight with a small, "Why?!"

Cassie's eyes widened as she shut the door and turned back to them with a smile. "Whew! And I know just how to track it down!" She repeated and moved towards her desk.

"I.... I don't think that was a raider... I-I don't-" Mark stuttered, wandering over to a lab table and picking up a device. "Is this some sort of gun?"

She was typing on her computer and turned to him at the question and smiled. "No! It's a scanner!" She turned it on and electricity zapped Mark's finger as she took it from him. "It's gonna help us track down the anomalies!"

Cassie winced watching Mark get zapped.

"OW!" Mark quickly stepped away from her and over toward Cassie, holding onto his injured hand.

"It's like a dowsing rod but for temporal inconsistencies." She waved it around as she spun in a circle, ignoring Mark's pain.

Cassie glanced at Mark, a bit concerned for his hand.

"I-I'm fine." He reassured her before turning back to the scientist. "That uh... That makes complete sense."

Cassie gave him a small nod before looking at the scientist.

"Yes, it does." She turned her attention back to them. "So what I need from you two," She pointed at them both. "Is to accompany me," She picked up the scanner so it aimed at Cassie. "As we hunt down the..." She trailed off as the scanner started rapidly beeping, making her look up at Cassie who stepped back, confused. "Anomaly... This can't be right." She muttered as she looked down at the device.

"Huh? What's happening?" Mark looked at Cassie concerned.

She moved up to Cassie and started scanning her all over making Cassie shift a little. "Oh my gosh! You're the anomaly!" She jumped back and pointed at Cassie, eyes wide.
