Lesson #1- The Basics
There are some oft-overlooked aspects to sharing a work of real person fanfiction that have come to my attention. Please note that the following are really quite essential to enticing readers:
1. Have a title that is free of basic grammatical errors
(a) I also suggest not clarifying the nature of your story in the title (e.g., 'A Demon's Bargain [reader x Andy Biersack w/smut], 'Andy Biersack smutty Oneshots'). It detracts from the status of your work as a legitimate creative endeavor. Save clarification for the description ('blurb') and key search words ('tags').
(b) i personally don't care for titles that are identical to the titles of songs, but that's a matter of preference. -a
2. Actually write a description. If your story's title or blurb says, 'see intro,' 'see summary,' or even worse, 'see summery,' I will never, ever read it.
(a) If your story is a sequel, prequel, or otherwise part of a series, it may be wisest to mention that early in the description/blurb.
(b) Definitely don't write anything along the lines of 'this sucks i dont kno,' or 'plz read blah blah bla.' If your blurb is utter crap, it is inferred that your story is too.
3. Desirable, but not essential, is to include a picture as your story's cover. It shows you cared enough to take the time.
(a) Though Wattpad covers are very small, if they are terrible or if there isn't one, then it lowers my initial guess as to how good the story could be, if the author didn't bother to even make a decent cover.
(b) Ideally, have the title and the author's pen name, legibly, on the cover as well.
4. Keep any introductory chapter short, and don't have more than one.
(a) Prequels, which are part of the story as well, are fine to be several chapters long.
(b) Many people don't care to page through multiple chapters listing awards, a description, book trailers, and full of multiple supplemental materials before getting to start the story. It's preferential to have an Appendix at the end instead. Because you can edit chapters, your book does not have to be finished to have an Appendix.
-I (SP) have a book that has won a fair amount of Wattpad user-run awards. It would have been wiser for me to place my awards list in an Appendix, rather than in the Intro.
Notes
Add away, arch-nemesis!
i'll edit as i get around to it and stuff comes to me. -a
