Chapter 12

Mark sighed and looked down. "Well, that was a complete waste of time."

She shrugged. "At least we're alive." She replied, looking around the cell.

"I guess. It still feels like we did all that for nothing." He shrugged.

"Worth a try at least." She replied, looking around for a way out.

"We can still find a way out of here." He agreed.

"Yeah... Just gotta find something..."

"There should be some kind of exploit we can take advantage of..."

She nodded as she looked around, feeling the walls.

Mark aided her in looking at the walls before an idea dawned on him. "I know! What about the floor?"

"The floor? I mean... Do we have anything we can dig with?"

He got down on his knees and knocked on the floor, listing various types of materials as he did so. "Concrete... topsoil... clay... lime... Yeah, we could dig our way out of here."

Cassidy knelt down with him, watching him. "Okay..." She replied before noticing a glow from behind the toilet? in the corner. "Wait, what's that?"

"What, you see something?" He looked up at her.

"There's a crack or something in the wall..."

"There is!" Mark stood and went over to the wall. "Behind the toilet!"

She followed him. "Should we check it out?"

"No harm in trying."

She nodded and grabbed hold of the toilet. "Help me move this."

Mark went to the other side and pushed it.

They quickly moved it out of the way and looked at the crack. "Its almost like a door?"

"There's some sort of... wooden panel over it?"

"Huh..."

"Ah... should we move it?"

"Sure?"

Mark pulled on the side of the panel and it swung open like a door.

And as he did, a skeleton fell out causing Cassidy to leap back and scream in surprise and horror.

"Oh!" Mark jumped back, his hand accidentally grabbing onto Cassidy's shoulder. "I uh... that's probably fine..."

"Probably fine?! It's a freaking skeleton, likely from a real human!" She hissed, ignoring him grabbing her shoulder as she was too panicked to care.

"They died, most likely... from unrelated causes to this. Which is very structurally sound, by the looks of it."

"ITS A SKELETON!" She cried out. "Are you really suggesting we go in there?! Cause I have one thing to say about that. HECK FREAKING NO!"

"We can either go through here or dig our way out!" He argued.

"Dig it is cause I'm not touching that!"

"You sure?" He looked at her skeptically.

"Uh, what does HECK FREAKING NO, mean to you?!"

Mark slowly nodded. "Yeah, probably not the wisest choice to go pokin' your head in unknown holes."

"Especially when they have SKELETONS IN THEM!" She stressed before turning away and kneeling on the ground. "Gosh, I never should have mentioned that..." she muttered, trying not to be sick to her stomach.

"You good? We can uh... We can sit here for a second if you need to." Mark sat down next to Cassidy and put a hand on her shoulder.

"I- Y-Yeah... C-Could... Could you get rid of that please?" She asked, gesturing vaguely at the skeleton.

"Ah, yes." He promptly stood up and kicked the skeleton back into the tunnel, covering it back up with the panel.

"Thanks..." She replied, resting her head in her hands and taking deep breaths in an attempt to calm back down.

Mark went back to sitting by her, placing his hand on her back.

She finally calmed down and gave him a tired smile. "Thanks... Now let's get outta here shall we?"

"Yeah." Seemingly out of thin air Mark pulled out a spoon.

"I- Where'd you get that?"

"When we were in the kitchen." He pulled out another one and handed it to her. "Got you one too."

"Thanks." She accepted it. "Let's get started, shall we?"

"Yup! This'll be easy. I have a master's degree in digging. I won second place at nationals." He bragged.

"There's a degree, let alone national competition for that?"

"You haven't heard of it?!"

"No. It sounds... interesting."

"You should've gone there, it would've been a blast with you around."

She felt her face warm up and quickly looked down at the ground, sticking her spoon in the floor firmly. "Are we gonna dig or not?"

"Race you?" He asked.

"Not much of a competition if you've won nationals." She replied, not looking up.

"Chickening out, are we?"

"Keep teasing me and I'll use this spoon to stab you." She replied but there was a playful tone to it.

"Hey! That's no way to treat the man that's helping you escape jail!"

"If you had actually made a plan to not set the alarms off then we wouldn't be here." She replied.

"I didn't know the alarms would go off!"

"You practically threw the glass case off."

"I was excited, okay?!"

She rolled her eyes. "Whatever, just show me your digging skills you're so proud of, would you?"

"With pleasure." He began to dig into the surprisingly soft ground.

She stared in surprise as within what felt like seconds there was a large hole. "Wow."

Mark stood up and wiped the sweat off of his brow. "Sorry it took me so long. A little rusty after a few years, but it'll do."

"Are you kidding?! That was amazing! Look at the size of this hole!" She replied, gesturing at the hole.

"I could still go faster, though." He crossed his arms.

She looked up at him. "You'll have to show me some other time cause we're just about ready to get outta here!"

"Here we go!" Mark took ahold of Cassidy's hand and stood near the edge of the hole. "Ready?"

She nodded. "Ready!"

"Bottoms up!" He jumped down, taking her with him.

She gave a small cry as they fell through the hole.

He began to guide them through the tunnel.

She kept her hand gripped on his so she didn't get separated and followed behind him.

Eventually they reached a part that went back up to the surface, and they found themselves in the warden's office.

She looked around before seeing the warden holding onto the box. "There." She whispered.

Mark jumped back when he saw the warden, his eyes open and staring right at the two.

She tensed when she noticed but realized he wasn't moving. "I... Think he's asleep..." She whispered

"With his eyes open?!" He whispered back as the warden began loudly snoring. "What a weirdo..."

She rolled her eyes. "Just get the box and lets go..." She hissed quietly.

"He's uh... He's holding onto it, He'll definitely notice if we take it."

"Maybe we can replace it with something?"

"Yeah but I don't see anything boxy around here."

"Uh... Oh!" She moved over and grabbed a plushie. "What about this?"

"Why does he even have that?" Mark asked before taking it from her. "I guess it will do, though."

"Alright. Let's do this."

He carefully stared at the warden before quickly taking the box out of his hands, replacing it with the plushie.

The warden gritted his teeth and with a couple of small movements, beheaded the poor plush.

Cassidy's eyes widened.

Mark looked back at her in shock before giving her the box and gesturing back to the tunnel they dug.

She clutched the box tightly and quickly climbed back into the tunnel.

He followed her, giving one last look at the warden before he left.

Cassidy climbed back into their cell with the box tucked under her arm before looking back to see if Mark needed help.

Mark climbed up shortly after, still looking a bit shaken as he looked at her. "Well, that was, um... that was weird."

"Y-Yeah. But hey!" She pulled the box out and held it in front of her proudly. "We got it!"

"We've got the box!" He jumped up and down in excitement.

"Do you want it back?" She asked.

He looked over at the tunnel. "I should probably clean that up first... Could you hold onto it for a bit longer, it'll be safe with you."

She nodded. "Okay."

Having already cleaned up the wood panel before, Mark moved the toilet back over to cover it.

She watched him since her hands were full.

He nodded at his work and went back over to her, reaching a hand out for the box.

She passed it over to him. "So, now what?"

"So... Do we open it now? Do we wait until we escape?" He asked, inspecting the box.

"Well, escape is probably the highest priority, right?"

"Definitely. But I mean, what's inside could help us. I've also got a foolproof backup plan."

She hummed. "Do you even know what's in it?" She asked. "Never mind, let's just get outta here first."

Mark nodded. "Yeah, good call."

"Alright, so what's the plan?"

"Hold onto this." He held the box out to her.

"Yeah," She took the box.

"Okay I got this..." Mark rubbed his hands together and took a deep breath before letting out a loud scream.

Cassidy jerked back in surprise, eyes widening as he screamed.

"Oh, no! I feel so sick!" He pretended to cry out in anguish. "Holy hell! Won't someone help me?"

Cassidy started to move towards him but jumped back when a guard came zooming down the hall and practically threw the door open the second he got it unlocked. "I came as fast as I could! Someone say they were sick or somethin'?"

"Not just sick. Dying!" Mark dramatically placed a hand over his head.

"No!" The guard quickly rushed to his side as Cassidy just stared at them, unable to move.

"Oh yes!" Mark stumbled over to the bed and leaned on it.

"No!" The man knelt next to him. "I'm going to call the medical team right now!" He tried to grab for his walkie talkie

"No, no, no, no, don't waste your breath!" He dramatically fell to his knees. "I'm too far gone. Oh, no! Oh, my only regret in life is not having one last conversation with my dying grandmother!"

"Oh, man! Grandma's dyin' too?!" He cried.

Cassidy just sat there in shock.

"Yes.!"

"What are the odds?!" The guard cried.

"But I could die peacefully... if I just heard her sweet voice one last time."

"Yeah... Wait, oh. I got an idea." He quickly stumbled around before pulling out a phone. "It's prepaid, it's got seven minutes and it's all yours." He handed the phone over to him.

Cassidy started to realize where this was going but stayed quiet.

"Thank you. Thank you. And I could also die peacefully if I had this moment in sweet privacy." Mark sobbed.

"Yeah," He sobbed a little before realizing. "Oh right, Sorry, I'm just stressed out about you and your grandma dyin'." He sobbed again. "I'm just an over emotional guard, I just gotta say that." He started walking out of the cell and down the hall, leaving the door open. "It's a sad day for me too. I'm gonna miss you... I'll need my phone back..." He disappeared down the hall.

As the guard left Mark perked right up, as if nothing ever happened.

Cassidy just stared at the open cell door, still in a bit of shock.

He looked at her, a sly smile on his face. "Well, that was easier than I thought it'd be."

She turned to him, a dazed look on her face as she processed what just happened.

"You okay?"

She didn't respond for a moment before seeming to come to again and swiftly punched him in the arm.

"OW!" Mark winced and held onto his arm. "What the heck was that for!?"

"You gave me a freaking heart attack, is what that's for! You idiot!" She hissed, anger written across her face as she shook a little.

"Hey! Can't you at least thank me for getting the phone?!"

"Thanks but warn me next time! I was genuinely worried about you!" she snapped, tears brimming her eyes, still shaking a bit.

"I'm sorry! I didn't have time to!" He began to look concerned, just now realizing how shaken she was.

"You had plenty of time to tell me the plan, at least a vague idea!" She argued.

She sighed, trying to calm down. "I- You really scared me... I thought you might be actually..." She trailed off.

Mark lowered his voice a bit and gave her a pat on the back. "I'm fine... don't worry..."

She stood there, taking deep breaths before punching his arm again, though much lighter this time. "I'm still mad at you..." She mumbled though she didn't sound it.

"I'll try to warn ya next time, then." He smiled at her.

She gave a small nod before looking up at the door. "So... We can just leave now?"

He shook his head. "No, that's too easy. We'll leave that as a backup plan for our backup plan."

"But- easy is good?"

"Hush." Mark held a finger up to Cassidy's lips. "I've got a call to make." He began to dial numbers into the phone.

She just stared at him before rolling her eyes. "To your dying grandma?" She replied a bit sarcastically.

"No. Did you really believe that?"

"Of course not. I was being sarcastic, Mister Oblivious."

"Whatever." Mark held the phone to his ear, his voice turning serious. "Wubba, this is Eagle Claw 14. The beer is cold. I repeat, the beer is cold."

"Roger that, Eagle Claw 14. ETA 5." The other answered him.

"What are you doing?"

Mark ignored her. "Awesome!" He hung up and set the phone down.

"Okay so?" Cassidy spoke up. "What's going on?"

"You'll see." He smirked.

"What is that supposed to mean-" She cried out as the wall suddenly broke open and the back of a truck was sitting there.

"Woah! Five seconds it was then!" He exclaimed, pushing Cassidy behind him so she wouldn't get hit by any of the wall debris.

"What the hell?!" She cried in surprise, hiding behind Mark then peeking out. "What-"

As the dust settled he grabbed her arm and began to head towards the truck. "Come on!"

She stumbled after him and hesitantly climbed into the back of the truck, still incredibly confused.

Mark threw out a few spare pieces of wood in the truck in order to make room for the two.

The truck quickly took off once they were inside.
