Chapter 10: Corazon

The day Law had acquired your new heart and legs had came and went like the rise and pass of the sun that never seemed to sleep. To top it all off, it came as a surprise when Trafalgar Law's title as a Warlord wasn't void, how do you know this? Well, Surgeon made a special trip to the recent island's marine base. Of course the man had you returned to the golden submarine beforehand. If he didn't that would've been an even bigger social suicide than his appearance alone. Law had asked for a look about of the prisoners on death row within the base. In this time, Law gave every prisoner a check up until he found the youngest and healthiest prisoner of the bunch and quite literally stole his heart. The prisoner was on death row, he was going to die anyways, why waste his heart right? That's how the Surgeon thought of it at least. Back on track, none of the Marines of the base objected to the man's request of viewing the Death Row prisoners, which only meant Law were still upholding the title as one of seven Warlords of the Sea. But still, how does Law still have the title? He fought with Akainu, the new Fleet Commander of the Navy, survived, and stole you right out from under the Government's nose. Either the Government is oblivious to your existence as a Heart Pirate, or they think that his one sided brawl with Akainu was nothing to get their panties into a twist over. Maybe even both?

Truly confusing indeed.

Over the last few days, Law had been preparing the prisoner's heart to be transplanted into your frail body. A male's heart is naturally two times the size of a woman's, they work harder than a female as well. To give you this heart was coming as a risk, this heart could either make or quite literally kill you. Options were extremely limited at this point with no feminine heart donors on the last island, it was coming down to the wire, your current heart had at most a day's worth of fighting left in it. At this point, you had to do whatever was necessary.

"It's now or never, time to lie down," Law pressed delicately on your chest to lie down upon the cold steel examination table. You whimpered to the touch, the cold steel caused an eruption of goosebumps to attack your skin. You couldn't help but to resume fighting against his orders. Law growled slightly, crossing his arms. "You'll die if we don't execute this transplant right now!" The man barked.

Your orbs were flooding with tears, teeth clenched so hard your jaw strained against the pressure."Can't you just use your devil fruit powers and give the heart right now?" You asked so quickly Law just barely understood the question at all. Your nerves were all riled up, Law could tell you had a fear of this surgery and would do whatever means necessary to avoid it. Well, he won't allow it.

"It's not that simple," Law sighed, holding up your receiving heart encased in a glass box. The pink organ that beat within his hands every few seconds. "Normally, I can do that, but with you, I cannot," he answered briskly.

"W-why not?!" You complained.

Law has just about lost his patience. "The experiments from the Government has your internal workings all mixed around. If I just use my powers, the heart will just sit in your chest... You will begin hemorrhaging, or practically internally bleeding to death," that last comment really opened your eyes, yet it also made you freak out some more. At this point you were freaking out so much your dying heart will overwork itself into a heart attack right then and there.

"So... So you have to do my transplant surgery like a real surgeon? You can't rely on your powers..." You were still near tears.

"That is the case," Law agreed with a gentle nod of his head. "What's your reason for freaking out as much as you are Kessho? I almost always perform a surgery by hand rather the aid of my powers. Then again it also depends on if I like the person or not," he is a surgeon after all, you thought. Be foolish of him to rely on his powers more times than none.

A deep breath in, you were ready. "Ever since my first experiment with the Government... I just... I'm scared to death that I may never wake up," you admit with a sigh.

"Stop!!! Please Stop!!!" You flailed about, not allowing the scientists an opening as they closed in with syringes at hand full of a blue substance that looked as though electricity flowed through it like a swimmer in the water. The scientists had dull eyes that showed no interest, like mindless zombies closing in on their prey. One man after the other, they took hold of your arms and legs before the metallic tip of the surgical equipment pierced your flesh and everything went black.

"Can't count how many times I went into a vegetable state since my capture a little over a year ago... Not to forget I always wake up with a body part removed or added in without my okay..." The memories haunted you, they refused to leave, just a glimpse of a needle made your skin crawl and force your eyes another direction.

"Perfectly reasonable," Law hummed, prepping an IV for your surgery. Just the mention of the sterling silver needle make your heart pace with anxiety. "The surgery I will be performing today will consist of me removing your dying heart and replacing it with one of the strongest hearts I've ever laid my eyes on in all my years. To make you feel better," Law stared at you looking for the signal that you trusted him enough to move on with the surgery. Law was being so sweet, doing everything he could possibly do to make you relaxed, and he succeeded with a smirk plastered across his face.

"I... I trust you," you began breathing in all so slowly, your riled up nerves were finally taking a rest. You flinched, forcing your eyelids to a close to the cold metal needle penetrating the back of your hand. Another needle penetrating the forearm of opposite arm. You lifted your arms to see what exactly Law just did. Both arms had a small clear tube protruding where the needles were inserted. One tube led to a bag of crimson, the other a clear substance. Saline perhaps? No... No its not saline. Your body just felt heavy out of nowhere, mind going elsewhere.

Law must've read your mind, it was an easy task once you stepped into his life. "its a sedative... You'll be out in no time Kessho. When you wake up, you'll have a new heart and legs," with the slow drift of your eyelids to a light close, no sense in continuing his little sweet talk when you weren't mentally on earth. Law wanted to keep the conversation going just a few seconds longer. Just a few more seconds, he could've done something miraculous to show he'd never let anything bad come to you.

I can't promise such a thing...

"What's gotten into me?" Law shook his head justly while slipping on a pair of turquoise latex gloves to conceal his inked hands. "I may be a surgeon but I can't prevent anyone from dying... Even the best doctors can't save everyone on their to do list," Law had to stop himself from talking again. A buzzing pain etched into his skull, he brought a hand to his forehead applying pressure between his eyes. What's gotten into me? I'm mentally unprepared for this transplant...

Law's golden eyes traced over your frail yet beautiful sleeping frame. Even though you were forced into this state of unconsciousness, he's never seen your face look so young. A hand were clutched to his bare pained chest. The feelings were back, attacking Law's being at full force. He's abandoned these feeling all so long ago and now they've returned. It all felt like a freshly sharpened knife were planted dead square in his chest and weren't allowed to be removed. Law told himself he'd never care again, never love again, ever since the passing of his childhood hero of blonde hair and dark crimson make up that painted his angelic face of boisterous laughter and hope.

"I want you to remember me smiling..."

"(Y/n) is only another patient... I can't get attached," Law still clutched onto his chest. "Once I get attached... Everything will turn to shit, get stolen from me. Why'd I have to get attached to a girl who can die so easily?" That's a question Law won't put down. It just kept reappearing, like a pest, it won't ever die. "N-No!" Law grunted, clutching onto his chest harder than ever before.

It was my choice to save her on day one...

It was my choice to fight Akainu for her freedom...

It was her choice to save me when I was bleeding out that same day...

It was my choice to call her a Heart Pirate...

I fell in love and never realized it...

The Surgeon released his grip upon the flesh of his chest. "I love Kessho..." Law closed his golden eyes briefly before opening them back up. He could've sworn his eyes were playing tricks on him once again, but... Just like weeks back, that red string of thread had reappeared and tied his wrist to your own. Your half of the crimson thread was nothing like the last time he saw the fiber. The thread were all in a jumbled mess all tied to your wrist last time, and now... Now it were free of knots and so close to becoming untied from you. With each second to pass, the thread only seemed to fade and untie. It was now or never... The Procedure must commence.
