21. In Which a New Monster is Born

"My patience is wearing thin, Draco," Mythas Lester as the dementors parted, revealing the blonde on his knees and panting.

Draco Malfoy looked up, wiping the sweat off his brow. "Anyone but you," he mumbled, "anyone but you."

"Why have you not saved Potter yet?! You had one job."

"I'm not going along with your plan," Draco said, getting to his feet.

The poor boy was shaking quite noticeably, beaten and battered from his journey and encounter with the dementors. He could barely think, his magic had worn thin and he was already doubting his own plan to beat both Harry and Lester. He couldn't decide which one was the bigger monster. Probably Lester.

He looked at Mythas' expression and changed his mind. Definitely Lester.

"If you don't do as I say, you will lose your precious Harry Potter forever."

Draco thought about a response but decided to walk toward the Apparation area, he was too tired and worn to deal with Lester's insistent demands. On and on and on with that guy.

But just as Draco moved to shove his way past the Auror, a loud crack echoed through the room. Draco whirled around to see the fountain split down the middle. The wizards crushing the Muggles under their feet suddenly fell down to the ground, water spewing in different directions. And rising from the dusty remains was none other than Harry Potter.

He wore billowing black robes, a hopeless and dark feeling emanating from his presence. His wand was brandished for all to see, eyes glowing sickly green. "You tricked me," Harry roared.

His finger pointed right to Draco who wanted to cower behind Lester but stood his ground. He wouldn't look weak. Men can't look weak. So Draco held his stance, fingers touching his new wand, ready for any moment.

"You led me to think you were a ghost," Harry stepped on the sculpted face of a Muggle, walking toward Draco. "But you're not a ghost, are you?"

Draco swallowed hard. He didn't have a good excuse for this. Mythas chuckled, "This was your grand plan? Let Potter think you're a ghost then run away like a child. Ha!"

"I'm not running away!" Draco whined, fingers clenching around his wand. "I'm not going to leave you, Harry."

Harry didn't seem to care about that statement, marching ever closer to the two wizards, hissing like a snake. Harry, or whatever was left of him, didn't hesitate to draw his wand and aim it at Draco. "You want to be a ghost? I'll make you a ghost."

Draco tried to think of words to say, anything to make Harry realize that he was on his side. That he wanted to help Harry come back to who he was. The stupid Gryffindor that made him wear the weasel sweaters and couldn't clean an flat to save his life. That was the Harry he wanted — the Harry he needed.

The plan could still work, he just needed Harry to let him in, come close enough for Draco to kiss him. The magical potion was still on his lips.

Harry distracted Draco from his thoughts, pulling him back into the cold and desolate reality. His heart pounded in his ears and he looked at the stormy and cold Harry Potter. "You broke my heart," Harry said mercilessly, "and for that you must pay."

Harry raises his wand. "AVADA KE-"

Draco lunged forward, heart in his head and head completely shut down. He flicked his wand, "STUPEFY!"

Harry was sent to the ground and Draco leapt on top of him, grabbing both his hands and holding them tightly over Harry's head. "I love you, you stupid git!" He exclaimed before pressing his lips to Harry's.

Harry stared up at Draco for a moment, the neon glow slowly fading from his eyes. He convulsed on the floor, crying out in pain. Draco's heart began to sink, tears pricked at his eyes but he wiped them away. He turned away from Harry who began to scream. He couldn't watch him like this.

That's when a dark cloud poured out of Harry's mouth, formed like a black snake with smokey eyes. Draco looked on in shock as the black smoke began to fill the room. He choked and coughed on the smoke, eyes watering. He ran to Harry once more, falling over top of his limp body. "What have I done?" he cried.

Harry lay on the ground, green eyes wide open and back to normal. Draco hugged him, crying openly. He couldn't care anymore about his tears. He needed Harry back, he needed his stupid prat with that goofy smile and way too happy disposition.

"Aww, poor Draco. Your plan didn't work?" A cold voice came from behind them, sending chills up Draco's spine.

Draco slowly turned around, gasping in horror at what he saw.

Mythas Lester stood tall, eyes glowing, the black smoke swirling around him and slowly disappearing into him. He grinned a sick and evil grin. "I should thank you," he drawled, fiddling with his wand, "I've been thinking about this all wrong. I don't need either of you. All I had to do was take the power for myself. I don't need people to like me and call me a hero," He laughed humorlessly. "I just need people to think I'm a big enough monster that they'll do exactly as I say."
