Chapter 10
Cassidy was led back to her cell by another guard who shut the door and locked it. "Think you're pretty cool, don't ya?"
Cassidy moved towards the bars slowly, reaching out for them.
"Out here running around, acting like a butthole."
She grabbed hold of the bars, listening, a bit confused.
"Well, guess what? Ya done hurt my feelings!" He started to cry. "You have no idea-"
She reached out in an attempt to grab his keys but he moved so his arm brushed her hand.
"You have soft hands-" He commented before continuing. "idea what that does to me. I hope you're happy. Dang it!" He stormed off.
Cassidy gave a quiet sigh and looked around her cell, seeing a small table and chairs, a curtain over the bars, a clothes line, a soft rug, a bunk bed with a table stand with a lamp next to it, a potted tree, toilet, and another table with a lamp, hourglass, and tv and some books on it.
She saw someone walk by with a small creepy chuckle before moving towards the bed.
She pulled the covers back and crawled in and laid back, not processing the person staring down at her from under the mattress above.
"Hey buddy, how ya doin'?" A familiar voice called to her.
She startled at his voice, realizing he was staring down at her and quickly climbed back out of the bed.
Yancy awkwardly smiled at her. "Looks like, uh— looks like it might be time to break out of here..."
She quickly shook off her shock and nodded.
"Ah... sorry about the voice thing."
She gave a small shrug of dismissal. There wasn't much she could do about it now so why worry about it right now.
Yancy lifted the mattress and sat up, taking out a black rag. "I'm gonna need you to put this on."
She stepped back and raised an eyebrow at him.
"Oh, listen." Yancy rolled his eyes. "I know every nook and every cranny in this joint. But if I'm gonna help you break out, you sure as hell ain't knowin' no nooks, nor no crannies. 'Cause if you know, then youse gonna tell others, and then theyse gonna tell others, and then suddenly everyone's breakin' out when no one should be breakin' out!"
Cassidy sighed before holding her hand out for the rag.
"Good move. Now, let's get going."
She tied it around her eyes before holding her hand out blindly.
He took her hand. "Watch your head." He began to walk.
She wanted to ask how she was supposed to while she was blinded but just followed him best she could.
He felt herself be pulled along, only hearing the sound of their footsteps. Suddenly there was a scratching noise followed by that of a door opening.
She looked a bit confused, unsure of where they were but just had to trust him.
"Keep your head low through this bit."
She nodded and ducked down.
They walked for a bit longer before Yancy spoke again. "Now, the timing's gotta be perfect on this one. It's easy. Just count in youse's head."
She nodded, a bit concerned about why something needed to be timed.
"Seven, five, one, seven, five, one... seven, five... and jump!" Yancy leaped down, taking Cassidy with him. They fell for a few seconds before landing in something wet.
She grimaced at the wet splashing up at her feet, and gagged on the smell that reached her nose.
"Now youse gonna have to hold youse breath for a little bit here." He told her.
She cocked her head at him with a look that simply said, 'Excuse me what' but non the less complied.
The water splashed around them as they walked. "Oh, boy. You never get used to the smell of that part."
She gagged again at the smell but continued to follow him.
They continued to walk some more until Yancy stopped. "Hey, youse, remember that pattern from before?" The sound of a door opening could be heard. "Forget that one 'cause this one's completely different. Don't get 'em confused."
She nodded at him.
"This one's five, six, seven, eight, five, six, seven, eight. Five, six, seven..." He paused and grabbed onto Cassidy's arm again. "And, jump!" He leaped again.
She leapt after him, bracing herself.
There was a large crash as they hit the hard ground.
She winced a little, her free hand moving to her side.
Yancy stood up and pulled her with him. "And repeat after me! Duck, twist, jump, pull, push, drop, jump, spin, spin, spin, reach up, pull hard..." He guided her through a series of obstacles.
She did her best to keep up with him despite the blindfold.
Suddenly Yancy took the blindfold off. "And there you have it. Free as a bird." He grinned. Cassidy had found herself on the other side of a large metal fence.
She blinked in surprise, looking around then back at him, making a small box with her hands.
"Yeah, oh, and I think this is youse's." He lifted up something and handed it to her through the bars. It was the box.
She stared at it before gingerly taking it into her hands. She carefully ran her hand down it's side before looking up at him and nodding in thanks.
He gave her a smile. "Yeah, I stopped by the warden's office to have a little chat. I saw that thing that youse walked in with, so, I dunno, I thought youse would want it back."
She nodded again, looking back down at it, thinking back to Mark.
"I'm... I'm sorry about youse's friend..."
She just gave a small nod, pulling the box closer to her chest and looking up at him before gesturing for him to come out with her.
"Me? Out there? With you?" He looked at her in shock.
She nodded.
"Hey, I... I done a lot of bad things, and, uh, hey, this is home..." He looked back at the prison.
She followed his gaze before nodding in understanding.
"Goodbye. For now, anyway. Maybe next time parole comes up, I'll give it a shot. Anyway, I better get back to it. You take care now, ya hear?" Yancy looked a bit upset.
She gave him a small smile and nod.
"Hey, visitation every third Sunday!" He grinned.
She gave a small airy laugh and nodded.
"Now youse should hurry on up before the guards show up. It was nice knowin' youse."
She waved goodbye to him before turning away with the box before hesitating and opening it up and pulling out a small piece of paper wrapped around the length of a key. She curiously unwrapped the paper and read it. 'This Universal Skeleton Key can unlock ANY lock ever made.' She carefully held up the key in awe before glancing back at the gates before sighing softly and walking away, pocketing the key before the box started to give off a soft glow, drawing her attention before the light engulfed her, making her wince away.
